바울은 자신을 포함한 유대인들(‘우리’)이 받은 구원을 이제 이방인들(‘너희’)에게도 적용합니다. 이번에도 그들의 비극적인 과거를 먼저 말하고 나서 복된 현재를 이야기합니다.

그때는(그리스도 밖에) 

11그러므로 생각하라 너희는 그 때에 육체로는 이방인이요 손으로 육체에 행한 할례를 받은 무리라 칭하는 자들로부터 할례를 받지 않은 무리라 칭함을 받는 자들이라 12그 때에 너희는 그리스도 밖에 있었고 이스라엘 나라 밖의 사람이라 약속의 언약들에 대하여는 외인이요 세상에서 소망이 없고 하나님도 없는 자이더니 13이제는 전에 멀리 있던 너희가 그리스도 예수 안에서 그리스도의 피로 가까워졌느니라

 그리스도의 사역 

 14그는 우리의 화평이신지라 둘로 하나를 만드사 원수 된 것 곧 중간에 막힌 담을 자기 육체로 허시고 15법조문으로 된 계명의 율법을 폐하셨으니 이는 이 둘로 자기 안에서 한 새 사람을 지어 화평하게 하시고 16또 십자가로 이 둘을 한 몸으로 하나님과 화목하게 하려 하심이라 원수 된 것을 십자가로 소멸하시고 17또 오셔서 먼 데 있는 너희에게 평안을 전하시고 가까운 데 있는 자들에게 평안을 전하셨으니 18이는 그로 말미암아 우리 둘이 한 성령 안에서 아버지께 나아감을 얻게 하려 하심이라

 이제는(그리스도 안에) 

 19그러므로 이제부터 너희는 외인도 아니요 나그네도 아니요 오직 성도들과 동일한 시민이요 하나님의 권속이라 20너희는 사도들과 선지자들의 터 위에 세우심을 입은 자라 그리스도 예수께서 친히 모퉁잇돌이 되셨느니라 21그의 안에서 건물마다 서로 연결하여 주 안에서 성전이 되어 가고 22너희도 성령 안에서 하나님이 거하실 처소가 되기 위하여 그리스도 예수 안에서 함께 지어져 가느니라

11Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands—12remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility15 by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace,16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.17 And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near.18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Through the cross of Christ, God abolished the dividing wall between Jews and Gentiles. This was the Jewish law. Circumcision was the standard for excluding Gentiles from God’s promise. However, now, that firm wall has been destroyed. This long-standing wall of hostility and division was abolished by the love and sacrifice of the cross and peace has been established (vv. 12-17). Now, the whole world, as members of God’s household and citizens of God’s kingdom, is growing together into one holy temple on the foundation of the cornerstone of Christ (vv. 18-22). 

Who is Jesus?

Vv. 13-17 Jesus established peace by abolishing the wall of division through his physical sacrifice. The cross of Christ is a symbol of the righteous love and sacrifice of Jesus, through which peace, reconciliation and unity were established. What conflicts, enmity and discrimination can you see in your surroundings? What is the cross that you must bear for the sake of reconciliation and harmony? 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 18-19 The whole world is God’s family in Christ. No worldly standard can be used as an excuse to exclude people from becoming members of God’s household. Who are the weak members of our society who are discriminated against, alienated and excluded? Are our churches regarding them as members of God’s household and serving them well?

God of Peace, help our churches to be filled with unity and harmony so that they may become holy places that are fit for you to dwell in.
