14여호와께서 시내 광야에서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 15레위 자손을 그들의 조상의 가문과 종족을 따라 계수하되 일 개월 이상된 남자를 다 계수하라 16모세가 여호와의 말씀을 따라 그 명령하신 대로 계수하니라 17레위의 아들들의 이름은 이러하니 게르손과 고핫과 므라리요 18게르손의 아들들의 이름은 그들의 종족대로 이러하니 립니와 시므이요 19고핫의 아들들은 그들의 종족대로 이러하니 아므람과 이스할과 헤브론과 웃시엘이요 20므라리의 아들들은 그들의 종족대로 말리와 무시이니 이는 그의 종족대로 된 레위인의 조상의 가문들이니라

 21게르손에게서는 립니 종족과 시므이 종족이 났으니 이들이 곧 게르손의 조상의 가문들이라 22계수된 자 곧 일 개월 이상 된 남자의 수효 합계는 칠천오백 명이며 23게르손 종족들은 성막 뒤 곧 서쪽에 진을 칠 것이요 24라엘의 아들 엘리아삽은 게르손 사람의 조상의 가문의 지휘관이 될 것이며 25게르손 자손이 회막에서 맡을 일은 성막과 장막과 그 덮개와 회막 휘장 문과 26뜰의 휘장과 및 성막과 제단 사방에 있는 뜰의 휘장 문과 그 모든 것에 쓰는 줄들이니라

 27고핫에게서는 아므람 종족과 이스할 종족과 헤브론 종족과 웃시엘 종족이 났으니 이들은 곧 고핫 종족들이라 28계수된 자로서 출생 후 일 개월 이상 된 남자는 모두 팔천육백 명인데 성소를 맡을 것이며 29고핫 자손의 종족들은 성막 남쪽에 진을 칠 것이요 30웃시엘의 아들 엘리사반은 고핫 사람의 종족과 조상의 가문의 지휘관이 될 것이며 31그들이 맡을 것은 증거궤와 상과 등잔대와 제단들과 성소에서 봉사하는 데 쓰는 기구들과 휘장과 그것에 쓰는 모든 것이며 32제사장 아론의 아들 엘르아살은 레위인의 지휘관들의 어른이 되고 또 성소를 맡을 자를 통할할 것이니라

 33므라리에게서는 말리 종족과 무시 종족이 났으니 이들은 곧 므라리 종족들이라 34그 계수된 자 곧 일 개월 이상 된 남자는 모두 육천이백 명이며 35아비하일의 아들 수리엘은 므라리 종족과 조상의 가문의 지휘관이 될 것이요 이 종족은 성막 북쪽에 진을 칠 것이며 36므라리 자손이 맡을 것은 성막의 널판과 그 띠와 그 기둥과 그 받침과 그 모든 기구와 그것에 쓰는 모든 것이며 37뜰 사방 기둥과 그 받침과 그 말뚝과 그 줄들이니라

 38성막 앞 동쪽 곧 회막 앞 해 돋는 쪽에는 모세와 아론과 아론의 아들들이 진을 치고 이스라엘 자손의 직무를 위하여 성소의 직무를 수행할 것이며 외인이 가까이 하면 죽일지니라

 39모세와 아론이 여호와의 명령을 따라 레위인을 각 종족대로 계수한즉 일 개월 이상 된 남자는 모두 이만 이천 명이었더라

28절) 고핫 자손의 수가 8,600명으로 되어 있는데, 다수의 학자가 이는 필사자의 실수이며 고핫 자손의 정확한 숫자는 8,300명이라고 생각한다. 그래야 39절에 나온 대로 레위 지파의 생후 1개월 이상 된 남자의 총합이 22,000명이 된다.

14And the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying,15 “List the sons of Levi, by fathers’ houses and by clans; every male from a month old and upward you shall list.”16 So Moses listed them according to the word of the LORD, as he was commanded.17 And these were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon and Kohath and Merari.18 And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their clans: Libni and Shimei.19 And the sons of Kohath by their clans: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.20 And the sons of Merari by their clans: Mahli and Mushi. These are the clans of the Levites, by their fathers’ houses.21 To Gershon belonged the clan of the Libnites and the clan of the Shimeites; these were the clans of the Gershonites.22 Their listing according to the number of all the males from a month old and upward was7,500.23 The clans of the Gershonites were to camp behind the tabernacle on the west,24 with Eliasaph, the son of Lael as chief of the fathers’ house of the Gershonites.25 And the guard duty of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting involved the tabernacle, the tent with its covering, the screen for the entrance of the tent of meeting,26 the hangings of the court, the screen for the door of the court that is around the tabernacle and the altar, and its cords—all the service connected with these.27 To Kohath belonged the clan of the Amramites and the clan of the Izharites and the clan of the Hebronites and the clan of the Uzzielites; these are the clans of the Kohathites.28 According to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, there were8,600, keeping guard over the sanctuary.29 The clans of the sons of Kohath were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle,30 with Elizaphan the son of Uzziel as chief of the fathers’ house of the clans of the Kohathites.31 And their guard duty involved the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the vessels of the sanctuary with which the priests minister, and the screen; all the service connected with these.32 And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest was to be chief over the chiefs of the Levites, and to have oversight of those who kept guard over the sanctuary.33 To Merari belonged the clan of the Mahlites and the clan of the Mushites: these are the clans of Merari.34 Their listing according to the number of all the males from a month old and upward was6,200.35 And the chief of the fathers’ house of the clans of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail. They were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle.36 And the appointed guard duty of the sons of Merari involved the frames of the tabernacle, the bars, the pillars, the bases, and all their accessories; all the service connected with these;37 also the pillars around the court, with their bases and pegs and cords.38 Those who were to camp before the tabernacle on the east, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrise, were Moses and Aaron and his sons, guarding the sanctuary itself, to protect the people of Israel. And any outsider who came near was to be put to death.39 All those listed among the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron listed at the commandment of the LORD, by clans, all the males from a month old and upward, were22,000. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

God ordered a census of all the male descendants of Levi above one month old by clan and decided their duties (vv. 14-20). All the clans were assigned with duties relating to the maintenance of the tent of meeting. The Gershonites were entrusted with maintaining the coverings and cords, the Kohathites with maintaining the vessels used for the offerings and helping with ritual proceedings, and the Mahlites with maintaining the frames, pillars and bases of the tent of meeting. They camped in the west, south and north of the tent of meeting while Moses, Aaron and Aaron’s sons camped in the east (vv. 21-38). 

Who is God?

V. 14-39 God commanded the Levites to carry out very specific duties. These duties were simple but specialised, ordinary but holy. Neglecting even the smallest tasks could cause everything to come to a stop. The small responsibilities that we have been entrusted with are also the most important. Let’s faithfully carry out even our smallest duties. 

What lesson is God teaching me?

V. 38 The priests and Levites shared the duty of guarding the sanctuary so that outsiders could not trespass. Protecting the holiness of the church can be a harder and more urgent task than that of trying to change the world. What can we and must we do to protect ourselves and the church so that we do not succumb to worldliness and deceit?

Lord, I will faithfully carry out the tasks that you have entrusted to me, no matter how small and insignificant they may seem.
