에베소 교회에는 일부 남녀가 ‘다른 교훈’을 가르치는 거짓 교사들의 영향을 받아 부적절하게 행동하고 있었습니다. 바울은 그들이 힘쓰고 추구해야 할 바른 가치를 교훈합니다. 

[ 디모데전서 2:8 - 2:15 ] (찬송420장)

8그러므로 각처에서 남자들이 분노와 다툼이 없이 거룩한 손을 들어 기도하기를 원하노라

 9또 이와 같이 여자들도 단정하게 옷을 입으며 소박함과 정절로써 자기를 단장하고 땋은 머리와 금이나 진주나 값진 옷으로 하지 말고 10오직 선행으로 하기를 원하노라 이것이 하나님을 경외한다 하는 자들에게 마땅한 것이니라

 11여자는 일체 순종함으로 조용히 배우라 12여자가 가르치는 것과 남자를 주관하는 것을 허락하지 아니하노니 오직 조용할지니라 13이는 아담이 먼저 지음을 받고 하와가 그 후며 14아담이 속은 것이 아니고 여자가 속아 죄에 빠졌음이라 15그러나 여자들이 만일 정숙함으로써 믿음과 사랑과 거룩함에 거하면 그의 해산함으로 구원을 얻으리라

8I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling;9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire,10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.11 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness.12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve;14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control. 

Thinking & Understanding

Paul expressed his desire that all believers would live differently from the world. First, he said believing men should pray without anger or quarrelling. Women, he said, should not waste money and energies on adorning their appearance, but live simply and adorn themselves with good deeds that serve others. If a woman fulfilled her role in obedience and continued in faith, love, and holiness, she would be saved (vv. 8-15).

바울은 그리스도인들이 세상과 다른 방식으로 살아가야 한다고 권면합니다. 먼저, 남자들에게 화를 내거나 말다툼하지 말고 모든 곳에서 기도할 것을 강조합니다. 여자들에게는 외모를 꾸미는 일에 돈과 열정을 낭비하지 말고 소박하게 살면서 남을 돕고 섬기는 선행으로 자신을 꾸미라고 권면합니다. 여인이 순종의 자리에서 자신의 역할을 감당하며 믿음과 사랑과 거룩함을 지킨다면 구원을 얻을 것입니다(8-15절).

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 9-10 Believers should adorn themselves with good deeds. Such adornment is not like the adornments of the world, but an inward adornment that reflects the gospel and imitates Jesus. Over time, outward beauty will fade, but inward beauty is incorruptible and is more valuable to God.

그리스도인은 착한 행실로 자신을 꾸며야 합니다. 이 꾸밈은 세상을 닮은 외면보다는 주님을 닮은 내면이고, 복음을 따라 사는 삶입니다. 시간이 지나면 외적인 아름다움은 사라지지만, 내면의 아름다움은 썩지 않기에 하나님께 더욱 값지게 인정받을 것입니다.

V. 15 The virtues of the Christian life are to live in faith, love, and holiness as we do the work entrusted to each one of us. In the past, men’s never-ending labour and women’s pain in childbirth were a curse that are now restored in Christ to become works of salvation—a work of service to creation. How does my work contribute to God’s work of creation and salvation?

그리스도인의 미덕은 믿음과 사랑과 거룩함으로 각자에게 맡겨진 일을 감당하며 사는 것입니다. 전에는 저주였던 끝없는 노동과 출산의 고통이, 이제는 그리스도 안에서 구원의 일, 창조세계를 섬기는 일로 회복됩니다. 나의 일은 하나님의 창조와 구원 사역에 어떻게 기여합니까?

Lord, help me live as a devoted follower of Christ and not according to the ways of the world.
