40우리가 스스로 우리의 행위들을 조사하고 여호와께로 돌아가자 41우리의 마음과 손을 아울러 하늘에 계신 하나님께 들자 42우리의 범죄함과 우리의 반역함을 주께서 사하지 아니하시고 43진노로 자신을 가리시고 우리를 추격하시며 죽이시고 긍휼을 베풀지 아니하셨나이다 44주께서 구름으로 자신을 가리사 기도가 상달되지 못하게 하시고 45우리를 뭇 나라 가운데에서 쓰레기와 폐물로 삼으셨으므로 46우리의 모든 원수들이 우리를 향하여 그들의 입을 크게 벌렸나이다 47두려움과 함정과 파멸과 멸망이 우리에게 임하였도다

 48딸 내 백성의 파멸로 말미암아 내 눈에는 눈물이 시내처럼 흐르도다 49내 눈에 흐르는 눈물이 그치지 아니하고 쉬지 아니함이여 50여호와께서 하늘에서 살피시고 돌아보실 때까지니라 51나의 성읍의 모든 여자들을 내 눈으로 보니 내 심령이 상하는도다

 52나의 원수들이 이유없이 나를 새처럼 사냥하는도다 53그들이 내 생명을 끊으려고 나를 구덩이에 넣고 그 위에 돌을 던짐이여 54물이 내 머리 위로 넘치니 내가 스스로 이르기를 이제는 멸절되었다 하도다

40Let us test and examine our ways, and return to the LORD!41 Let us lift up our hearts and hands to God in heaven:42 “We have transgressed and rebelled, and you have not forgiven.43 “You have wrapped yourself with anger and pursued us, killing without pity;44 you have wrapped yourself with a cloud  so that no prayer can pass through.45 You have made us scum and garbage among the peoples.46 “All our enemies open their mouths against us;47 panic and pitfall have come upon us, devastation and destruction;48 my eyes flow with rivers of tears because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.49 “My eyes will flow without ceasing, without respite,50 until the LORD from heaven looks down and sees;51 my eyes cause me grief at the fate of all the daughters of my city.52 “I have been hunted like a bird by those who were my enemies without cause;53 they flung me alive into the pit and cast stones on me;54 water closed over my head; I said, ‘I am lost.’ 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Israel was a strong nation that crossed the Red Sea and destroyed the city of Jericho when they walked with God. Now that they had left God, they were like scum and garbage, scorned among nations. The way out of this painful situation was to repent of their sins and return to the Lord (vv. 40-47). Jeremiah expressed his sorrow in tears, but he did not give up and waited for God’s help, knowing that He cared about His people (vv. 48-54).

이스라엘이 하나님과 함께했을 때, 그들은 홍해 바다를 건너고 여리고성을 무너뜨렸던 강한 나라였습니다. 하지만 하나님을 떠난 지금은 다른 나라들 사이에서 무시받는 쓰레기와 오물 같은 나라가 되었습니다. 이 고통스러운 상황에서 벗어나는 방법은 자신의 죄를 돌아보고 여호와께 돌아가는 것입니다(40-47절). 예레미야는 눈물로 슬픔을 토로합니다. 그리고 포기하지 않고 자기 백성을 돌아보시는 하나님의 도우심을 기다립니다(48-54절).

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 40-42 True repentance is a turning of the heart. Returning to the LORD is not just a blanket statement of repentance, but a concrete plan and action to dramatically change one’s entire life to align with God’s Word. Examine your behaviour, acknowledge your sin, and offer a heartfelt prayer of sorrow and repentance before God.

참된 회개는 마음을 돌이키는 것입니다. 여호와께 돌아간다는 것은 두루뭉술한 회개의 말이 아니라, 내 삶 전체를 하나님의 말씀에 맞추어 획기적으로 변화시키는 구체적인 계획과 행동입니다. 나의 행위를 낱낱이 살피고, 죄를 인정하고 슬퍼하는 진솔한 마음의 기도를 올려드립시다.

Vv. 49-51 Uncontrollable tears streamed from Jeremiah’s eyes. They were not only tears of despair and defeat, but tears of confidence that God would one day bring restoration. What are some things you can pray for over your church and nation like Jeremiah did?

예레미야의 눈에서는 눈물이 걷잡을 수 없이 흘러내립니다. 절망과 패배감의 눈물이 아니라, 하나님께서 언젠가 회복시키실 것이라는 확신 가운데 흘리는 눈물입니다. 예레미야처럼, 교회와 나라를 위해 눈물로 기도해야 할 일은 무엇입니까?

Lord, as we mourn the sins of our nations and communities, let our prayers of hopeful tears never cease.
