다니엘은 그를 시기하는 음모자들이 꾸민 계략 때문에 죽게 될 위험에 처했습니다. 그 사실을 알면서도 전에 하던 대로 하나님께 기도합니다.

[ 다니엘 6:1 - 6:15 ] (찬송336장)

다니엘의 훌륭함과 그를 향한 음모 

1다리오가 자기의 뜻대로 고관 백이십 명을 세워 전국을 통치하게 하고 2또 그들 위에 총리 셋을 두었으니 다니엘이 그 중의 하나이라 이는 고관들로 총리에게 자기의 직무를 보고하게 하여 왕에게 손해가 없게 하려 함이었더라 3다니엘은 마음이 민첩하여 총리들과 고관들 위에 뛰어나므로 왕이 그를 세워 전국을 다스리게 하고자 한지라 4이에 총리들과 고관들이 국사에 대하여 다니엘을 고발할 근거를 찾고자 하였으나 아무 근거, 아무 허물도 찾지 못하였으니 이는 그가 충성되어 아무 그릇됨도 없고 아무 허물도 없음이었더라 5그들이 이르되 이 다니엘은 그 하나님의 율법에서 근거를 찾지 못하면 그를 고발할 수 없으리라 하고

 기도 금지법이 제정됨 

 6이에 총리들과 고관들이 모여 왕에게 나아가서 그에게 말하되 다리오 왕이여 만수무강 하옵소서 7나라의 모든 총리와 지사와 총독과 법관과 관원이 의논하고 왕에게 한 법률을 세우며 한 금령을 정하실 것을 구하나이다 왕이여 그것은 곧 이제부터 삼십일 동안에 누구든지 왕 외의 어떤 신에게나 사람에게 무엇을 구하면 사자 굴에 던져 넣기로 한 것이니이다 8그런즉 왕이여 원하건대 금령을 세우시고 그 조서에 왕의 도장을 찍어 메대와 바사의 고치지 아니하는 규례를 따라 그것을 다시 고치지 못하게 하옵소서 하매 9이에 다리오 왕이 조서에 왕의 도장을 찍어 금령을 내니라

 10다니엘이 이 조서에 왕의 도장이 찍힌 것을 알고도 자기 집에 돌아가서는 윗방에 올라가 예루살렘으로 향한 창문을 열고 전에 하던 대로 하루 세 번씩 무릎을 꿇고 기도하며 그의 하나님께 감사하였더라

 음모자들이 다니엘을 고발함 

 11그 무리들이 모여서 다니엘이 자기 하나님 앞에 기도하며 간구하는 것을 발견하고 12이에 그들이 나아가서 왕의 금령에 관하여 왕께 아뢰되 왕이여 왕이 이미 금령에 왕의 도장을 찍어서 이제부터 삼십 일 동안에는 누구든지 왕 외의 어떤 신에게나 사람에게 구하면 사자 굴에 던져 넣기로 하지 아니하였나이까 하니 왕이 대답하여 이르되 이 일이 확실하니 메대와 바사의 고치지 못하는 규례니라 하는지라 13그들이 왕 앞에서 말하여 이르되 왕이여 사로잡혀 온 유다 자손 중에 다니엘이 왕과 왕의 도장이 찍힌 금령을 존중하지 아니하고 하루 세 번씩 기도하나이다 하니 14왕이 이 말을 듣고 그로 말미암아 심히 근심하여 다니엘을 구원하려고 마음을 쓰며 그를 건져내려고 힘을 다하다가 해가 질 때에 이르렀더라 15그 무리들이 또 모여 왕에게로 나아와서 왕께 말하되 왕이여 메대와 바사의 규례를 아시거니와 왕께서 세우신 금령과 법도는 고치지 못할 것이니이다 하니

3절) ‘마음이 민첩하다’로 번역된 부분은 문자적으로 ‘영이 탁월하다’라는 뜻으로, 하나님에게서 기원한 다니엘의 비범한 영적 능력이 강조된 표현이다(4:8,9; 5:12).

[ Daniel 6:1 - 6:15 ]

1It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom120 satraps, to be throughout the whole kingdom;2 and over them three high officials, of whom Daniel was one, to whom these satraps should give account, so that the king might suffer no loss.3 Then this Daniel became distinguished above all the other high officials and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him. And the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.4 Then the high officials and the satraps sought to find a ground for complaint against Daniel with regard to the kingdom, but they could find no ground for complaint or any fault, because he was faithful, and no error or fault was found in him.5 Then these men said, “We shall not find any ground for complaint against this Daniel unless we find it in connection with the law of his God.”6 Then these high officials and satraps came by agreement to the king and said to him, “O King Darius, live forever!7 All the high officials of the kingdom, the prefects and the satraps, the counselors and the governors are agreed that the king should establish an ordinance and enforce an injunction, that whoever makes petition to any god or man for thirty days, except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions.8 Now, O king, establish the injunction and sign the document, so that it cannot be changed, according to the law of the Medes and the Persians, which cannot be revoked.”9 Therefore King Darius signed the document and injunction.10 When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously.11 Then these men came by agreement and found Daniel making petition and plea before his God.12 Then they came near and said before the king, concerning the injunction, “O king! Did you not sign an injunction, that anyone who makes petition to any god or man within thirty days except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions?” The king answered and said, “The thing stands fast, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be revoked.”13 Then they answered and said before the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, O king, or the injunction you have signed, but makes his petition three times a day.”14 Then the king, when he heard these words, was much distressed and set his mind to deliver Daniel. And he labored till the sun went down to rescue him.15 Then these men came by agreement to the king and said to the king, “Know, O king, that it is a law of the Medes and Persians that no injunction or ordinance that the king establishes can be changed.” 

Who is God like?

Darius appointed 120 local governors, indicating that his kingdom was considerably large. Meanwhile, Daniel, who was upright before God, continued to be acknowledged for his faithfulness and intelligence. Those who envied him tried to find a flaw in him, but their efforts were in vain (vv. 1-5). Eventually, they managed to trap Daniel by charging him with praying. Although Darius knew that Daniel was faithful, his hands were tied as an executor of the law (vv. 6-15). 

Who is God?

Vv. 1-4 God has established an order and appointed authorities even outside the church to control evil. God reveals his righteousness and power even more clearly through his faithful believers. We must always believe with conviction that God is the ruler of all things.  

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 10-15 Prayer is the greatest weapon that those who believe in God’s rulership can possess. Daniel’s spiritual habit of prayer was more powerful than the threat against his life. He was not shaken but continued to kneel down and pray steadfastly. Like Daniel, let’s make the works of the Holy Spirit become like second nature to us.

Lord, help me not to stop praying even in the face of various demands that obstruct prayer.
