1-3장이 호세아의 삶을 통해 비유적으로 북이스라엘의 영적 상태를 폭로했다면, 4장부터는 구체적인 언어로 이스라엘의 실상을 고발합니다.

[ 호세아 4:1 - 4:19 ] (찬송426장)

1이스라엘 자손들아 여호와의 말씀을 들으라 여호와께서 이 땅 주민과 논쟁하시나니 이 땅에는 진실도 없고 인애도 없고 하나님을 아는 지식도 없고 2오직 저주와 속임과 살인과 도둑질과 간음뿐이요 포악하여 피가 피를 뒤이음이라 3그러므로 이 땅이 슬퍼하며 거기 사는 자와 들짐승과 공중에 나는 새가 다 쇠잔할 것이요 바다의 고기도 없어지리라

 4그러나 어떤 사람이든지 다투지도 말며 책망하지도 말라 네 백성들이 제사장과 다투는 자처럼 되었음이니라 5너는 낮에 넘어지겠고 너와 함께 있는 선지자는 밤에 넘어지리라 내가 네 어머니를 멸하리라 6내 백성이 지식이 없으므로 망하는도다 네가 지식을 버렸으니 나도 너를 버려 내 제사장이 되지 못하게 할 것이요 네가 네 하나님의 율법을 잊었으니 나도 네 자녀들을 잊어버리리라 7그들은 번성할수록 내게 범죄하니 내가 그들의 영화를 변하여 욕이 되게 하리라 8그들이 내 백성의 속죄제물을 먹고 그 마음을 그들의 죄악에 두는도다 9장차는 백성이나 제사장이나 동일함이라 내가 그들의 행실대로 벌하며 그들의 행위대로 갚으리라 10그들이 먹어도 배부르지 아니하며 음행하여도 수효가 늘지 못하니 이는 여호와를 버리고 따르지 아니하였음이니라

 11음행과 묵은 포도주와 새 포도주가 마음을 빼앗느니라 12내 백성이 나무에게 묻고 그 막대기는 그들에게 고하나니 이는 그들이 음란한 마음에 미혹되어 하나님을 버리고 음행하였음이니라 13그들이 산 꼭대기에서 제사를 드리며 작은 산 위에서 분향하되 참나무와 버드나무와 상수리나무 아래에서 하니 이는 그 나무 그늘이 좋음이라 이러므로 너희 딸들은 음행하며 너희 며느리들은 간음을 행하는도다 14너희 딸들이 음행하며 너희 며느리들이 간음하여도 내가 벌하지 아니하리니 이는 남자들도 창기와 함께 나가며 음부와 함께 희생을 드림이니라 깨닫지 못하는 백성은 망하리라

 15이스라엘아 너는 음행하여도 유다는 죄를 범하지 못하게 할 것이라 너희는 길갈로 가지 말며 벧아웬으로 올라가지 말며 여호와의 사심을 두고 맹세하지 말지어다 16이스라엘은 완강한 암소처럼 완강하니 이제 여호와께서 어린 양을 넓은 들에서 먹임 같이 그들을 먹이시겠느냐 17에브라임이 우상과 연합하였으니 버려 두라 18그들이 마시기를 다 하고는 이어서 음행하였으며 그들은 부끄러운 일을 좋아하느니라 19바람이 그 날개로 그를 쌌나니 그들이 그 제물로 말미암아 부끄러운 일을 당하리라

하나님은 어떤 분입니까?

내게주시는교훈은무엇입니까?

1-3절   ‘진실’과 ‘인애’는 백성이 닮아야 할 하나님의 성품이자, 언약 관계의 핵심입니다. 서로 진실하지 못하고 서로 불쌍히 여기지 못하는 백성 사이에서는 거짓과 속임과 살인과 도둑질과 간음과 폭력이 난무하고 맙니다. 결국 사람이 진실과 인애를 저버리면, 땅과 생태계 전체가 고통을 당합니다. 이렇듯 하나님과 사람, 사람과 사람, 사람과 땅은 언약적으로 연결되어 있습니다. 우리가 하나님의 언약에 충실할 때, 그래서 진실과 인애로 이 땅을 채울 때, 모든 것이 회복되어 갈 것입니다.

4-10절   하나님을 아는 지식이 없는 이스라엘에 도리어 예배가 융성하고 제사장의 수가 늘어납니다. 하나님의 성품을 닮아가는 삶을 겉만 번지르르한 종교의식으로 대체했기 때문입니다. 종교가 번성하는데, 범죄율은 증가합니다. 백성이 죄를 마음껏 짓고 속죄제물을 열심히 바치다 보니 제사장의 수입도 늘어납니다. 급기야 제사장들은 백성이 죄를 더 지어주길 바라는 마음까지 품습니다. 하지만 하나님은 제사장이든 백성이든 그들의 껍데기 예배에 속지 않으시고 오직 그들의 ‘행실대로’, ‘행위대로’ 갚으실 것입니다. 불의하고 부정한 삶을 화려하고 감동적인 예배로 대체하려 할 때, 우리의 예배도 ‘종교산업’의 일부로 전락할 수 있습니다.

