바울은 앞서 “바른 교훈은 복되신 하나님의 영광의 복음을 따른다”라고 한 데 이어 ‘복음의 일꾼’으로 세워진 자신의 이야기를 들려주며 바른 교훈의 토대와 지향점을 가르칩니다.

12나를 능하게 하신 그리스도 예수 우리 주께 내가 감사함은 나를 충성되이 여겨 내게 직분을 맡기심이니 13내가 전에는 비방자요 박해자요 폭행자였으나 도리어 긍휼을 입은 것은 내가 믿지 아니할 때에 알지 못하고 행하였음이라 14우리 주의 은혜가 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 믿음과 사랑과 함께 넘치도록 풍성하였도다 15미쁘다 모든 사람이 받을 만한 이 말이여 그리스도 예수께서 죄인을 구원하시려고 세상에 임하셨다 하였도다 죄인 중에 내가 괴수니라 16그러나 내가 긍휼을 입은 까닭은 예수 그리스도께서 내게 먼저 일체 오래 참으심을 보이사 후에 주를 믿어 영생 얻는 자들에게 본이 되게 하려 하심이라 17영원하신 왕 곧 썩지 아니하고 보이지 아니하고 홀로 하나이신 하나님께 존귀와 영광이 영원무궁하도록 있을지어다 아멘

[ 1 Timothy 1:12 - 1:20 ]

12I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service,13 though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief,14 and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.15 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.17 To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.18 This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare,19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith,20 among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme. 

Thinking & Understanding

Paul used himself to give an example of the power of God’s love. The hand of God’s mercy had transformed Paul from being an enemy of the gospel into a completely different person. Paul realized that the Messiah’s call was not to judge sinners but to save them, of which he considered himself the worst. Jesus Christ had entrusted him, the foremost of sinners, with the office of apostleship (vv. 12-17). In view of all this, Paul commanded Timothy to fight the good fight and to be armed with faith and a good conscience (vv. 18-19).

바울은 하나님 사랑의 능력을 증명하려고 자신을 본보기로 제시합니다. 하나님의 자비의 손길이 복음의 원수였고 박해의 앞잡이였던 바울을 완전히 딴사람으로 만들었습니다. 바울은 메시아의 소명이 죄인을 심판하는 것이 아니라 구원하는 것임을 깨달았고, 그 본보기가 자신임을 알았습니다. 죄인의 우두머리였던 자신에게 사도의 직분을 맡기신 예수 그리스도의 무한한 신뢰를 경험했습니다(12-17절). 바울은 디모데에게 믿음과 선한 양심으로 무장하고 선한 싸움을 싸우라고 명령합니다(18-19절).

Who is God?

Vv. 12-17 God turns His fiercest opponents into His most devoted followers. Without hesitation, Paul confessed that he was “the foremost” of sinners. This was a testimony that only a person who received grace could give—a testimony that only someone who knew the gospel could give. Remember that we, too, are recipients of that love. Let us thank God that He calls even sinners like us to be made righteous in Christ (Rom. 3:22).

가장 포악했던 반대자를 가장 헌신적인 추종자로 바꾸십니다. 바울은 주저 없이 자신을 ‘죄인 중에 괴수’라고 고백합니다. 은혜 받은 사람만이 가질 수 있는 자세요, 복음을 아는 사람만이 할 수 있는 증언입니다. 나도 그 사랑의 수혜자입니다. 나 같은 죄인도 불러 하나님의 의(롬3:22)에 이르게 하심에 감사합시다.

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 18-20 A conscience that disregards faith has no power of salvation, and faith that abandons conscience shipwrecks in the journey of salvation. Let us take heed from the negative examples of spiritual leaders who ignored the voice of their conscience and fell into corruption. We must first fight our inner selves rather than the visible targets in front of us.

믿음을 무시한 양심은 구원의 능력이 없고, 양심을 저버린 믿음은 구원의 항해에서 파선합니다. 양심의 소리를 외면하다 타락해버린 영적 지도자들의 예를 반면교사로 삼읍시다. 눈앞의 대상보다 자신의 속사람과 먼저 싸워야 합니다.

Lord, help us to keep our faith and conscience as we fight the good fight, remembering the mercies we receive from you every day.
