인생에겐 젊음이 있고 내일이 있습니다. 하지만 그것이 항상 낙관적인 것만은 아닙니다. 모든 미래는 인생 자체가 아닌 하나님에게 달려 있습니다.  

[ 전도서 11:1 - 11:10 ] (찬송586장)

미래의 불확실성 

1너는 네 떡을 물 위에 던져라 여러 날 후에 도로 찾으리라 2일곱에게나 여덟에게 나눠 줄지어다 무슨 재앙이 땅에 임할는지 네가 알지 못함이니라

 세상의 불확실성 

 3구름에 비가 가득하면 땅에 쏟아지며 나무가 남으로나 북으로나 쓰러지면 그 쓰러진 곳에 그냥 있으리라 4풍세를 살펴보는 자는 파종하지 못할 것이요 구름만 바라보는 자는 거두지 못하리라 5바람의 길이 어떠함과 아이 밴 자의 태에서 뼈가 어떻게 자라는지를 네가 알지 못함 같이 만사를 성취하시는 하나님의 일을 네가 알지 못하느니라 6너는 아침에 씨를 뿌리고 저녁에도 손을 놓지 말라 이것이 잘 될는지, 저것이 잘 될는지, 혹 둘이 다 잘 될는지 알지 못함이니라

 삶의 불확실성 

 7빛은 실로 아름다운 것이라 눈으로 해를 보는 것이 즐거운 일이로다 8사람이 여러 해를 살면 항상 즐거워할지로다 그러나 캄캄한 날들이 많으리니 그 날들을 생각할지로다 다가올 일은 다 헛되도다

 젊음의 불확실성 

 9청년이여 네 어린 때를 즐거워하며 네 청년의 날들을 마음에 기뻐하여 마음에 원하는 길들과 네 눈이 보는 대로 행하라 그러나 하나님이 이 모든 일로 말미암아 너를 심판하실 줄 알라 10그런즉 근심이 네 마음에서 떠나게 하며 악이 네 몸에서 물러가게 하라 어릴 때와 검은 머리의 시절이 다 헛되니라

[ Ecclesiastes 11:1 - 11:10 ]

1Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days.2 Give a portion to seven, or even to eight, for you know not what disaster may happen on earth.3 If the clouds are full of rain, they empty themselves on the earth, and if a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where the tree falls, there it will lie.4 He who observes the wind will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap.5 As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.6 In the morning sow your seed, and at evening withhold not your hand, for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good.7 Light is sweet, and it is pleasant for the eyes to see the sun.8 So if a person lives many years, let him rejoice in them all; but let him remember that the days of darkness will be many. All that comes is vanity.9 Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. Walk in the ways of your heart and the sight of your eyes. But know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.10 Remove vexation from your heart, and put away pain from your body, for youth and the dawn of life are vanity. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

It’s foolish not to do anything at all just because we cannot predict the events of this world or the results of an event or action. The preacher advised that living wisely meant doing our utmost and entrusting the result to the providence of God. We all live hoping for good days, but we need to remember that there will also be many bad days (vv. 1-8). The preacher urged that we should enjoy our youth. However, he also warned that we mustn’t forget that our lives will be followed by judgement. This means that while it’s good to enjoy our youth to the fullest, we mustn’t overstep boundaries and overindulge (vv. 9-10). 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 1-6 Those who trust in God’s providence do not fear risks. God does not desire our talents to go to waste. If we fear ‘what might be lost’, nothing will happen. Let’s work faithfully and wait with hopefulness in the possible fruits. 

Vv. 7-10 Let’s not waste our youth but enjoy it to the fullest. Let’s stop overindulging in pleasure or worrying excessively about the future and live experiencing happiness to the fullest under God’s good providence. In what ways could you start living a brighter and more ‘youthful’ life?

Lord, give me the strength and courage to live as a faithful Christian in this immoral world.
