네 고관이 예레미야를 반역자로 체포하여 물 없는 구덩이에 가둡니다. 하지만 구스인 에벳멜렉이 나서서 왕에게 예레미야의 구원을 간청하여 꺼냅니다.

1맛단의 아들 스바댜와 바스훌의 아들 그다랴와 셀레먀의 아들 유갈과 말기야의 아들 바스훌이 예레미야가 모든 백성에게 이르는 말을 들은즉 이르기를 2여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시되 이 성에 머무는 자는 칼과 기근과 전염병에 죽으리라 그러나 갈대아인에게 항복하는 자는 살리니 그는 노략물을 얻음 같이 자기의 목숨을 건지리라 3여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 이 성이 반드시 바벨론의 왕의 군대의 손에 넘어가리니 그가 차지하리라 하셨다 하는지라 4이에 그 고관들이 왕께 아뢰되 이 사람이 백성의 평안을 구하지 아니하고 재난을 구하오니 청하건대 이 사람을 죽이소서 그가 이같이 말하여 이 성에 남은 군사의 손과 모든 백성의 손을 약하게 하나이다

 5시드기야 왕이 이르되 보라 그가 너희 손 안에 있느니라 왕은 조금도 너희를 거스를 수 없느니라 하는지라 6그들이 예레미야를 끌어다가 감옥 뜰에 있는 왕의 아들 말기야의 구덩이에 던져 넣을 때에 예레미야를 줄로 달아내렸는데 그 구덩이에는 물이 없고 진창뿐이므로 예레미야가 진창 속에 빠졌더라

 7왕궁 내시 구스인 에벳멜렉이 그들이 예레미야를 구덩이에 던져 넣었음을 들으니라 그 때에 왕이 베냐민 문에 앉았더니 8에벳멜렉이 왕궁에서 나와 왕께 아뢰어 이르되 9내 주 왕이여 저 사람들이 선지자 예레미야에게 행한 모든 일은 악하니이다 성 중에 떡이 떨어졌거늘 그들이 그를 구덩이에 던져 넣었으니 그가 거기에서 굶어 죽으리이다 하니 10왕이 구스 사람 에벳멜렉에게 명령하여 이르되 너는 여기서 삼십 명을 데리고 가서 선지자 예레미야가 죽기 전에 그를 구덩이에서 끌어내라 11에벳멜렉이 사람들을 데리고 왕궁 곳간 밑 방에 들어가서 거기에서 헝겊과 낡은 옷을 가져다가 그것을 구덩이에 있는 예레미야에게 밧줄로 내리며 12구스인 에벳멜렉이 예레미야에게 이르되 당신은 이 헝겊과 낡은 옷을 당신의 겨드랑이에 대고 줄을 그 아래에 대시오 예레미야가 그대로 하매 13그들이 줄로 예레미야를 구덩이에서 끌어낸지라 예레미야가 시위대 뜰에 머무니라

[ Jeremiah 38:1 - 38:13 ]

1Now Shephatiah the son of Mattan, Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchiah heard the words that Jeremiah was saying to all the people:2 “Thus says the LORD: He who stays in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, but he who goes out to the Chaldeans shall live. He shall have his life as a prize of war, and live.3 Thus says the LORD: This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon and be taken.”4 Then the officials said to the king, “Let this man be put to death, for he is weakening the hands of the soldiers who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but their harm.”5 King Zedekiah said, “Behold, he is in your hands, for the king can do nothing against you.”6 So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king's son, which was in the court of the guard, letting Jeremiah down by ropes. And there was no water in the cistern, but only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud.7 When Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern—the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate—8Ebed-melech went from the king's house and said to the king,9 “My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they did to Jeremiah the prophet by casting him into the cistern, and he will die there of hunger, for there is no bread left in the city.”10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, “Take thirty men with you from here, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.”11 So Ebed-melech took the men with him and went to the house of the king, to a wardrobe in the storehouse, and took from there old rags and worn-out clothes, which he let down to Jeremiah in the cistern by ropes.12 Then Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Put the rags and clothes between your armpits and the ropes.” Jeremiah did so.13 Then they drew Jeremiah up with ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.
