게바가 안디옥에 이르렀을 때에…내가 그를 대면하여 책망하였노라. (갈라디아서 2:11)
화해라는 주제의 원탁 토론에서 한 참석자의 말이 지혜로웠습니다. “사람을 어떤 시간에 묶어 얼려놓지 마십시오.” 그는 사람들의 실수를 오래 기억하고 만회할 수 있는 기회는 주지 않는 우리의 성향을 이야기한 것입니다.
베드로의 삶에서도 하나님이 그를 “얼려놓을” 수 있었던 많은 순간들이 있었습니다. 그러나 하나님은 한 번도 그러시지 않았습니다. 충동적인 성격의 제자 베드로는 예수님에게 “훈계”까지 하다가 무서운 책망을 받았습니다(마 16:21-23). 그가 그리스도를 부인한 것은 유명한 일이고(요 18:15-27) 나중에 가서야 회복이 되었습니다(21:15-19). 그리고 한 번은 교회 안에서 인종차별 문제도 만들었습니다.
게바라고도 하는 베드로가 이방인과 자기를 구별하면서 문제가 생겼습니다(갈 2:11-12). 그가 이방인들과 자유롭게 어울린 것이 얼마 안 된 때였습니다. 그러나 그리스도를 믿는 사람들도 할례를 받아야 한다고 주장하는 몇몇 유대인들이 오자 베드로는 할례 받지 않은 이방인들을 피하기 시작했습니다. 이것은 모세의 율법으로 돌아가는 위험한 일이었습니다. 바울은 베드로의 행동을 “위선”이라고 했습니다(13절). 바울이 담대하게 지적했기 때문에 문제가 해결되었습니다. 베드로는 하나님의 뜻대로 우리를 하나 되게 하시는 영으로 계속 하나님을 섬겼습니다.

13. 남은 유대인들도 그와 같이 외식하므로 바나바도 그들의 외식에 유혹되었느니라
14. 그러므로 나는 그들이 복음의 진리를 따라 바르게 행하지 아니함을 보고 모든 자 앞에서 게바에게 이르되 네가 유대인으로서 이방인을 따르고 유대인답게 살지 아니하면서 어찌하여 억지로 이방인을 유대인답게 살게 하려느냐 하였노라.

Unfrozen [ Galatians 2:11 - 2:16 ] - hymn 219
When Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was clearly in the wrong.(Galatians 2:11)
At a roundtable discussion about reconciliation, one par- ticipant wisely said, “Don’t freeze people in time.” He observed how we tend to remember mistakes people make and never grant them the opportunity to change.
There are so many moments in Peter’s life when God could have “frozen” him in time. But He
never did. Peter—the impulsive disci- ple—“corrected” Jesus, earning a sharp rebuke from the Lord (MATTHEW 16:21–23). He famously denied Christ (JOHN 18:15–27), only to be restored later (21:15–19). And he once contributed to racial divisions within the church.
The issue arose when Peter (also called Cephas) had sepa- rated himself from the Gentiles (GALATIANS 2:11–12). Only recently he associated freely with them. But some Jews arrived who insisted that circumcision was required for believers in Christ, so Peter began avoiding the uncircumcised Gentiles. This marked a dangerous return to the law of Moses. Paul called Peter’s behav- ior “hypocrisy” (V . 13). Because of Paul’s bold confrontation, the issue was resolved. Peter went on to serve God in the beautiful spirit of unity He intends for us.
No one needs to remain frozen in their worst moments. In God’s grace we can embrace each other, learn from each other, confront each other when it’s necessary, and grow together in His love. TIM GUSTAFSON

12. Before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group.
13. The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.
14. When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter in front of them all, "You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?
15. "We who are Jews by birth and not `Gentile sinners'
16. know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.

○게바가 안디옥에 이르렀을 때에 책망 받을 일이 있기로 내가 그를 대면하여 책망하였노라 .......
게바(베드로)가 주님의 제자된 그리스도인으로서 책망 받을 일을 한 것이 사실입니다.
할례를 주장하는 무리들을 두려워한 나머지 이방인과 식사자리를 피했던 것입니다.
베드로가 안티옥에 왔을 때에 바울이 그 문제로 책망(withstand)하였습니다.
바울은 게바를 대면하여(to his face) 책망하였습니다.
이것은 뒤에서 참소하는 것과는 달리 그리스도의 사랑으로, 그러나 담대하게 충고한 것이라고 봅니다.
그 결과 베드로는 회개하였을 터이고 결국 하나님의 역사는 더욱 활발하고 확실하게 일어났을 것입니다.
대면하여(to his face)....
누군가의 약점과 허물을 그의 뒤에서 책망하는 것은 비난과 참소인지라 마귀가 사용하게 마련입니다.
그리스도의 사랑을 가지고 인격적으로 "대면하여" 책망하는 것은 더 아름다운 관계로 발전하게 됩니다.
베드로와 바울의 모습을 상상해 보면서 마음 깊은 곳에 감동이 일어납니다.
교회가 이런 모습이어야 하고, 성도의 관계성이 또한 이리 되어야 합니다.
우리 지구촌 교회가 그런 교회입니다. 할렐루야 !
