아모스는 이스라엘의 불의를 냉엄하게 고발하는가 하면, 이스라엘이 살 수 있는 방법도 확실히 언급합니다. 바로 거짓 신앙을 버리고 진정으로 하나님을 찾는 것입니다. 

[ 아모스 5:1 - 5:17 ] (찬송85장)

1이스라엘 족속아 내가 너희에게 대하여 애가로 지은 이 말을 들으라 2처녀 이스라엘이 엎드러졌음이여 다시 일어나지 못하리로다 자기 땅에 던지움이여 일으킬 자 없으리로다 3주 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시되 이스라엘 중에서 천 명이 행군해 나가던 성읍에는 백 명만 남고 백 명이 행군해 나가던 성읍에는 열 명만 남으리라 하셨느니라

 4여호와께서 이스라엘 족속에게 이와 같이 말씀하시기를 너희는 나를 찾으라 그리하면 살리라 5벧엘을 찾지 말며 길갈로 들어가지 말며 브엘세바로도 나아가지 말라 길갈은 반드시 사로잡히겠고 벧엘은 비참하게 될 것임이라 하셨나니 6너희는 여호와를 찾으라 그리하면 살리라 그렇지 않으면 그가 불 같이 요셉의 집에 임하여 멸하시리니 벧엘에서 그 불들을 끌 자가 없으리라

 7정의를 쓴 쑥으로 바꾸며 공의를 땅에 던지는 자들아 8묘성과 삼성을 만드시며 사망의 그늘을 아침으로 바꾸시고 낮을 어두운 밤으로 바꾸시며 바닷물을 불러 지면에 쏟으시는 이를 찾으라 그의 이름은 여호와시니라 9그가 강한 자에게 갑자기 패망이 이르게 하신즉 그 패망이 산성에 미치느니라 10무리가 성문에서 책망하는 자를 미워하며 정직히 말하는 자를 싫어하는도다 11너희가 힘없는 자를 밟고 그에게서 밀의 부당한 세를 거두었은즉 너희가 비록 다듬은 돌로 집을 건축하였으나 거기 거주하지 못할 것이요 아름다운 포도원을 가꾸었으나 그 포도주를 마시지 못하리라 12너희의 허물이 많고 죄악이 무거움을 내가 아노라 너희는 의인을 학대하며 뇌물을 받고 성문에서 가난한 자를 억울하게 하는 자로다 13그러므로 이런 때에 지혜자가 잠잠하나니 이는 악한 때임이니라

 14너희는 살려면 선을 구하고 악을 구하지 말지어다 만군의 하나님 여호와께서 너희의 말과 같이 너희와 함께 하시리라 15너희는 악을 미워하고 선을 사랑하며 성문에서 정의를 세울지어다 만군의 하나님 여호와께서 혹시 요셉의 남은 자를 불쌍히 여기시리라

 16그러므로 주 만군의 하나님 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시기를 사람이 모든 광장에서 울겠고 모든 거리에서 슬프도다 슬프도다 하겠으며 농부를 불러다가 애곡하게 하며 울음꾼을 불러다가 울게 할 것이며 17모든 포도원에서도 울리니 이는 내가 너희 가운데로 지나갈 것임이라 여호와의 말씀이니라

하나님은 어떤 분입니까?

4-6,14,15절   심판을 선고받은 이들에게 구체적인 살길을 허락하십니다. 이제라도 회개하고 돌이켜 하나님을 찾고 선을 구한다면 이스라엘은 살 수 있습니다. 하지만 북왕국의 제의 중심지인 벧엘, 길갈, 브엘세바를 순례하며, 더 많은 종교 의식으로 위기를 모면하려 하면, 반대의 결과를 맞이할 것입니다. 특별한 장소와 예식에만 몰두하는 것으로는 하나님을 찾을 수 없습니다. 선을 행하고 정의를 세우는 것이 하나님을 찾는 구체적인 방법이면서 진정한 예배의 방식이고 하나님이 주신 생명을 누리는 길입니다. 

7-9절   창조주요 천지만물을 주관하시는 분으로, 정의를 하찮게 여기고 공의를 땅에 던져버리는 악인들을 패망에 이르게 하십니다. 하나님은 강하고 튼튼한 성을 폐허로 만드시며, 뽑히고 파괴된 것을 건설하고 심기도 하시는 분입니다. 가난하고 억눌린 자들은 전능하신 하나님을 바라보며 힘을 얻겠지만, 정의를 쓴 쑥으로 바꾸고 공의를 땅에 팽개친 자들은 하나님 앞에 엎드려야 합니다.

내게주시는교훈은무엇입니까?

