환난 때의 징조들
14멸망의 가증한 것이 서지 못할 곳에 선 것을 보거든 (읽는 자는 깨달을진저) 그 때에 유대에 있는 자들은 산으로 도망할지어다 15지붕 위에 있는 자는 내려가지도 말고 집에 있는 무엇을 가지러 들어가지도 말며 16밭에 있는 자는 겉옷을 가지러 뒤로 돌이키지 말지어다 17그 날에는 아이 밴 자들과 젖먹이는 자들에게 화가 있으리로다 18이 일이 겨울에 일어나지 않도록 기도하라 19이는 그 날들이 환난의 날이 되겠음이라 하나님께서 창조하신 시초부터 지금까지 이런 환난이 없었고 후에도 없으리라 20만일 주께서 그 날들을 감하지 아니하셨더라면 모든 육체가 구원을 얻지 못할 것이거늘 자기가 택하신 자들을 위하여 그 날들을 감하셨느니라 21그 때에 어떤 사람이 너희에게 말하되 보라 그리스도가 여기 있다 보라 저기 있다 하여도 믿지 말라 22거짓 그리스도들과 거짓 선지자들이 일어나서 이적과 기사를 행하여 할 수만 있으면 택하신 자들을 미혹하려 하리라 23너희는 삼가라 내가 모든 일을 너희에게 미리 말하였노라

인자의 오심
24그 때에 그 환난 후 해가 어두워지며 달이 빛을 내지 아니하며 25별들이 하늘에서 떨어지며 하늘에 있는 권능들이 흔들리리라 26그 때에 인자가 구름을 타고 큰 권능과 영광으로 오는 것을 사람들이 보리라 27또 그 때에 그가 천사들을 보내어 자기가 택하신 자들을 땅 끝으로부터 하늘 끝까지 사방에서 모으리라

마지막 때를 준비하는 제자의 자세
28무화과나무의 비유를 배우라 그 가지가 연하여지고 잎사귀를 내면 여름이 가까운 줄 아나니 29이와 같이 너희가 이런 일이 일어나는 것을 보거든 인자가 가까이 곧 문 앞에 이른 줄 알라 30내가 진실로 너희에게 말하노니 이 세대가 지나가기 전에 이 일이 다 일어나리라 31천지는 없어지겠으나 내 말은 없어지지 아니하리라 32그러나 그 날과 그 때는 아무도 모르나니 하늘에 있는 천사들도, 아들도 모르고 아버지만 아시느니라 33주의하라 깨어 있으라 그 때가 언제인지 알지 못함이라 34가령 사람이 집을 떠나 타국으로 갈 때에 그 종들에게 권한을 주어 각각 사무를 맡기며 문지기에게 깨어 있으라 명함과 같으니 35그러므로 깨어 있으라 집 주인이 언제 올는지 혹 저물 때일는지, 밤중일는지, 닭 울 때일는지, 새벽일는지 너희가 알지 못함이라 36그가 홀연히 와서 너희가 자는 것을 보지 않도록 하라 37깨어 있으라 내가 너희에게 하는 이 말은 모든 사람에게 하는 말이니라 하시니라

하나님은 어떤 분입니까?
14-20절 택하신 자들을 위해 고통의 날을 감하십니다. 주님은 창조 이래 볼 수 없었던 가장 큰 재앙이 닥칠 거라고 말씀하십니다. 그것은 ‘멸망의 가증한 것’이 ‘서지 못할 곳’에 세워질 때 시작될 것입니다. 대부분의 재앙이 인간이 자초한 결과이듯이, 이 재앙도 신실하지 못한 유다와 폭력과 전쟁을 일삼던 로마제국이 만들어낸 합작품이었습니다. 그러나 노아의 때에 노아의 가족을 보호하신 하나님은 마지막 때의 재앙에서도 자기 백성을 긍휼히 여기시고 그들을 위해 환난의 날을 감하실 것입니다.

24-27절 마지막 때에 예수님의 왕권을 드러내실 것입니다. ‘인자’(단 7:13)는 ‘사람의 아들’이라는 뜻으로 인간이 되어 오신 예수님을 가리키는 말입니다. 성경은 ‘인자 같은 이’를 하나님으로부터 나라를 받은 이스라엘을 대표하는 인물로 묘사합니다(단 7:13,14). 먼저 인자가 고난받고 죽임당하는 일이 있겠지만(8:31; 9:31; 10:33,45), 장차 세상을 심판하시고 자기 백성을 사방에서 모으는 왕으로 다시 오실 것입니다. ‘사람의 아들’이 세상을 심판하시는 ‘하나님의 아들’로 오시는 것처럼, 그때 고난받고 멸시받던 주의 제자들도 주님과 함께 세상을 심판하는 자리에 앉게 될 것입니다(마 19:28).

내게주시는교훈은무엇입니까?

21-23절 환난의 때에 가장 경계해야 할 것은 외부의 핍박보다 내부의 혼란입니다. 환란을 견디며 주님의 오심을 간절히 기다리는 이들의 마음을 이용하는 거짓 선지자들이 공동체 안에 득세할 것이기 때문입니다. 그들의 놀라운 이적과 기사를 보더라도(살후 2:9) 속지 말아야 합니다. 말씀으로 그들의 교훈을 판단하고, 그들에게 어떤 희생과 섬김의 열매가 있는지 살펴보면 분별할 수 있을 것입니다(마 7:20).

28-37절 우리는 마지막 때를 정확히 알 수 없습니다. 하지만 그날이 점점 가까워진다는 사실만큼은 확신할 수 있습니다. 마치 무화과나무를 보고 때를 판단하듯이, 지혜로운 자는 마지막 때가 가까움을 깨달을 것입니다. 하나님 나라의 제자들은 세상을 섬기는 부지런한 청지기이자, 늘 깨어서 세상에 마지막 추수의 때를 알리는 파수꾼이 되어야 합니다.

기도
공동체-마지막 때를 지혜롭게 분별하며 주님 오심을 준비하게 하소서.

Always Be Awake

14 "But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
15 Let the one who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter his house, to take anything out,
16 and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak.
17 And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days!
18 Pray that it may not happen in winter.
19 For in those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will be.
20 And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days.
21 And then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'Look, there he is!' do not believe it.
22 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect.
23 But be on guard; I have told you all things beforehand.
24 "But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light,
25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
26 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.
27 And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
28 "From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near.
29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates.
30 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.
31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
32 "But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
33 Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come.
34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake.
35 Therefore stay awake--for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning--
36 lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.
37 And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake."

Thinking & Understanding
Jesus talked about the various signs and penultimate event that will occur before the destruction of the temple. These include the blasphemy of the antichrist, great tribulations, and the rise of false prophets. Jesus will come in great glory after all these things take place (vv. 14-27). Jesus again used the fig tree, which he had used earlier as a metaphor to illustrate the judgement of the temple (11:12-14,20-25), to explain to the disciples how to recognise the time of his return. However, as only God knows the exact day, his disciples must always be on guard and keep awake (vv. 28-37).

Who is God?
Vv. 24-27 Jesus will surely return. He will come in great glory, for all to see, and gather God’s people. Are we living with faith in hope of Jesus’ return?

What lesson is God teaching me?
Vv. 33-36 We must remember that time belongs to God and live each day as if today is the day of Christ’s return. Anticipating the Lord’s immediate return does not mean we must lay everything down. Rather, we must obey God’s word and do our utmost to fulfil the calling we have been entrusted with. What work has the Lord entrusted to us, and are we fulfilling it?

Prayer
Help us, Lord, to faithfully fulfil your calling by keeping awake at all times, so that we are always prepared to greet you joyfully.
