예루살렘은 영광스런 과거가 사라지고 최소한의 인간미조차 남지 않은 비참한 몰골이 되었습니다. 차라리 소돔의 갑작스런 멸망이 더 나을 만큼 비참합니다.

[ 예레미야 애가 4:1 - 4:10 ] (찬송420장)

1슬프다 어찌 그리 금이 빛을 잃고 순금이 변질하였으며 성소의 돌들이 거리 어귀마다 쏟아졌는고 2순금에 비할 만큼 보배로운 시온의 아들들이 어찌 그리 토기장이가 만든 질항아리 같이 여김이 되었는고

 3들개들도 젖을 주어 그들의 새끼를 먹이나 딸 내 백성은 잔인하여 마치 광야의 타조 같도다 4젖먹이가 목말라서 혀가 입천장에 붙음이여 어린 아이들이 떡을 구하나 떼어 줄 사람이 없도다 5맛있는 음식을 먹던 자들이 외롭게 거리 거리에 있으며 이전에는 붉은 옷을 입고 자라난 자들이 이제는 거름더미를 안았도다

 6전에 소돔이 사람의 손을 대지 아니하였는데도 순식간에 무너지더니 이제는 딸 내 백성의 죄가 소돔의 죄악보다 무겁도다

 7전에는 존귀한 자들의 몸이 눈보다 깨끗하고 젖보다 희며 산호들보다 붉어 그들의 윤택함이 갈아서 빛낸 청옥 같더니 8이제는 그들의 얼굴이 숯보다 검고 그들의 가죽이 뼈들에 붙어 막대기 같이 말랐으니 어느 거리에서든지 알아볼 사람이 없도다

 9칼에 죽은 자들이 주려 죽은 자들보다 나음은 토지 소산이 끊어지므로 그들은 찔림 받은 자들처럼 점점 쇠약하여 감이로다 10딸 내 백성이 멸망할 때에 자비로운 부녀들이 자기들의 손으로 자기들의 자녀들을 삶아 먹었도다

1How the gold has grown dim, how the pure gold is changed! The holy stones lie scattered at the head of every street.2 The precious sons of Zion, worth their weight in fine gold, how they are regarded as earthen pots, the work of a potter's hands!3 Even jackals offer the breast; they nurse their young; but the daughter of my people has become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.4 The tongue of the nursing infant sticks to the roof of its mouth for thirst; the children beg for food, but no one gives to them.5 Those who once feasted on delicacies perish in the streets; those who were brought up in purple embrace ash heaps.6 For the chastisement of the daughter of my people has been greater than the punishment of Sodom, which was overthrown in a moment, and no hands were wrung for her.7 Her princes were purer than snow, whiter than milk; their bodies  were more ruddy than coral, the beauty of their form was like sapphire.8 Now their face is blacker than soot; they are not recognized in the streets; their skin has shriveled on their bones; it has become as dry as wood.9 Happier were the victims of the sword than the victims of hunger, who wasted away, pierced by lack of the fruits of the field.10 The hands of compassionate women have boiled their own children; they became their food during the destruction of the daughter of my people. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

The glory of Jerusalem, once more precious than gold, was now like shabby, earthen pots on the verge of breaking. The inhabitants of the destroyed city were miserable. The nobles and leaders were black-faced and thin from suffering. The surviving inhabitants of Jerusalem were dying of starvation to the point that they would rather have died by the sword when Jerusalem had fallen. Jerusalem was far worse off than Sodom, a city that was quickly destroyed by God’s judgment (vv. 1-10).

금보다 귀했던 예루살렘의 영광이, 이젠 깨져버리기 직전의 초라한 질그릇 같이 되어버렸습니다. 멸망한 예루살렘 거민들의 생활상은 비참합니다. 귀족들과 지도자들은 검은 얼굴을 하고 삐쩍 말라 있습니다. 예루살렘이 함락될 때 칼에 맞아 죽는 게 나았다고 생각될 정도로, 살아남아 있는 예루살렘 백성들은 굶주림 속에서 죽어가고 있습니다. 하나님의 심판으로 단숨에 멸망했던 도시 소돔보다 훨씬 더 심각하게 죄악에 찌들어 있었기 때문입니다(1-10절).

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 1-2 A church that boasts about its lavish buildings and number of members will surely fall apart when the Lord leaves it. Even if you have nothing, a community where the Lord dwells and sustains will stand strong. What vision does our church have and what are the goals we are working toward?

화려한 건물과 많은 성도를 자랑할지라도, 주님이 떠난 교회는 반드시 무너집니다. 그러나 우리 공동체는 어떤 비전을 가지고, 어떤 목표를 향해 달려갑니까?

V. 6 Jerusalem, the city who claimed to know God, committed sins worse than those of the city of Sodom. The countless acts of hatred, exclusion, and violence committed in the name of Christ shows how this has been true over the course of history. Before we condemn the world, let us first remove the plank in our own eyes (Matt. 7:3).

예루살렘의 죄가 소돔의 죄보다 심각했습니다. 하나님을 안다고 하는 백성들이 소돔보다도 더한 죄를 저지를 수 있습니다. 기독교의 이름으로 자행된 숱한 혐오와 배제와 폭력의 역사가 이를 증명합니다. 세상을 정죄하기 전에, 먼저 우리 안에 있는 악한 모습부터 제거해나갑시다.
