16여호야다가 자기와 모든 백성과 왕 사이에 언약을 세워 여호와의 백성이 되리라 한지라

17온 국민이 바알의 신당으로 가서 그 신당을 부수고 그의 제단들과 형상들을 깨뜨리고 그 제단 앞에서 바알의 제사장 맛단을 죽이니라

18여호야다가 여호와의 전의 직원들을 세워 레위 제사장의 수하에 맡기니 이들은 다윗이 전에 그들의 반열을 나누어서 여호와의 전에서 모세의 율법에 기록한 대로 여호와께 번제를 드리며 다윗이 정한 규례대로 즐거이 부르고 노래하게 하였던 자들이더라

19또 문지기를 여호와의 전 여러 문에 두어 무슨 일에든지 부정한 모든 자는 들어오지 못하게 하고

20백부장들과 존귀한 자들과 백성의 방백들과 그 땅의 모든 백성을 거느리고 왕을 인도하여 여호와의 전에서 내려와 윗문으로부터 왕궁에 이르러 왕을 나라 보좌에 앉히매

21그 땅의 모든 백성이 즐거워하고 성중이 평온하더라 아달랴를 무리가 칼로 죽였었더라

1요아스가 왕위에 오를 때에 나이가 칠 세라 예루살렘에서 사십 년 동안 다스리니라 그의 어머니의 이름은 시비아요 브엘세바 사람이더라

2제사장 여호야다가 세상에 사는 모든 날에 요아스가 여호와 보시기에 정직하게 행하였으며

3여호야다가 그를 두 아내에게 장가들게 하였더니 자녀를 낳았더라

4그 후에 요아스가 여호와의 전을 보수할 뜻을 두고

5제사장들과 레위 사람들을 모으고 그들에게 이르되 너희는 유다 여러 성읍에 가서 모든 이스라엘에게 해마다 너희의 하나님의 전을 수리할 돈을 거두되 그 일을 빨리 하라 하였으나 레위 사람이 빨리 하지 아니한지라

6왕이 대제사장 여호야다를 불러 이르되 네가 어찌하여 레위 사람들을 시켜서 여호와의 종 모세와 이스라엘의 회중이 성막을 위하여 정한 세를 유다와 예루살렘에서 거두게 하지 아니하였느냐 하니

7이는 그 악한 여인 아달랴의 아들들이 하나님의 전을 파괴하고 또 여호와의 전의 모든 성물들을 바알들을 위하여 사용하였음이었더라

8이에 왕이 말하여 한 궤를 만들어 여호와의 전 문 밖에 두게 하고

9유다와 예루살렘에 공포하여 하나님의 종 모세가 광야에서 이스라엘에게 정한 세를 여호와께 드리라 하였더니

10모든 방백들과 백성들이 기뻐하여 마치기까지 돈을 가져다가 궤에 던지니라

11레위 사람들이 언제든지 궤를 메고 왕의 관리에게 가지고 가서 돈이 많은 것을 보이면 왕의 서기관과 대제사장에게 속한 관원이 와서 그 궤를 쏟고 다시 그 곳에 가져다 두었더라 때때로 이렇게 하여 돈을 많이 거두매

12왕과 여호야다가 그 돈을 여호와의 전 감독자에게 주어 석수와 목수를 고용하여 여호와의 전을 보수하며 또 철공과 놋쇠공을 고용하여 여호와의 전을 수리하게 하였더니

13기술자들이 맡아서 수리하는 공사가 점점 진척되므로 하나님의 전을 이전 모양대로 견고하게 하니라

14공사를 마친 후에 그 남은 돈을 왕과 여호야다 앞으로 가져왔으므로 그것으로 여호와의 전에 쓸 그릇을 만들었으니 곧 섬겨 제사 드리는 그릇이며 또 숟가락과 금은 그릇들이라 여호야다가 세상에 사는 모든 날에 여호와의 전에 항상 번제를 드렸더라

15여호야다가 나이가 많고 늙어서 죽으니 죽을 때에 백삼십 세라

16무리가 다윗 성 여러 왕의 묘실 중에 장사하였으니 이는 그가 이스라엘과 하나님과 그의 성전에 대하여 선을 행하였음이더라

여호야다는 유다 전역에서 아달랴가 남겨 놓은 우상을 척결하고 성전 체제를 정비합니다. 요아스는 아달랴가 망가뜨린 성전을 수리합니다.

