바울은 집사의 자격을 소개하고, 이어서 교회의 고귀한 정체와 복음의 위대한 진리를 피력합니다. 교회가 어떤 곳인지 알면 교회에서 어떻게 해야 하는지 알 수 있기 때문입니다.

8이와 같이 집사들도 정중하고 일구이언을 하지 아니하고 술에 인박히지 아니하고 더러운 이를 탐하지 아니하고 9깨끗한 양심에 믿음의 비밀을 가진 자라야 할지니 10이에 이 사람들을 먼저 시험하여 보고 그 후에 책망할 것이 없으면 집사의 직분을 맡게 할 것이요 11여자들도 이와 같이 정숙하고 모함하지 아니하며 절제하며 모든 일에 충성된 자라야 할지니라 12집사들은 한 아내의 남편이 되어 자녀와 자기 집을 잘 다스리는 자일지니 13집사의 직분을 잘한 자들은 아름다운 지위와 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 믿음에 큰 담력을 얻느니라

 14내가 속히 네게 가기를 바라나 이것을 네게 쓰는 것은 15만일 내가 지체하면 너로 하여금 하나님의 집에서 어떻게 행하여야 할지를 알게 하려 함이니 이 집은 살아 계신 하나님의 교회요 진리의 기둥과 터니라

 16크도다 경건의 비밀이여, 그렇지 않다 하는 이 없도다 그는 육신으로 나타난 바 되시고 영으로 의롭다 하심을 받으시고 천사들에게 보이시고 만국에서 전파되시고 세상에서 믿은 바 되시고 영광 가운데서 올려지셨느니라

[ 1 Timothy 3:8 - 3:16 ]

8Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain.9 They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.10 And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless.11 Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things.12 Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well.13 For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.14 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that,15 if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory. 

 Thinking & Understanding

If a deacon served as one of the leaders in the church in Ephesus, they would become the hands and feet of the overseer. Like the overseer, deacons must be selected based on a rigorous examination of their home, social, and church lives (vv. 8-13). Paul called on the overseers and deacons of the Ephesian church to be “a pillar and buttress of the truth” and to take an unwavering stand against false teachers (vv. 14-16).

감독이 에베소 교회의 지도자 역할을 한다면, 집사는 감독의 지도를 따라 실무적인 역할을 담당할 것입니다. 집사 역시 감독과 마찬가지로 가정생활, 사회생활, 교회생활을 엄밀하게 점검하여 선발해야 합니다(8-13절). 바울은 에베소 교회의 감독들과 집사들이 ‘진리의 기둥과 터’가 되어 흔들림 없이 거짓 교사들에게 대항할 것을 부탁합니다(14-16절).

Who is God?

Vv. 14-16 Jesus is the secret to godliness. This is not a secret for a few people to know—it is an open secret revealed to the whole world in Christ, transforming the lives of all saints who trust in Him. Beware of those who try to monopolize the gospel as a secret to a blessed life or as something reserved for a select few.

예수님이 곧 경건의 비밀입니다. 소수가 아니라 모두를 위한, 닫힌 비밀이 아니라 열린 비밀입니다. 그리스도 안에서 온 세상에 드러나고 성도의 삶을 바꾸는 믿음의 비밀입니다. 복음을 복 받기 위한 비결이나 특정인들을 위한 전유물로 독점하려는 자들을 경계합시다.

What lesson is God teaching me?

V. 13 Those who fulfil their duties well will be rewarded. Your faith in Jesus will grow deeper, wider, and stronger. Those who have served well and faithfully will share in their master’s joy (Matt. 25:21,23). You will shine like the stars in the sky because you have turned many to the right path (Dan 12:3). In a way, saving others and building community saves you.

직분을 잘 수행한 자에게는 보상이 주어집니다. 예수 안에 있는 믿음이 더 깊고 넓고 단단해집니다. 착하고 충성되게 섬겼으니 주인의 즐거움에 참여할 것입니다(마 25:21, 23). 많은 이를 옳은 데로 돌아오게 하였으니 하늘의 별처럼 빛날 것입니다(단. 12:3). 남을 살리고 공동체를 세우는 일은 결국 나를 살리는 일입니다.

Lord, purify the lives of everyone in the church so that we do not compromise the secret of the gospel.
