11여호와께서 그의 분을 내시며 그의 맹렬한 진노를 쏟으심이여 시온에 불을 지르사 그 터를 사르셨도다 12대적과 원수가 예루살렘 성문으로 들어갈 줄은 세상의 모든 왕들과 천하 모든 백성이 믿지 못하였었도다

 13그의 선지자들의 죄들과 제사장들의 죄악들 때문이니 그들이 성읍 안에서 의인들의 피를 흘렸도다 14그들이 거리 거리에서 맹인 같이 방황함이여 그들의 옷들이 피에 더러워졌으므로 아무도 만질 수 없도다 15사람들이 그들에게 외쳐 이르기를 저리 가라 부정하다, 저리 가라, 저리 가라, 만지지 말라 하였음이여 그들이 도망하여 방황할 때에 이방인들이 말하기를 그들이 다시는 여기서 살지 못하리라 하였도다 16여호와께서 노하여 그들을 흩으시고 다시는 돌보지 아니하시리니 그들이 제사장들을 높이지 아니하였으며 장로들을 대접하지 아니하였음이로다

 17우리가 헛되이 도움을 바라므로 우리의 눈이 상함이여 우리를 구원하지 못할 나라를 바라보고 바라보았도다

 18그들이 우리의 걸음을 엿보니 우리가 거리마다 다 다닐 수 없음이여 우리의 끝이 가깝고 우리의 날들이 다하였으며 우리의 종말이 이르렀도다 19우리를 뒤쫓는 자들이 하늘의 독수리들보다 빠름이여 산 꼭대기까지도 뒤쫓으며 광야에서도 우리를 잡으려고 매복하였도다

 20우리의 콧김 곧 여호와께서 기름 부으신 자가 그들의 함정에 빠졌음이여 우리가 그를 가리키며 전에 이르기를 우리가 그의 그늘 아래에서 이방인들 중에 살겠다 하던 자로다

 21우스 땅에 사는 딸 에돔아 즐거워하며 기뻐하라 잔이 네게도 이를지니 네가 취하여 벌거벗으리라 22딸 시온아 네 죄악의 형벌이 다하였으니 주께서 다시는 너로 사로잡혀 가지 아니하게 하시리로다 딸 에돔아 주께서 네 죄악을 벌하시며 네 허물을 드러내시리로다

[ Lamentations 4:11 - 4:22 ]

11The LORD gave full vent to his wrath; he poured out his hot anger, and he kindled a fire in Zion that consumed its foundations.12 The kings of the earth did not believe, nor any of the inhabitants of the world, that foe or enemy could enter the gates of Jerusalem.13 This was for the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests, who shed in the midst of her the blood of the righteous.14 They wandered, blind, through the streets; they were so defiled with blood that no one was able to touch their garments.15 “Away! Unclean!” people cried at them. “Away! Away! Do not touch!” So they became fugitives and wanderers; people said among the nations, “They shall stay with us no longer.”16 The LORD himself has scattered them; he will regard them no more; no honor was shown to the priests, no favor to the elders.17 Our eyes failed, ever watching vainly for help; in our watching we watched for a nation which could not save.18 They dogged our steps so that we could not walk in our streets; our end drew near; our days were numbered, for our end had come.19 Our pursuers were swifter than the eagles in the heavens; they chased us on the mountains; they lay in wait for us in the wilderness.20 The breath of our nostrils, the LORD's anointed, was captured in their pits, of whom we said, “Under his shadow we shall live among the nations.”21 Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, you who dwell in the land of Uz; but to you also the cup shall pass; you shall become drunk and strip yourself bare.22 The punishment of your iniquity, O daughter of Zion, is accomplished; he will keep you in exile no longer; but your iniquity, O daughter of Edom, he will punish; he will uncover your sins. 

Thinking & Understanding

When Jerusalem refused to turn from its sins, God destroyed them in His anger. The greatest responsibility for this fell on the leaders. The prophets and priests had practiced unrighteousness and led the way in persecuting the righteous. They looked to Egypt for protection from Babylon, but it was all in vain (Jer. 2:36). As Israel was weakened, Edom, which was able to increase its power and territory, gloated over them. But Jeremiah was confident that Edom would be judged and Israel would be restored (vv. 11-22).

예루살렘이 죄에서 돌이키지 않자 하나님이 진노하셔서 멸망시키십니다. 이 일의 가장 중대한 책임은 지도자들에게 있습니다. 예언자들과 제사장들이 불의를 행하며 의로운 자를 핍박하는 데 앞장섰기 때문입니다. 바빌로니아의 위협을 막으려 이집트를 의지해보지만 허사입니다(렘 2:36). 이스라엘이 약해지자 자기 세력을 키우고 영토를 확장할 수 있게 된 에돔은 즐거워합니다. 그러나 시인은 에돔의 심판과 이스라엘의 회복을 확신합니다(11-22절).

Who is God?

Vv. 14-16 God scattered the leaders of Zion. This was because they, who should have faithfully kept their office, had become unclean through sin. Their own people and surrounding nations were unkind to them and drove them out of the land. When the Lord turns His back on a people, they are no longer welcomed by the world. 

시온의 지도자들을 흩어버리십니다. 거룩한 직무를 감당해야 할 자들이 죄로 부정하게 되었기 때문입니다. 백성들은 그들을 거부했고 이방인들조차 홀대하며 내쫓았습니다. 주님이 등돌리신 공동체는 세상에서도 환영받지 못합니다.

What lesson is God teaching me?

V. 22 There is hope in God alone. All the hope the Israelites had put in kings, leaders, and Egypt had ended in disappointment. But when they looked to God again, they saw hope. If destruction is from God, restoration is also from God. 

하나님께만 희망이 있습니다. 왕을 비롯한 지도자들과 이집트에게 걸었던 모든 희망은 실망이 되었습니다. 그러나 다시 하나님을 찾을 때 희망이 보입니다. 파멸이 하나님으로부터 온 것이라면 회복 역시 하나님으로부터 오기 때문입니다.

Lord, help our leaders to be holy before you and to be recognised as blameless in our society.