하나님은 어떤 분입니까?

24:1-3 선하고 의로운 한 사람을 통해 백성 전체를 회복시키십니다. 요아스가 여호야다의 지도를 받아 올바르게 통치하게 하셨으며, 여호야다를 통해 되찾은 평화(23:21) 속에서 요아스가 많은 자녀를 낳게 하셨습니다. 멸절될 뻔한 다윗 가문이(22:10) 여호야다 덕분에 되살아난 것입니다. 나의 돌이킴과 올바른 결정은 나만의 회복과 성장으로 끝나지 않습니다. 하나님의 손에 의해 공동체의 회복으로 이어질 것입니다.

24:15-16 하나님을 존중히 여긴 사람을 존중히 여기십니다(삼상 2:30). 비록 왕이 아니었지만 여호야다는 죽어서 열왕의 묘실에 안장되었습니다. 여호야다가 하나님 보시기에 올바르게 살았음을 하나님이 인정해 주신 것입니다.

내게 주시는 교훈은 무엇입니까?

16-21절 아달랴가 남긴 죄의 흔적을 지우기 위해 해야 할 일이 많습니다. 여호야다는 요아스를 왕위에 즉위시킨 후에 백성을 하나님 백성의 자리로 되돌아가게 합니다. 여호야다 대제사장과 요아스왕, 온 국민이 ‘여호와의 백성’으로 살겠다는 언약을 체결합니다. 이후 아달랴의 통치하에 만연하던 바알 숭배를 척결하고 모세와 다윗이 정한 율법과 규례를 좇아 제사장, 레위인, 문지기를 배치하며, 마비된 예루살렘 성전의 예배를 회복시킵니다. 교회의 개혁과 갱신은 한 번에 완성되지 않습니다. 무너진 것을 세우고 잘못을 고치고 빈 곳을 채우는 수고가 필요합니다.

24:4-14 요아스는 모세가 성막을 위해 반 세겔의 세금을 부과한 것(출 30:12-16)을 근거로, 제사장과 레위 사람들에게 ‘세금을 거두어들여 성전을 보수하라’고 지시했습니다. 그런데 왕이 된 지 23년이 지나도록 성전이 수리되지 않자(왕하 12:6), 요아스가 직접 나서서 성전 문에 궤를 마련하게 하고 백성이 자원해서 직접 궤에 성전세를 내도록 제도를 바꾸었습니다. 그러자 백성과 지도자들이 자발적으로 세금을 냈습니다. 세금은 투명하고 지혜롭게 관리되었습니다. 좋은 의도가 실현되려면 실천적인 지혜가 필요합니다. 선한 뜻을 품었다가 실현되지 않는다고 묻어 두어선 안 됩니다. 그 뜻이 현실이 될 방법을 고민하고 시도해야 합니다.

공동체-하나님 말씀과 언약에 합당한 공동체를 세우기 위해 개혁과 갱신을 이어 가게 하소서.

