바울은 장로에 대한 예우, 장로의 권징 및 임명에 관한 지침과 이를 처리할 목회자의 태도를 가르친 후에 상전을 대하는 종의 자세를 다룹니다.

[ 디모데전서 5:17 - 6:2 ] (찬송329장)

17잘 다스리는 장로들은 배나 존경할 자로 알되 말씀과 가르침에 수고하는 이들에게는 더욱 그리할 것이니라 18성경에 일렀으되 곡식을 밟아 떠는 소의 입에 망을 씌우지 말라 하였고 또 일꾼이 그 삯을 받는 것은 마땅하다 하였느니라

 19장로에 대한 고발은 두세 증인이 없으면 받지 말 것이요 20범죄한 자들을 모든 사람 앞에서 꾸짖어 나머지 사람들로 두려워하게 하라

 21하나님과 그리스도 예수와 택하심을 받은 천사들 앞에서 내가 엄히 명하노니 너는 편견이 없이 이것들을 지켜 아무 일도 불공평하게 하지 말며

 22아무에게나 경솔히 안수하지 말고 다른 사람의 죄에 간섭하지 말며 네 자신을 지켜 정결하게 하라 23이제부터는 물만 마시지 말고 네 위장과 자주 나는 병을 위하여는 포도주를 조금씩 쓰라 24어떤 사람들의 죄는 밝히 드러나 먼저 심판에 나아가고 어떤 사람들의 죄는 그 뒤를 따르나니 25이와 같이 선행도 밝히 드러나고 그렇지 아니한 것도 숨길 수 없느니라 

 6:1무릇 멍에 아래에 있는 종들은 자기 상전들을 범사에 마땅히 공경할 자로 알지니 이는 하나님의 이름과 교훈으로 비방을 받지 않게 하려 함이라 2믿는 상전이 있는 자들은 그 상전을 형제라고 가볍게 여기지 말고 더 잘 섬기게 하라 이는 유익을 받는 자들이 믿는 자요 사랑을 받는 자임이라 너는 이것들을 가르치고 권하라

[ 1 Timothy 5:17 - 6:2 ]

17Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.”19 Do not admit a charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses.20 As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear.21 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging, doing nothing from partiality.22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure.23 (No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.)24 The sins of some people are conspicuous, going before them to judgment, but the sins of others appear later.25 So also good works are conspicuous, and even those that are not cannot remain hidden.6 :1Let all who are under a yoke as bondservants regard their own masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be reviled.2 Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are brothers; rather they must serve all the better since those who benefit by their good service are believers and beloved. Teach and urge these things. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Timothy and the other elders in leadership roles were to be treated with double honour. They were to be shown respect for the authority given to them and were to be rewarded fairly for their hard work. If an elder was accused of doing something wrong, the accusation had to be investigated first. He would have to be punished firmly if found guilty. Because the role of an elder was so important, Paul urged Timothy to select elders very carefully (5:17-25). Finally, slaves were to honour their masters, and if their masters were fellow believers, they were to serve them all the better (6:1-2).

디모데와 함께 지도자 역할을 하는 장로들은 더욱 세심하게 챙겨야 합니다. 존경을 표하여 권위를 세워주고, 수고에 대한 보상도 공정하게 해줘야 합니다. 장로가 잘못을 저지를 경우엔, 먼저 모함인지를 엄밀히 살피고 죄가 드러나면 단호히 처벌해야 합니다. 장로의 역할이 막중하므로, 바울은 애초에 장로를 선출할 때 면밀히 검토하라고 권면합니다(5:17-25). 마지막으로 노예 신분인 성도는 주인을 존경해야 하며, 주인이 성도일 경우 더 잘 섬기라고 권면합니다(6:1-2).

What lesson is God teaching me?

5:24-25 One day, people’s evil and good deeds will be made plain, but for now, it is hard to see the heart of all deeds, so discernment is needed to see through them. Let us be careful not to judge people based on what we see on the surface. 

언젠가 사람들의 악행과 선행이 명백하게 드러날 것입니다. 그러나 지금은 잘 드러나지 않기 때문에 중심을 보는 분별력이 필요합니다. 사람을 세울 때 겉으로 드러나는 것에만 치우쳐 판단하지 않도록 조심합시다.

6:1-2 The bondservants were urged to honour their masters, not because Paul was advocating for slavery, but because God’s name and precepts—that is, the gospel—would be slandered by the friction and conflict caused by a bondservant’s disobedience. Even if we may not necessarily preach the gospel with words, our lives will reveal what we believe.

종들에게 상전에 대한 ‘공경’을 당부합니다. 노예 제도를 옹호해서가 아닙니다. 종들의 불복으로 인한 마찰과 갈등으로 하나님의 이름과 교훈(복음)이 비방을 받을 수 있기 때문입니다. 말로 복음을 전하지 않더라도 우리의 삶이 우리가 믿는 바를 드러낼 것입니다.

Lord, help us to be discerning and not lose sight of giving honour where honour is due, whether in church or society.
