하나님의 은혜에서 비롯된 ‘바른 교훈’의 목적(사랑, 믿음, 착한 양심)을 소개한 바울은 이제 구체적인 실천사항을 제시합니다. 그 첫째는 ‘모든 사람의 구원을 위한 기도’입니다.

1그러므로 내가 첫째로 권하노니 모든 사람을 위하여 간구와 기도와 도고와 감사를 하되 2임금들과 높은 지위에 있는 모든 사람을 위하여 하라 이는 우리가 모든 경건과 단정함으로 고요하고 평안한 생활을 하려 함이라

1First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people,2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.7 For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. 

Thinking & Understanding

Paul encouraged Timothy to pray for “all people”—those who were like him and did not know the gospel or and those who persecuted believers (1:13). Paul specifically commanded him to pray for people in high positions because God wanted all people to be saved. It may be challenging to pray for the powers in the world that resort to violence, but the best thing to do is to pray for them. As there is only one true Saviour and Ruler who saved us, we are called to pray for the rulers of the world—not pray to them (vv. 1-7).

바울은 과거의 자신(1:13)처럼 복음을 모르거나 핍박하는 ‘모든 사람’을 위해 기도하라고 권면합니다. 모든 사람이 구원에 이르기를 하나님이 원하시기 때문입니다. 바울은 특별히 통치자들을 위해 기도하라고 명령합니다. 폭력을 일삼는 세상 권력을 위해 기도하는 것이 마음을 불편하게 할 수 있습니다. 하지만 가장 좋은 길은 ‘그들을 위해’ 기도하는 것입니다. 그러나 우리를 구원하신 구주는 한 분 하나님뿐이시니, 황제를 위해 기도할지언정 ‘황제에게’ 기도하지는 말아야 합니다(1-7절).

Who is Jesus?

Vv. 5-6 Jesus gave Himself as a ransom for all people. There is only one way to salvation—through Him and Him alone. He never discriminates who is worthy of salvation. It is only when people try to create other ways of salvation and do not respond in faith to His grace that they bring destruction upon themselves. 

모든 사람을 위해 자신을 대속물로 내어주셨습니다. 구원에 이르는 길은 오직 하나뿐이며, 예수님 외에 다른 길은 없습니다. 하나님은 처음부터 아무도 차별하지 않으셨습니다. 사람들이 대속의 은혜에 믿음으로 반응하지 않고 다른 구원의 길을 만들어 멸망을 자초할 뿐입니다.

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 1-3 Believers should pray for all people, even those in power who persecute the church. The purpose of prayer is for God’s will to be done on earth. Are you praying for unbelieving souls with the heart of God, who wants to see each person saved?

그리스도인은 모든 사람을 위하여 기도해야 합니다. 교회를 박해하는 권력자들도 예외는 아닙니다. 기도의 목적은 하나님의 뜻을 이 땅에 실현하는 것입니다. 한 사람이라도 더 구원받기를 원하시는 하나님의 마음으로 믿지 않는 영혼을 바라보며 기도하고 있습니까?

Lord, help us to be a community of believers that does not overly exalt our leaders but fervently prays for them.
