3장에서 바울은 감독의 자격(1-7절)과 집사의 자격(8-13절)을 알려줍니다. 일상을 등한시하는 거짓 교사들과는 달리, 교회의 지도자는 일상이 아름다운 사람이어야 합니다.

1미쁘다 이 말이여, 곧 사람이 감독의 직분을 얻으려 함은 선한 일을 사모하는 것이라 함이로다 2그러므로 감독은 책망할 것이 없으며 한 아내의 남편이 되며 절제하며 신중하며 단정하며 나그네를 대접하며 가르치기를 잘하며 3술을 즐기지 아니하며 구타하지 아니하며 오직 관용하며 다투지 아니하며 돈을 사랑하지 아니하며

 4자기 집을 잘 다스려 자녀들로 모든 공손함으로 복종하게 하는 자라야 할지며 5(사람이 자기 집을 다스릴 줄 알지 못하면 어찌 하나님의 교회를 돌보리요)

 6새로 입교한 자도 말지니 교만하여져서 마귀를 정죄하는 그 정죄에 빠질까 함이요 7또한 외인에게서도 선한 증거를 얻은 자라야 할지니 비방과 마귀의 올무에 빠질까 염려하라

[ 1 Timothy 3:1 - 3:7 ]

1The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task.2 Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,3 not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.4 He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive,5 for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church?6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil.7 Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil. 

Who is God like?

When raising up an overseer for the church, certain qualifications had to be met. He had to be a man who was respected in his home, community, and outside the church. He had to be blameless, especially to outsiders. His home, social, and church life had to be well-respected after being carefully observed from different angles. An overseer should take good care of his family, being honest and good everywhere, and being a mature believer who could serve and lead others (vv. 1-7).

교회의 일꾼을 세울 때는 반드시 자질과 자격을 검증해야 합니다. 감독은 가정과 공동체와 교회 밖에서 모두 인정받는 사람이어야 합니다. 특히 외부 사람들에게 흠 잡힐 것이 있어서는 안 됩니다. 가정생활, 사회생활, 교회생활을 다각도로 엄밀하게 점검해야 합니다. 가정을 잘 돌보는 사람, 교회 밖 세상에서도 정직하고 착한 사람, 성숙한 신앙인으로서 남을 섬기고 이끌어줄 수 있는 사람을 감독으로 세워야 합니다(1-7절).

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 2-3 An overseer had to be able to exert self-control, especially over the temptations of sex, alcohol, and money, while pursuing a life of sober-mindedness and holiness (6:6), not one of self-indulgence and greed. He who had both professed with his mouth and shown with his life that he believed and followed Christ would be deemed worthy as an overseer that could shepherd the saints well. Think about these qualifications before desiring leadership positions.

감독은 자신을 먼저 다스릴 줄 알아야 합니다. 특히 성과 술과 돈의 유혹을 뿌리칠 수 있어야 하고, 방종과 탐욕이 아닌 절제와 자족의 삶(6:6)을 추구해야 합니다. 이처럼 신앙고백과 그 고백에 어울리는 삶을 모두 갖출 때 성도를 잘 목양할 수 있습니다. 지도자의 자리보다 자격에 대해 먼저 고심해보십시오.

Vv. 6-7 We must be careful not to fall into the devil’s snare. If we give an immature believer an important position, they will fall into pride. If such a person is in a position of authority, the church will lose credibility. Though salvation is freely given and received, earning a position of authority within the church is subject to a thorough and rigorous check of qualifications. 

마귀의 올무에 빠지지 않도록 주의해야 합니다. 성숙하지 못한 신자에게 중직을 맡긴다면 교만에 빠질 것입니다. 세상에서 비난받는 사람이 직분자라면 교회는 신뢰를 잃을 것입니다. 구원은 자격 없이 받지만, 직분은 철저하고 엄격한 자격을 물어야 하는 이유입니다.

God, raise up godly and faithful leaders so that the church may grow holistically.
