아브넬을 책망하는 다윗 

13이에 다윗이 건너편으로 가서 멀리 산 꼭대기에 서니 거리가 멀더라 14다윗이 백성과 넬의 아들 아브넬을 대하여 외쳐 이르되 아브넬아 너는 대답하지 아니하느냐 하니 아브넬이 대답하여 이르되 왕을 부르는 너는 누구냐 하더라 15다윗이 아브넬에게 이르되 네가 용사가 아니냐 이스라엘 가운데에 너 같은 자가 누구냐 그러한데 네가 어찌하여 네 주 왕을 보호하지 아니하느냐 백성 가운데 한 사람이 네 주 왕을 죽이려고 들어갔었느니라 16네가 행한 이 일이 옳지 못하도다 여호와께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 여호와의 기름 부음 받은 너희 주를 보호하지 아니하였으니 너희는 마땅히 죽을 자이니라 이제 왕의 창과 왕의 머리 곁에 있던 물병이 어디 있나 보라 하니

 사울에게 결백을 호소하는 다윗 

 17사울이 다윗의 음성을 알아 듣고 이르되 내 아들 다윗아 이것이 네 음성이냐 하는지라 다윗이 이르되 내 주 왕이여 내 음성이니이다 하고 18또 이르되 내 주는 어찌하여 주의 종을 쫓으시나이까 내가 무엇을 하였으며 내 손에 무슨 악이 있나이까 19원하건대 내 주 왕은 이제 종의 말을 들으소서 만일 왕을 충동시켜 나를 해하려 하는 이가 여호와시면 여호와께서는 제물을 받으시기를 원하나이다마는 만일 사람들이면 그들이 여호와 앞에 저주를 받으리니 이는 그들이 이르기를 너는 가서 다른 신들을 섬기라 하고 오늘 나를 쫓아내어 여호와의 기업에 참여하지 못하게 함이니이다 20그런즉 청하건대 여호와 앞에서 먼 이 곳에서 이제 나의 피가 땅에 흐르지 말게 하옵소서 이는 산에서 메추라기를 사냥하는 자와 같이 이스라엘 왕이 한 벼룩을 수색하러 나오셨음이니이다

 잘못을 시인하고 다윗을 축복하는 사울 

 21사울이 이르되 내가 범죄하였도다 내 아들 다윗아 돌아오라 네가 오늘 내 생명을 귀하게 여겼은즉 내가 다시는 너를 해하려 하지 아니하리라 내가 어리석은 일을 하였으니 대단히 잘못되었도다 하는지라 22다윗이 대답하여 이르되 왕은 창을 보소서 한 소년을 보내어 가져가게 하소서 23여호와께서 사람에게 그의 공의와 신실을 따라 갚으시리니 이는 여호와께서 오늘 왕을 내 손에 넘기셨으되 나는 손을 들어 여호와의 기름 부음을 받은 자 치기를 원하지 아니하였음이니이다 24오늘 왕의 생명을 내가 중히 여긴 것 같이 내 생명을 여호와께서 중히 여기셔서 모든 환난에서 나를 구하여 내시기를 바라나이다 하니라 25사울이 다윗에게 이르되 내 아들 다윗아 네게 복이 있을지로다 네가 큰 일을 행하겠고 반드시 승리를 얻으리라 하니라 다윗은 자기 길로 가고 사울은 자기 곳으로 돌아가니라

13Then David went over to the other side and stood far off on the top of the hill, with a great space between them.14 And David called to the army, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, “Will you not answer, Abner?” Then Abner answered, “Who are you who calls to the king?”15 And David said to Abner, “Are you not a man? Who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not kept watch over your lord the king? For one of the people came in to destroy the king your lord.16 This thing that you have done is not good. As the LORD lives, you deserve to die, because you have not kept watch over your lord, the LORD’s anointed. And now see where the king’s spear is and the jar of water that was at his head.”17 Saul recognized David’s voice and said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” And David said, “It is my voice, my lord, O king.”18 And he said, “Why does my lord pursue after his servant? For what have I done? What evil is on my hands?19 Now therefore let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is the LORD who has stirred you up against me, may he accept an offering, but if it is men, may they be cursed before the LORD, for they have driven me out this day that I should have no share in the heritage of the LORD, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’20 Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth away from the presence of the LORD, for the king of Israel has come out to seek a single flea like one who hunts a partridge in the mountains.”21 Then Saul said, “I have sinned. Return, my son David, for I will no more do you harm, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Behold, I have acted foolishly, and have made a great mistake.”22 And David answered and said, “Here is the spear, O king! Let one of the young men come over and take it.23 The LORD rewards every man for his righteousness and his faithfulness, for the LORD gave you into my hand today, and I would not put out my hand against the LORD’s anointed.24 Behold, as your life was precious this day in my sight, so may my life be precious in the sight of the LORD, and may he deliver me out of all tribulation.”25 Then Saul said to David, “Blessed be you, my son David! You will do many things and will succeed in them.” So David went his way, and Saul returned to his place. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

David went up to the camp on the mountain opposite Saul. There, he rebuked Abner for failing to protect the king and demanded that he be held accountable. Then he made an appeal to Saul proclaiming his innocence and grievances (vv. 13-20). Upon hearing about David’s deed and the sincerity of his words, Saul acknowledged his foolishness and wrongdoings. David had confidence that God would reward his ‘righteousness’ and ‘faithfulness’ with good and Saul blessed David and wished for David to succeed (vv. 21-25).  

Who is God?

Vv. 23-24 God repays righteousness and faithfulness accordingly. Just as David respected Saul’s life, God regarded David’s life as precious and protected him. The more dangerous and difficult the situation, the more we must strive to carry out acts of righteousness and faithfulness. God will reward us. 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 21, 25 Saul acknowledged his wrongdoings and blessed David. However, his change of heart does not seem sincere (see 19:6; 24:17; v.18). Let’s stop repeatedly sinning and repenting. What sin are you constantly repeating and needs to firmly cut off?

Lord, help me to boldly cut myself off from the things that are not pleasing to you.
