[ 민수기 8:1 - 8:26 ] (찬송447장)

1여호와께서 또 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 2아론에게 말하여 이르라 등불을 켤 때에는 일곱 등잔을 등잔대 앞으로 비추게 할지니라 하시매 3아론이 그리하여 등불을 등잔대 앞으로 비추도록 켰으니 여호와께서 모세에게 명령하심과 같았더라 4이 등잔대의 제작법은 이러하니 곧 금을 쳐서 만든 것인데 밑판에서 그 꽃까지 쳐서 만든 것이라 모세가 여호와께서 자기에게 보이신 양식을 따라 이 등잔대를 만들었더라

 5여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 6이스라엘 자손 중에서 레위인을 데려다가 정결하게 하라 7너는 이같이 하여 그들을 정결하게 하되 곧 속죄의 물을 그들에게 뿌리고 그들에게 그들의 전신을 삭도로 밀게 하고 그 의복을 빨게 하여 몸을 정결하게 하고 8또 그들에게 수송아지 한 마리를 번제물로, 기름 섞은 고운 가루를 그 소제물로 가져오게 하고 그 외에 너는 또 수송아지 한 마리를 속죄제물로 가져오고 9레위인을 회막 앞에 나오게 하고 이스라엘 자손의 온 회중을 모으고 10레위인을 여호와 앞에 나오게 하고 이스라엘 자손이 그들에게 안수하게 한 후에 11아론이 이스라엘 자손을 위하여 레위인을 흔들어 바치는 제물로 여호와 앞에 드릴지니 이는 그들에게 여호와께 봉사하게 하기 위함이라 12레위인으로 수송아지들의 머리에 안수하게 하고 네가 그 하나는 속죄제물로, 하나는 번제물로 여호와께 드려 레위인을 속죄하고 13레위인을 아론과 그의 아들들 앞에 세워 여호와께 요제로 드릴지니라

 14너는 이같이 이스라엘 자손 중에서 레위인을 구별하라 그리하면 그들이 내게 속할 것이라 15네가 그들을 정결하게 하여 요제로 드린 후에 그들이 회막에 들어가서 봉사할 것이니라 16그들은 이스라엘 자손 중에서 내게 온전히 드린 바 된 자라 이스라엘 자손 중 모든 초태생 곧 모든 처음 태어난 자 대신 내가 그들을 취하였나니 17이스라엘 자손 중에 처음 태어난 것은 사람이든지 짐승이든지 다 내게 속하였음은 내가 애굽 땅에서 모든 처음 태어난 자를 치던 날에 그들을 내게 구별하였음이라 18이러므로 내가 이스라엘 자손 중 모든 처음 태어난 자 대신 레위인을 취하였느니라 19내가 이스라엘 자손 중에서 레위인을 취하여 그들을 아론과 그의 아들들에게 주어 그들로 회막에서 이스라엘 자손을 대신하여 봉사하게 하며 또 이스라엘 자손을 위하여 속죄하게 하였나니 이는 이스라엘 자손이 성소에 가까이 할 때에 그들 중에 재앙이 없게 하려 하였음이니라

 20모세와 아론과 이스라엘 자손의 온 회중이 여호와께서 레위인에 대하여 모세에게 명령하신 것을 다 따라 레위인에게 행하였으되 곧 이스라엘 자손이 그와 같이 그들에게 행하였더라 21레위인이 이에 죄에서 스스로 깨끗하게 하고 그들의 옷을 빨매 아론이 그들을 여호와 앞에 요제로 드리고 그가 또 그들을 위하여 속죄하여 정결하게 한 22후에 레위인이 회막에 들어가서 아론과 그의 아들들 앞에서 봉사하니라 여호와께서 레위인의 일에 대하여 모세에게 명령하게 하신 것을 따라 그와 같이 그들에게 행하였더라

