블레셋 앞에서 모두 숨고 도망하기 바쁠 때, 요나단이 나서서 하나님의 뜻을 묻고 블레셋을 기습하여 전세를 역전시킵니다. 

[ 사무엘상 14:1 - 14:23 ] (찬송586장)

블레셋을 치러 가는 요나단 

1하루는 사울의 아들 요나단이 자기의 무기를 든 소년에게 이르되 우리가 건너편 블레셋 사람들의 부대로 건너가자 하고 그의 아버지에게는 아뢰지 아니하였더라 2사울이 기브아 변두리 미그론에 있는 석류나무 아래에 머물렀고 함께 한 백성은 육백 명 가량이며 3아히야는 에봇을 입고 거기 있었으니 그는 이가봇의 형제 아히둡의 아들이요 비느하스의 손자요 실로에서 여호와의 제사장이 되었던 엘리의 증손이었더라 백성은 요나단이 간 줄을 알지 못하니라 4요나단이 블레셋 사람들에게로 건너가려 하는 어귀 사이 이쪽에는 험한 바위가 있고 저쪽에도 험한 바위가 있는데 하나의 이름은 보세스요 하나의 이름은 세네라 5한 바위는 북쪽에서 믹마스 앞에 일어섰고 하나는 남쪽에서 게바 앞에 일어섰더라

 요나단의 승리 

6요나단이 자기의 무기를 든 소년에게 이르되 우리가 이 할례 받지 않은 자들에게로 건너가자 여호와께서 우리를 위하여 일하실까 하노라 여호와의 구원은 사람이 많고 적음에 달리지 아니하였느니라 7무기를 든 자가 그에게 이르되 당신의 마음에 있는 대로 다 행하여 앞서 가소서 내가 당신과 마음을 같이 하여 따르리이다 8요나단이 이르되 보라 우리가 그 사람들에게로 건너가서 그들에게 보이리니 9그들이 만일 우리에게 이르기를 우리가 너희에게로 가기를 기다리라 하면 우리는 우리가 있는 곳에 가만히 서서 그들에게로 올라가지 말 것이요 10그들이 만일 말하기를 우리에게로 올라오라 하면 우리가 올라갈 것은 여호와께서 그들을 우리 손에 넘기셨음이니 이것이 우리에게 표징이 되리라 하고 11둘이 다 블레셋 사람들에게 보이매 블레셋 사람이 이르되 보라 히브리 사람이 그들이 숨었던 구멍에서 나온다 하고 12그 부대 사람들이 요나단과 그의 무기를 든 자에게 이르되 우리에게로 올라오라 너희에게 보여 줄 것이 있느니라 한지라 요나단이 자기의 무기를 든 자에게 이르되 나를 따라 올라오라 여호와께서 그들을 이스라엘의 손에 넘기셨느니라 하고 13요나단이 손 발로 기어 올라갔고 그 무기를 든 자도 따랐더라 블레셋 사람들이 요나단 앞에서 엎드러지매 무기를 든 자가 따라가며 죽였으니 14요나단과 그 무기를 든 자가 반나절 갈이 땅 안에서 처음으로 쳐죽인 자가 이십 명 가량이라 15들에 있는 진영과 모든 백성들이 공포에 떨었고 부대와 노략꾼들도 떨었으며 땅도 진동하였으니 이는 큰 떨림이었더라

