[ Hebrews 7:11 - 7:19 ]
11Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron?12 For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well.13 For the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar.14 For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.15 This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek,16 who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life.17 For it is witnessed of him, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”18 For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness19 (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.
Who is God like?
Thinking & Understanding
The writer of Hebrews points out the limitations of Levite priests who could not make people perfect and proves that Jesus, a greater high priest of a different genealogy, needed to come. Jesus became an eternal priest through the power of resurrection, the power of life that cannot decay, rather than the law which, based on the premise of death, ordained priests to be chosen according to their bloodline. The powerless and futile law which could not accomplish salvation was abolished along with the Aaronic priesthood, and in its place, God granted to us through Jesus the ‘better hope’ of being perfectly redeemed so that we could go before God (vv. 11-19).
What lesson is God teaching me?
Vv. 12, 18-19 We must be able to discern temporary things from eternal things. The law and ritual regulations were temporary measures that were needed only until Jesus came. Attempting to return to the Jewish faith despite this is foolish. Are you clinging onto temporary and unessential things while neglecting the things that are eternal and essential? Let’s seek the wisdom to discern real things from their shadows.
V. 19 The law and ritual regulations were not perfect, but through Jesus, God completed the path for us to go before him. Receiving complete forgiveness for our sins and restoring an intimate relationship with God is our hope and salvation. Are you enjoying and hoping in this privilege that we can only gain through Jesus?
Prayer
Father God, thank you for giving us a ‘better hope’ through Jesus.
