바울은 다른 교훈을 좇는 사람들의 이단적, 분파적, 탐욕적 특징을 묘사하며 그들을 경계하라고 강조합니다. 특히 돈에 대한 태도가 경건에 미치는 영향을 설명합니다.

3누구든지 다른 교훈을 하며 바른 말 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 말씀과 경건에 관한 교훈을 따르지 아니하면 4그는 교만하여 아무 것도 알지 못하고 변론과 언쟁을 좋아하는 자니 이로써 투기와 분쟁과 비방과 악한 생각이 나며 5마음이 부패하여지고 진리를 잃어 버려 경건을 이익의 방도로 생각하는 자들의 다툼이 일어나느니라

 6그러나 자족하는 마음이 있으면 경건은 큰 이익이 되느니라 7우리가 세상에 아무 것도 가지고 온 것이 없으매 또한 아무 것도 가지고 가지 못하리니 8우리가 먹을 것과 입을 것이 있은즉 족한 줄로 알 것이니라

 9부하려 하는 자들은 시험과 올무와 여러 가지 어리석고 해로운 욕심에 떨어지나니 곧 사람으로 파멸과 멸망에 빠지게 하는 것이라 10돈을 사랑함이 일만 악의 뿌리가 되나니 이것을 탐내는 자들은 미혹을 받아 믿음에서 떠나 많은 근심으로써 자기를 찔렀도다

3If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness,4 he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions,5 and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.6 But godliness with contentment is great gain,7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. 

Thinking & Understanding

Sound instruction was not received by everyone. Some were sick in the heart and became arrogant, twisting God’s Word into points of contention. Paul accused them of allowing the love of money to take over their hearts. When greed rules the heart, trust in relationships breaks down and what was the object of love turns into an enemy competing for gain, ultimately bearing ruin and destruction. Paul advocated for godliness with content. Money was not to be hated nor idolized. Being content with what they had was the right attitude to hold as a believer (vv. 3-10).

좋은 교훈이 모든 사람에게 받아들여지는 것은 아닙니다. 어떤 이들은 마음이 병들고 교만해져서, 말씀을 논쟁거리로 삼아 다툼을 일삼습니다. 바울은 ‘돈’이 그들의 마음을 점령했다고 고발합니다. 탐욕이 마음을 지배하면, 신뢰 관계는 무너지고 사랑할 대상이 이득을 위해 경쟁하는 적으로 바뀝니다. 그리고 결국 파멸과 멸망의 열매를 맺습니다. 바울은 ‘자족’하라고 말합니다. 돈을 우상화하지 않되, 혐오하지도 말고, 주어진 데 만족하는 것이 청지기로서 그리스도인이 갖출 태도입니다(3-10절).

What lesson is God teaching me?

V. 4 Those who have departed from sound truth and godliness are proud. They glorify their own thoughts and are unable to admit their ignorance and limitations. Because they do not know the truth, they are arrogant. Because they do not practice godly self-denial, they produce envy, strife, slander, and division. Does my knowledge bring about shalom (peace) and unity instead of conflict and division?

바른 진리와 경건에서 떠난 자들의 특징은 ‘교만’입니다. 소신이나 신념으로 미화하면서 무지와 한계를 인정할 줄 모릅니다. 진리를 모르니 오만하고, 자기부정의 경건이 없으니 ‘병적인’ 시기와 분쟁, 비방과 분열이 끊이질 않습니다. 내 지식은 갈등과 분열 대신 샬롬과 하나 됨을 이루고 있습니까?

Vv. 6-8 Those who try to use godliness as a means of gain will not prevail. But if we recognise that life is temporary and we must leave everything behind, and if we believe that true satisfaction is found in the Lord, we will reap the spiritual benefits of godliness. Do you deal with your earthly possessions with the contentment of someone whose hope is in heaven?

경건을 세속적 이익을 위한 도구로 삼는 자들은 아무 이득을 얻지 못합니다. 하지만 ‘잠시’ 왔다가 ‘전부’ 두고 떠나야 할 인생임을 알고, 주 안에 참 만족이 있음을 믿는다면 경건이 주는 영적 유익을 얻을 수 있습니다. 하늘에 소망을 둔 사람처럼 자족하는 마음으로 이 땅의 재물을 대합니까?

Prayer

Lord, help me not to obsess over what material possessions I do not have, but to look to the things of eternal value that I do have.