 23여호와께서 또 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 24레위인은 이같이 할지니 곧 이십오 세 이상으로는 회막에 들어가서 복무하고 봉사할 것이요 25오십 세부터는 그 일을 쉬어 봉사하지 아니할 것이나 26그의 형제와 함께 회막에서 돕는 직무를 지킬 것이요 일하지 아니할 것이라 너는 레위인의 직무에 대하여 이같이 할지니라

[ Numbers 8:1 - 8:26 ]

1Now the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,2 “Speak to Aaron and say to him, When you set up the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the lampstand.”3 And Aaron did so: he set up its lamps in front of the lampstand, as the LORD commanded Moses.4 And this was the workmanship of the lampstand, hammered work of gold. From its base to its flowers, it was hammered work; according to the pattern that the LORD had shown Moses, so he made the lampstand.5 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,6 “Take the Levites from among the people of Israel and cleanse them.7 Thus you shall do to them to cleanse them: sprinkle the water of purification upon them, and let them go with a razor over all their body, and wash their clothes and cleanse themselves.8 Then let them take a bull from the herd and its grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil, and you shall take another bull from the herd for a sin offering.9 And you shall bring the Levites before the tent of meeting and assemble the whole congregation of the people of Israel.10 When you bring the Levites before the LORD, the people of Israel shall lay their hands on the Levites,11 and Aaron shall offer the Levites before the LORD as a wave offering from the people of Israel, that they may do the service of the LORD.12 Then the Levites shall lay their hands on the heads of the bulls, and you shall offer the one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering to the LORD to make atonement for the Levites.13 And you shall set the Levites before Aaron and his sons, and shall offer them as a wave offering to the LORD.14 “Thus you shall separate the Levites from among the people of Israel, and the Levites shall be mine.15 And after that the Levites shall go in to serve at the tent of meeting, when you have cleansed them and offered them as a wave offering.16 For they are wholly given to me from among the people of Israel. Instead of all who open the womb, the firstborn of all the people of Israel, I have taken them for myself.17 For all the firstborn among the people of Israel are mine, both of man and of beast. On the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I consecrated them for myself,18 and I have taken the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the people of Israel.19 And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and his sons from among the people of Israel, to do the service for the people of Israel at the tent of meeting and to make atonement for the people of Israel, that there may be no plague among the people of Israel when the people of Israel come near the sanctuary.”20 Thus did Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the people of Israel to the Levites. According to all that the LORD commanded Moses concerning the Levites, the people of Israel did to them.21 And the Levites purified themselves from sin and washed their clothes, and Aaron offered them as a wave offering before the LORD, and Aaron made atonement for them to cleanse them.22 And after that the Levites went in to do their service in the tent of meeting before Aaron and his sons; as the LORD had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did to them.23 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,24 “This applies to the Levites: from twenty-five years old and upward they shall come to do duty in the service of the tent of meeting.25 And from the age of fifty years they shall withdraw from the duty of the service and serve no more.26 They minister to their brothers in the tent of meeting by keeping guard, but they shall do no service. Thus shall you do to the Levites in assigning their duties.” 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

The fire in the lamps symbolised God’s presence. The lamps needed to be set up in front of the lampstand to shine a light on the table for the bread (vv. 1-4). The Levites were distinguished from the rest of the Israelites to live like the lamps in the sanctuary. God commanded the Levites to go through a cleansing ritual. This was because they needed to become holy first in order to make others holy. The various duties in the tent of meeting required strength and wisdom. So, they were handled by the younger Levites. Retired Levites could help by offering their counsel but could not directly handle any work (vv. 5-26). 

Who is God?

Vv. 1-4 God shines a light on his people and turns his face towards them. He sees them not through the eyes of a watchful superior but through the eyes of a nurturing parent. God, who lit up the sanctuary with small lamps, sent Christ to shine a light brightly on the whole world. Now, anywhere touched by the light of Christ is a holy place. 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 1-26 The Levites were the living lamps of God. Likewise, Christians today are lamps that shine the light of Christ on the world. In order for us to properly fulfil this role, we need to become not stronger but purer, and we need to be clearly distinguished from the world rather than being overshadowed by it.

Lord, help me to guide others towards you by keeping the purity of my mind and body.
