바울은 믿음의 아들인 디모데에게 에베소 교회에 들어온 ‘다른 교훈’의 확산을 막으라고 명하며, 다른 교훈의 문제점과 바른 교훈의 본질을 설명합니다.

1우리 구주 하나님과 우리의 소망이신 그리스도 예수의 명령을 따라 그리스도 예수의 사도 된 바울은 2믿음 안에서 참 아들 된 디모데에게 편지하노니 하나님 아버지와 그리스도 예수 우리 주께로부터 은혜와 긍휼과 평강이 네게 있을지어다

 3내가 마게도냐로 갈 때에 너를 권하여 에베소에 머물라 한 것은 어떤 사람들을 명하여 다른 교훈을 가르치지 말며 4신화와 끝없는 족보에 몰두하지 말게 하려 함이라 이런 것은 믿음 안에 있는 하나님의 경륜을 이룸보다 도리어 변론을 내는 것이라 5이 교훈의 목적은 청결한 마음과 선한 양심과 거짓이 없는 믿음에서 나오는 사랑이거늘 6사람들이 이에서 벗어나 헛된 말에 빠져 7율법의 선생이 되려 하나 자기가 말하는 것이나 자기가 확증하는 것도 깨닫지 못하는도다

 8그러나 율법은 사람이 그것을 적법하게만 쓰면 선한 것임을 우리는 아노라 9알 것은 이것이니 율법은 옳은 사람을 위하여 세운 것이 아니요 오직 불법한 자와 복종하지 아니하는 자와 경건하지 아니한 자와 죄인과 거룩하지 아니한 자와 망령된 자와 아버지를 죽이는 자와 어머니를 죽이는 자와 살인하는 자며 10음행하는 자와 남색하는 자와 인신 매매를 하는 자와 거짓말하는 자와 거짓맹세하는 자와 기타 바른 교훈을 거스르는 자를 위함이니 11이 교훈은 내게 맡기신 바 복되신 하나님의 영광의 복음을 따름이니라

[ 1 Timothy 1:1 - 1:11 ]

1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.3 As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine,4 nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith.5 The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.6 Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion,7 desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.8 Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully,9 understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers,10 the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine,11 in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted. 

Thinking & Understanding

When Paul left for Macedonia, he left Timothy behind in Ephesus. Timothy’s job was to prevent false teachings about the gospel from seeping into the church. False teachers had already infiltrated the church in Ephesus, claiming to be teachers of the law yet turning to meaningless talk (vv. 1-7). The purpose of the law was to point out sin and reform lives, but the false teachers were turning it into meaningless talk that had nothing to do with a godly life (vv. 8-11).

바울은 아시아를 떠나 마케도니아로 갈 때, 디모데를 에베소에 남겨두었습니다. 디모데의 임무는 복음에서 벗어난 다른 가르침이 교회에 침투하지 못하게 막는 것입니다. 에베소 교회에 침투한 거짓 교사들이 율법을 가르친다면서 쓸데없는 토론만 조장하고 있습니다(1-7절). 율법의 목적은 죄를 지적하고 삶을 교정하는 것입니다. 하지만 거짓 교사들은 율법을 삶과 상관없는 무의미한 토론거리로 전락시키고 있습니다(8-11절).

Vv. 3-7 The purpose of God’s teachings are to change the way we live—to accurately communicate the heart of the gospel so that His love will grow in our hearts and blossom in the field of life through faith. Are you turning the gospel into dry, theoretical concepts, finding ways to make excuses and arguments out of it?

가르침의 목적은 삶의 방식의 변화입니다. 하나님의 사랑이 우리의 마음에서 자라나 믿음을 통해 삶의 현장에서 만개하도록 복음의 핵심을 정확하게 전달하는 것입니다. 복음을 잡다한 개념과 이론으로 바꾸고 그 안에서 변론과 논쟁을 일삼고 있지 않습니까?

Vv. 8-11 When the law is used to expose and bring the sin of the lawless under control, the law is a good instrument that conforms to the “gospel concerning the glory” of God. The problem is not the law, but those who teach the law in a twisted manner. Let us be on guard against false teachers who misuse and abuse what is good, namely, the gospel and the law.

불법하는 자들의 죄를 드러내고 제어하기 위해 사용되는 율법은 ‘영광의 복음’을 위한 선한 도구가 됩니다. 문제는 율법이 아니라 율법을 그릇되게 가르치는 자들입니다. 선한 것(복음, 율법)을 오용하고 악용하는 거짓 교사들을 경계합시다.

Lord, help us to defeat the false doctrines that bring confusion and disunity in the church. Help us to uphold sound doctrines.