 이스라엘의 대승 

16베냐민 기브아에 있는 사울의 파수꾼이 바라본즉 허다한 블레셋 사람들이 무너져 이리 저리 흩어지더라 17사울이 자기와 함께 한 백성에게 이르되 우리에게서 누가 나갔는지 점호하여 보라 하여 점호한즉 요나단과 그의 무기를 든 자가 없어졌더라 18사울이 아히야에게 이르되 하나님의 궤를 이리로 가져오라 하니 그 때에 하나님의 궤가 이스라엘 자손과 함께 있음이니라 19사울이 제사장에게 말할 때에 블레셋 사람들의 진영에 소동이 점점 더한지라 사울이 제사장에게 이르되 네 손을 거두라 하고 20사울과 그와 함께 한 모든 백성이 모여 전장에 가서 본즉 블레셋 사람들이 각각 칼로 자기의 동무들을 치므로 크게 혼란하였더라 21전에 블레셋 사람들과 함께 하던 히브리 사람이 사방에서 블레셋 사람들과 함께 진영에 들어왔더니 그들이 돌이켜 사울과 요나단과 함께 한 이스라엘 사람들과 합하였고 22에브라임 산지에 숨었던 이스라엘 모든 사람도 블레셋 사람들이 도망함을 듣고 싸우러 나와서 그들을 추격하였더라 23여호와께서 그 날에 이스라엘을 구원하시므로 전쟁이 벧아웬을 지나니라

[ 1 Samuel 14:1 - 14:23 ]

1One day Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go over to the Philistine garrison on the other side.” But he did not tell his father.2 Saul was staying in the outskirts of Gibeah in the pomegranate cave at Migron. The people who were with him were about six hundred men,3 including Ahijah the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, son of Phinehas, son of Eli, the priest of the LORD in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people did not know that Jonathan had gone.4 Within the passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistine garrison, there was a rocky crag on the one side and a rocky crag on the other side. The name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.5 The one crag rose on the north in front of Michmash, and the other on the south in front of Geba.6 Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the LORD will work for us, for nothing can hinder the LORD from saving by many or by few.”7 And his armor-bearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Do as you wish. Behold, I am with you heart and soul.”8 Then Jonathan said, “Behold, we will cross over to the men, and we will show ourselves to them.9 If they say to us, ‘Wait until we come to you,’ then we will stand still in our place, and we will not go up to them.10 But if they say, ‘Come up to us,’ then we will go up, for the LORD has given them into our hand. And this shall be the sign to us.”11 So both of them showed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said, “Look, Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden themselves.”12 And the men of the garrison hailed Jonathan and his armor-bearer and said, “Come up to us, and we will show you a thing.” And Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, “Come up after me, for the LORD has given them into the hand of Israel.”13 Then Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, and his armor-bearer after him. And they fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer killed them after him.14 And that first strike, which Jonathan and his armor-bearer made, killed about twenty men within as it were half a furrow’s length in an acre of land.15 And there was a panic in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. The garrison and even the raiders trembled, the earth quaked, and it became a very great panic.16 And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and behold, the multitude was dispersing here and there.17 Then Saul said to the people who were with him, “Count and see who has gone from us.” And when they had counted, behold, Jonathan and his armor-bearer were not there.18 So Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the ark of God here.” For the ark of God went at that time with the people of Israel.19 Now while Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the camp of the Philistines increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.”20 Then Saul and all the people who were with him rallied and went into the battle. And behold, every Philistine’s sword was against his fellow, and there was very great confusion.21 Now the Hebrews who had been with the Philistines before that time and who had gone up with them into the camp, even they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.22 Likewise, when all the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were fleeing, they too followed hard after them in the battle.23 So the LORD saved Israel that day. Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Saul’s son Jonathan launched a surprise attack on the Philistines with just one aide when the army’s military strength and morale had hit rock bottom. This was because Jonathan had faith that victory in battle did not depend on the number of men but on God. Through this surprise attack and God’s support (earthquake and panic), the balance of power was completely reversed in one fell swoop (vv. 1-23). 

Who is God?

Vv. 16-23 God accomplishes great and many deeds even through small means. Through just two people, Jonathan and his aide, God completely turned the tables on a battle that the Israelites had no chance of winning. God’s works are not accomplished through strategies or a specific set of conditions but through faith. 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 7, 11-15 The young man who carried Jonathan’s armour agreed to Jonathan’s plan of crossing over enemy lines without hesitation. This is the attitude that God and Samuel had desired from Saul. The situation of the battle was completely reversed through these two men who were united in strength and heart. God’s Kingdom grows stronger when leaders and followers listen to each other and work together with trust in God.

Lord, help me not to despair over my own smallness and weaknesses but to follow you by relying on your greatness and power.
