그리스도의 사도, 바울’이라는 영화는 초대교회 시기에 있었던 박해를 생생하게 보여주고 있습니다. 영화 속의 단역배우들까지도 예수님을 따르는 것이 얼마나 위험한 것인지 잘 보여줍니다. 영화가 끝난 후 보여주는 배역 명단에 나오는 다음 배역들을 한 번 생각해보십시오. 두들겨 맞은 여자, 두들겨 맞은 남자, 희생된 그리스도인 1,2,3.
사람들은 그리스도와 연관된 것으로 밝혀지면 종종 엄청난 대가를 치렀습니다. 지금도 세계 여러 곳에서는 예수님을 믿는 것이 위험합니다. 오늘날의 많은 교인들도 그와 같은 박해를 받을 수 있습니다. 어쩌면 우리 중에는 이미 “박해를 받았다” 고 생각하는 사람들이 있을지 모릅니다. 우리의 믿음이 조롱당했을 때 화가 치밀거나, 우리의 믿음 때문에 승진에서 누락되었다고 의심이 들기도 합니다.
사회적 지위가 희생당하는 것과 생명을 잃는 것 사이에는 분명히 엄청난 차이가 있습니다. 그러나 현실적으로는 자기 이익과 경제적 안정, 사회적 인정 같은 것들이 언제나 인간의 삶에서 강력한 동기요인이 되어왔습니다. 우리는 예수님을 따르기로 한 초기 신자들의 행동 가운데서도 그런 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 요한 사도는 이렇게 전하고 있습니다. 예수님이 십자가 처형을 당하시기 불과 며칠 전, 대부분의 이스라엘 사람들은 여전히 그를 거부했지만 (요한복음 12:37) “관리 중에도 그를 믿는 자가 많되”(42절) “드러나게 말하지 못하니. 그들은 사람의 영광을 하나님의 영광보다 더 사랑하였더라”(42-43절).
오늘날 우리는 여전히 기독교 신앙을 밖으로 드러내지 말라는 사회적 압력에 (그것도 더 심하게) 직면해 있습니다. 우리 모두 단결하여 어떤 희생을 치르더라도 사람의 칭찬보다는 하나님으로부터 인정받는 백성들이 됩시다.

* 신앙을 숨겼던 초대교회의 성도들을 심판하고 싶은 마음이 들지 모르지만, 과연 우리의 모습은 그들과 차이가 없는지요? 우리가 예수님을 믿는 사람인 것을 숨기려고 침묵하려 한 때는 없습니까?

* 예수님, 예수님의 절친한 친구가 되기를 원합니다.

37. 이렇게 많은 표적을 그들 앞에서 행하셨으나 그를 믿지 아니하니
38. 이는 선지자 이사야의 말씀을 이루려 하심이라 이르되 주여 우리에게서 들은 바를 누가 믿었으며 주의 팔이 누구에게 나타났나이까 하였더라
39. 그들이 능히 믿지 못한 것은 이 때문이니 곧 이사야가 다시 일렀으되
40. 그들의 눈을 멀게 하시고 그들의 마음을 완고하게 하셨으니 이는 그들로 하여금 눈으로 보고 마음으로 깨닫고 돌이켜 내게 고침을 받지 못하게 하려 함이라 하였음이더라
41. 이사야가 이렇게 말한 것은 주의 영광을 보고 주를 가리켜 말한 것이라

Whatever the Cost [ John 12:37 - 12:43 ] - hymn 336
They would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear. (John 12:42)

The film Paul, Apostle of Christ takes an unflinching look at persecution in the early days of the church. Even the movie’s minor characters reveal how dangerous it was to follow Jesus. Consider these roles listed in the credits: Beaten Woman; Beaten Man; Christian Victims 1, 2, and 3.
Identifying with Christ often came at a high cost. And in much of the world, it’s still dangerous to follow Jesus. Many in the church today can relate to that kind of persecution. Some of us, however, may feel “persecuted” prematurely—outraged any time our faith is mocked or we suspect we were passed over for a promotion because of our beliefs.
Obviously, there’s a colossal difference between sacrificing social status and sacrificing our lives. Realistically, though, self-interest, financial stability, and social acceptance have always been intense human motivators. We see this in the actions of some of Jesus’s earliest converts. The apostle John reports that, mere days before Jesus’s crucifixion, although most Israelites were still rejecting Him(John 12:37), many “even among the leaders believed” (V. 42).
However, “They would not openly acknowledge their faith . . . for they loved human praise more than praise from God” (VV. 42–43).
Today we still face societal pressures (and worse) to keep our faith in Christ hidden. Whatever the cost, let’s stand together as a people who seek God’s approval more than human praise. TIM GUSTAFSON

* We might be tempted to judge the early believers who hid their faith, but are we any different? Are there times we choose to be quiet so we can hide our identification with Jesus?

37. Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.
38. This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"
39. For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
40. "He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn -- and I would heal them."
41. Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him.
42. Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;
43. for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.