11-15절   이스라엘 백성이 바라는 것은 욕망을 채워주는 하나님입니다. 하나님이 기뻐하시는 진실과 사랑은 도리어 손해 보는 삶일 테니, 그들은 하나님을 버리고 아세라 목상에게 조아리며 뜻을 점지받습니다. 용하다는 산꼭대기 산당들을 찾아다니며 정성껏 제사하고, 가나안에서 유행하는 음란한 풍요제의에까지 참여합니다. 그들은 벧아웬(‘비참의 집’, 타락한 ‘벧엘’의 멸칭)과 길갈을 성지로 삼아 순례하고 하나님과 거래하듯 맹세하며, 우상숭배의 방식으로 하나님을 섬기려 합니다. 하나님은 그들을 죄에 빠진 채로 내버려두는 가장 무서운 심판을 행하실 것입니다. 하나님을 떠나 풍요를 좇아 살면서도 별일 없이 사는 것은 결코 복이 아닙니다.

[ Hosea 4:1 - 4:19 ]

1Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel, for the LORD has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land. There is no faithfulness or steadfast love, and no knowledge of God in the land;2 there is swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.3 Therefore the land mourns, and all who dwell in it languish, and also the beasts of the field and the birds of the heavens, and even the fish of the sea are taken away.4 Yet let no one contend, and let none accuse, for with you is my contention, O priest.5 You shall stumble by day; the prophet also shall stumble with you by night; and I will destroy your mother.6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.7 The more they increased, the more they sinned against me; I will change their glory into shame.8 They feed on the sin of my people; they are greedy for their iniquity.9 And it shall be like people, like priest; I will punish them for their ways and repay them for their deeds.10 They shall eat, but not be satisfied; they shall play the whore, but not multiply, because they have forsaken the LORD to cherish11 whoredom, wine, and new wine, which take away the understanding.12 My people inquire of a piece of wood, and their walking staff gives them oracles. For a spirit of whoredom has led them astray, and they have left their God to play the whore.13 They sacrifice on the tops of the mountains and burn offerings on the hills, under oak, poplar, and terebinth, because their shade is good. Therefore your daughters play the whore, and your brides commit adultery.14 I will not punish your daughters when they play the whore, nor your brides when they commit adultery; for the men themselves go aside with prostitutes and  sacrifice with cult prostitutes, and a people without understanding shall come to ruin.15 Though you play the whore, O Israel, let not Judah become guilty. Enter not into Gilgal, nor go up to Beth-aven, and swear not, “As the LORD lives.”16 Like a stubborn heifer, Israel is stubborn; can the LORD now feed them like a lamb in a broad pasture?17 Ephraim is joined to idols; leave him alone.18 When their drink is gone, they give themselves to whoring; their rulers dearly love shame.19 A wind has wrapped them in its wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.  

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Hosea, who had been delivering God’s message through the imagery of his marriage, now began to proclaim God’s message with his words. Israel had become a land devoid of truth, love, and knowledge. Instead, it was full of swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and adultery. God blamed the priests first and foremost for this. The priests, who were supposed to lead the people in the path of righteousness, were instead blinded by wealth and power and were encouraging others to sin. The people had abandoned God’s teachings and indulged in the pleasures of idolatry. As they soon found out, there was only one consequence for idolatry: God’s judgment (vv. 1-19).

몸으로 메시지를 전하던 호세아가 이제 입술로 선포하기 시작합니다. 이스라엘은 진실, 사랑, 지식은 없고, 저주, 시기, 살인, 도둑질, 간음만 가득한 땅이 되었습니다. 하나님은 그 책임을 가장 먼저 “제사장”에게 물으십니다. 백성을 의의 길로 인도해야 할 제사장이 도리어 부와 권력에 눈멀어 죄를 조장합니다. 백성들도 하나님의 가르침을 버리고 우상숭배의 즐거움에 빠졌습니다. 이러한 우상숭배의 대가는 하나님의 심판밖에 없습니다(1-19절).

Who is God?

Vv. 1-6 God is the one who rebukes us when we move away from Him. However, God’s rebuke does not stop with anger. We may think we have left God, but He has never abandoned us. He rebukes and punishes as a form of discipline that will bring us back to Him. Do I hold on to the truth, love, and knowledge of God that He desires for me to have?

우리가 하나님을 떠나는 삶을 살 때 책망하시는 분입니다. 그러나 하나님의 책망은 우리를 향한 분노에 그치지 않습니다. 우리는 하나님을 떠났다고 생각할지 모르지만, 하나님은 우리를 버린 적이 없으시기에 꾸짖고 벌하면서까지 돌이키기 원하십니다. 나에게는 하나님이 찾으시는 진실과 사랑, 하나님을 아는 지식이 있습니까?

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 9-10 Do not envy those who seemingly live well without God, for they will not be able to satisfy the hunger of their souls, no matter how many expensive things they splurge on. They will live with empty hearts even though they have many material things. True contentment can only be found in abiding with God.

하나님 없이도 잘 사는 사람들을 부러워하지 마십시오. 그들은 비싼 음식을 아무리 많이 먹어도 영혼의 허기를 채울 수 없을 것이고, 많은 것을 가지고 누려도 텅 빈 가슴으로 살게 될 것입니다. 오직 하나님이 함께하셔야만 참 만족이 있습니다.
