3예수께서 베다니 나병환자 시몬의 집에서 식사하실 때에 한 여자가 매우 값진 향유 곧 순전한 나드 한 옥합을 가지고 와서 그 옥합을 깨뜨려 예수의 머리에 부으니 4어떤 사람들이 화를 내어 서로 말하되 어찌하여 이 향유를 허비하는가 5이 향유를 삼백 데나리온 이상에 팔아 가난한 자들에게 줄 수 있었겠도다 하며 그 여자를 책망하는지라 6예수께서 이르시되 가만 두라 너희가 어찌하여 그를 괴롭게 하느냐 그가 내게 좋은 일을 하였느니라 7가난한 자들은 항상 너희와 함께 있으니 아무 때라도 원하는 대로 도울 수 있거니와 나는 너희와 항상 함께 있지 아니하리라 8그는 힘을 다하여 내 몸에 향유를 부어 내 장례를 미리 준비하였느니라 9내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 온 천하에 어디서든지 복음이 전파되는 곳에는 이 여자가 행한 일도 말하여 그를 기억하리라 하시니라

1,2절 사두개파가 장악했던 제사장 그룹과 바리새파 소속인 서기관들이 예수님을 제거하기 위해 결탁합니다. 그들은 예수님을 죽일 흉계를 꾸미지만, 유월절에 민란이 일어나는 것을 가장 경계하는 로마 군대의 비위를 건드리지 않기 위해서 명절 이후로 거사를 미룹니다. 그들이 두려워한 것은 하나님이 아니라 로마였고, 그들이 염려한 것도 권력을 유지할 방법이었습니다. 이를 위해서는 진리도 진실도 중요하지 않았기 때문에 흉계와 술수를 쓰는 데 거리낌이 없었습니다. 자기 부인의 삶 대신 자기 욕망을 따를 때, 우리도 주님을 대적하는 자리에 서게 될 수 있습니다.
3-9절 한 여자가 값진 향유 옥합을 예수님의 머리에 붓습니다. 곁에 있던 이들은 여인이 향유를 허비하여 가난한 이들을 위한 ‘자선’의 기회를 놓쳤다고 책망합니다. 그러나 예수님은 그가 예수님의 장례를 준비하는 ‘좋은 일’을 했다고 칭찬하십니다. 그리고 그가 한 일이 복음이 전해지는 곳마다 기억될 수 있게 하셨습니다. 오늘 우리 역시 복잡한 계산 대신 주님을 향한 최고의 경배와 헌신으로 나아갈 수 있길 소망합니다.
7절 우리 곁에는 늘 가난한 이들이 있습니다(신 15:11). 하나님은 이들을 우리 손에 부탁하시고, 지극히 작은 자에게 한 것이 주님께 한 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 이제 우리가 받는 도전은 가난한 자들을 돌보는 것입니다. 만약 주님께 드린다는 명목으로 가난한 자들을 외면하는 것은 옥합을 깬 여인의 행위를 왜곡하는 것입니다. 주님은 그런 행위를 외식이라 책망하실 것입니다.

본문 : 마가복음(Mark)14:1 - 14:11 찬송가 50장
1It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him,
2for they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people."
3And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.
4There were some who said to themselves indignantly, "Why was the ointment wasted like that?
5For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor." And they scolded her.
6But Jesus said, "Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
7For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me.
8She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial.
9And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her."
10Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them.
11And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to betray him.
Thinking & Understanding
The chief priests and the scribes plotted how to capture and kill Jesus (vv. 1-2). Meanwhile, when Jesus was feasting at Simon’s house a woman approached him with a flask of ointment and poured it over his head. Although some people criticised her for wasting expensive ointment, Jesus praised her for her loving heart and sacrifice (vv. 3-9). In contrast, because of his greed for money and power, Judas Iscariot went to the chief priests and betrayed Jesus (vv. 10-11).
Who is Jesus?
Vv. 7-9 Jesus remembers and praises us for our faith and labour. Although people angrily criticised the woman for wasting expensive ointment, Jesus knew her heart and praised her actions. Just as the woman served Jesus, we too must serve ‘the least among us’, because Jesus taught us that what we do for them we do for Jesus (Matt. 25:35-40).
What lesson is God teaching me?
Vv. 1-2,10-11 We must remember that we can stumble at any time, therefore we must be careful to always humbly follow the Lord. Judas betrayed the teacher he once served. He had followed Jesus in pursuit of personal gain, and when he felt that his greed was not being satisfied, he abandoned Jesus. If we are following Jesus for any other reason besides Jesus himself, we too are likely to abandon Jesus at any time. Why are we following Jesus?
Prayer
Help us, Lord, to never abandon you, but to devote ourselves to you by giving ourselves as an offering.