16And Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and all the people and the king that they should be the LORD's people.17 Then all the people went to the house of Baal and tore it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars.18 And Jehoiada posted watchmen for the house of the LORD under the direction of the Levitical priests and the Levites whom David had organized to be in charge of the house of the LORD, to offer burnt offerings to the LORD, as it is written in the Law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, according to the order of David.19 He stationed the gatekeepers at the gates of the house of the LORD so that no one should enter who was in any way unclean.20 And he took the captains, the nobles, the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the LORD, marching through the upper gate to the king's house. And they set the king on the royal throne.21 So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet after Athaliah had been put to death with the sword.24 :1Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Zibiah of Beersheba.2 And Joash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest.3 Jehoiada got for him two wives, and he had sons and daughters.4 After this Joash decided to restore the house of the LORD.5 And he gathered the priests and the Levites and said to them, “Go out to the cities of Judah and gather from all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that you act quickly.” But the Levites did not act quickly.6 So the king summoned Jehoiada the chief and said to him, “Why have you not required the Levites to bring in from Judah and Jerusalem the tax levied by Moses, the servant of the LORD, and the congregation of Israel for the tent of testimony?”7 For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken into the house of God, and had also used all the dedicated things of the house of the LORD for the Baals.8 So the king commanded, and they made a chest and set it outside the gate of the house of the LORD.9 And proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem to bring in for the LORD the tax that Moses the servant of God laid on Israel in the wilderness.10 And all the princes and all the people rejoiced and brought their tax and dropped it into the chest until they had finished.11 And whenever the chest was brought to the king's officers by the Levites, when they saw that there was much money in it, the king's secretary and the officer of the chief priest would come and empty the chest and take it and return it to its place. Thus they did day after day, and collected money in abundance.12 And the king and Jehoiada gave it to those who had charge of the work of the house of the LORD, and they hired masons and carpenters to restore the house of the LORD, and also workers in iron and bronze to repair the house of the LORD.13 So those who were engaged in the work labored, and the repairing went forward in their hands, and they restored the house of God to its proper condition and strengthened it.14 And when they had finished, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, and with it were made utensils for the house of the LORD, both for the service and for the burnt offerings, and dishes for incense and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the LORD regularly all the days of Jehoiada.15 But Jehoiada grew old and full of days, and died. He was130 years old at his death.16 And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, and toward God and his house.

Although Athaliah was dead, her legacy lingered throughout Judah. After establishing Joash as king, Jehoiada put all his efforts into bringing internal reform to restore godliness to the nation. Under Jehoiada’s guidance, Joash ruled righteously. He had many children, continuing the Davidic line that had come close to being wiped out (23:16-24:3). Joash also led the effort to repair the temple, which had been damaged during Athaliah's reign. Through the people’s dedication, the temple was not only restored but also replenished with precious and sacred utensils (24:4-16).

아달랴는 죽었지만 아달랴의 흔적은 유다 곳곳에 남아 있었습니다. 여호야다는 요아스를 왕으로 옹립함으로 외적인 혁명을 이룬 후, 하나님을 섬기는 나라답게 만드는 내적인 개혁을 추진했습니다. 요아스는 여호야다의 지도를 받으며 하나님 보시기에 올바르게 다스렸고, 많은 자녀를 낳아 끊어질 뻔한 다윗 왕가의 가계를 이어 갔습니다(23:16-24:3). 요아스는 아달랴 때에 파괴된 성전을 수리하는 일에 앞장섰습니다. 백성의 헌신으로 성전이 수리되었을 뿐 아니라 성물까지도 채워졌습니다(24:4-16).

Who is God?

23:16-24:3 Even when it seems like there is no hope, God never ceases to fulfil his will. Even if our current reality feels like walking through a dark tunnel, the time will surely come when we emerge into the light. Let us prepare for that day by turning away from unrighteousness and restoring what is broken within ourselves and our communities. Then, we will not be ashamed when that day comes.

칠흑 같은 어둠에 소망이 없는 것 같아도, 하나님은 쉬지 않고 자신의 뜻을 이루십니다. 지금 우리 현실이 어두운 터널을 지나는 것 같더라도 분명 밝은 빛 가운데 나아올 때가 올 것입니다. 그때 우리 모습이 부끄럽지 않도록 지금 부정한 것을 버리고 무너진 곳을 보수하며, 공동체의 재건을 준비해 나갑시다.

What lesson is God teaching me?

24:8-14 Practical wisdom is necessary for good intentions to be put to action. When Joash's plan to renovate the temple faltered, he examined the cause and adjusted how the funds were collected and used. Do you have good intentions that you have not yet acted on wisely? Keep trying different approaches until you find a way to turn those intentions into a reality that blesses others.

좋은 의도가 실현되려면 실천적인 지혜도 필요합니다. 요아스는 성전을 새로 단장하려는 일이 잘 추진되지 않자, 원인을 살펴서 재정 마련과 집행 방식을 바꿨습니다. 선한 뜻을 품었는데 묻어 두진 않았습니까? 다음 과정은 그 뜻이 현실이 되도록 방법을 고민하고 시도하는 것입니다.