1-3,16,17절   심판이 임하면 이스라엘은 회생불능의 상태가 될 것입니다. 전쟁에서도 처절한 패배만 겪을 것입니다. 죄는 아름답지 않을뿐더러 그 결과도 비극입니다. 이스라엘은 죄를 지으면서도 그것이 가져올 파국을 생각하지 못하니 큰일입니다. 죄와 심판에 대해 ‘불감증’에 걸렸다면, 더 늦기 전에 각성하고 그 무서움에 눈 떠야 합니다. 

10-13절   이스라엘이 하나님의 심판을 받을 수밖에 없는 또 다른 이유는 지혜자의 말을 싫어한 것과 가난한 자들을 밟아 부를 축척한 것, 뇌물을 받고 부당한 판결을 내린 것입니다. 소수의 지도자들은 사욕을 위해 불의를 일삼고 다수의 백성은 옳은 말보다 거짓으로 희망을 말하는 것을 좋아하니, 백성에서 지도자에 이르기까지 이스라엘에는 온통 불의입니다. 어쩌면 심판은 그들에게 당연한 결과일지 모릅니다. 선하고 정의로운 하나님을 섬기는 백성의 삶은 선하고 정직한 열매를 맺어야 합니다.

[ Amos 5:1 - 5:17 ]

1Hear this word that I take up over you in lamentation, O house of Israel:2 “Fallen, no more to rise, is the virgin Israel; forsaken on her land, with none to raise her up.”3 For thus says the Lord GOD: “The city that went out a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went out a hundred shall have ten left to the house of Israel.”4 For thus says the LORD to the house of Israel: “Seek me and live;5 but do not seek Bethel, and do not enter into Gilgal or cross over to Beersheba; for Gilgal shall surely go into exile, and Bethel shall come to nothing.”6 Seek the LORD and live, lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and it devour, with none to  quench it for Bethel,7 O you who turn justice to wormwood and cast down righteousness to the earth!8 He who made the Pleiades and Orion, and turns deep darkness into the morning and darkens the day into night, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out on the surface of the earth, the LORD is his name;9 who makes destruction flash forth against the strong, so that destruction comes upon the fortress.10 They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they abhor him who speaks the truth.11 Therefore because you trample on the poor and you exact taxes of grain from him, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.12 For I know how many are your transgressions and how great are your sins— you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and turn aside the needy in the gate.13 Therefore he who is prudent will keep silent in such a time, for it is an evil time.14 Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the LORD, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said.15 Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the LORD, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.16 Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of hosts, the Lord: “In all the squares there shall be wailing, and in all the streets they shall say, ‘Alas! Alas!’ They shall call the farmers to mourning and to wailing those who are skilled in lamentation,17 and in all vineyards there shall be wailing, for I will pass through your midst,” says the LORD.  

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Even though Israel had no chance of survival, God once again called for their repentance. But Israel had been unrighteous in many ways. They had taken property from the poor, taken bribes in court, wronged the poor, and remained silent in the face of social injustice. Still, God called for them to repent because He desired to give them another chance, but they did not listen. Eventually, God’s judgment would come, and their town squares and streets would be filled with funeral processions and wailing (vv. 1-17).

이스라엘이 더 이상 살아날 가망이 없음에도, 하나님은 다시 한 번 회개를 촉구하십니다. 하지만 이스라엘은 삶의 많은 영역에서 정의롭지 못했습니다. 가난한 사람들의 재산을 빼앗고, 재판에서 뇌물을 받았습니다. 돈 없는 사람을 억울하게 만들었고, 사회 부조리에 침묵했습니다. 그럼에도 하나님은 기회를 주시려고 회개를 요청하셨지만, 그들은 체 만 체 했습니다. 결국 하나님의 심판이 임하여 광장과 길거리는 온통 장례 행렬과 통곡으로 가득하게 될 것입니다(1-17절).

Who is God?

Vv. 1-3, 16-17 God causes Israel to sing lamentations. The streets were filled with wailing. God had passed among them as the God of death, not the God of life. Before the inevitable time of judgment comes, we must stop the empty celebrations of the world and return to the God who laments.

이스라엘이 애가를 부르게 하십니다. 거리마다 통곡하는 소리로 가득합니다. 하나님이 그들 가운데 생명의 하나님이 아닌 죽음의 하나님으로 지나가셨기 때문입니다. 피할 수 없는 심판의 때가 이르기 전에 입에 고인 축가를 멈추고, 애가를 부르시는 하나님께로 돌아와야 합니다.

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 4, 8 “Seeking God” is not just a romantic poetic phrase. It is the thoughtful consideration and working out of my faith to bring about blessing and change in a society filled with injustice and inequality.

“하나님을 찾는다”는 것은 낭만적인 시적 표현이 아닙니다. 오늘날에도 만연한 사회의 부정직과 불공평에 대항해, 내 신앙이 어떤 변화와 대안을 제시할 수 있을지 치열하게 고민하고 실천하는 것이 바로 하나님을 찾는 것입니다.

Dear God, help me to open my mouth when I see injustice so that I may stand on the side of justice and righteousness.
