히브리서 저자는 예수님이 ‘멜기세덱의 반차를 따른 영원한 대제사장’이심을 설명하기 시작합니다. 먼저 멜기세덱이 레위 지파 제사장보다 위대한 제사장임을 논증합니다.

멜기세덱 소개 

1이 멜기세덱은 살렘 왕이요 지극히 높으신 하나님의 제사장이라 여러 왕을 쳐서 죽이고 돌아오는 아브라함을 만나 복을 빈 자라 2아브라함이 모든 것의 십분의 일을 그에게 나누어 주니라 그 이름을 해석하면 먼저는 의의 왕이요 그 다음은 살렘 왕이니 곧 평강의 왕이요 3아버지도 없고 어머니도 없고 족보도 없고 시작한 날도 없고 생명의 끝도 없어 하나님의 아들과 닮아서 항상 제사장으로 있느니라

 아브라함에게 십일조를 받은 멜기세덱 

 4이 사람이 얼마나 높은가를 생각해 보라 조상 아브라함도 노략물 중 십분의 일을 그에게 주었느니라 5레위의 아들들 가운데 제사장의 직분을 받은 자들은 율법을 따라 아브라함의 허리에서 난 자라도 자기 형제인 백성에게서 십분의 일을 취하라는 명령을 받았으나 6레위 족보에 들지 아니한 멜기세덱은 아브라함에게서 십분의 일을 취하고 약속을 받은 그를 위하여 복을 빌었나니

 십일조를 받은 사건의 의미 

 7논란의 여지 없이 낮은 자가 높은 자에게서 축복을 받느니라 8또 여기는 죽을 자들이 십분의 일을 받으나 저기는 산다고 증거를 얻은 자가 받았느니라 9또한 십분의 일을 받는 레위도 아브라함으로 말미암아 십분의 일을 바쳤다고 할 수 있나니 10이는 멜기세덱이 아브라함을 만날 때에 레위는 이미 자기 조상의 허리에 있었음이라

[ Hebrews 7:1 - 7:10 ]

1For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,2 and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace.3 He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.4 See how great this man was to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils!5 And those descendants of Levi who receive the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers, though these also are descended from Abraham.6 But this man who does not have his descent from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.7 It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior.8 In the one case tithes are received by mortal men, but in the other case, by one of whom it is testified that he lives.9 One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham,10 for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

The writer begins to explain evidence that Jesus is ‘the eternal high priest in the order of Melchizedek’. Firstly, Abraham gave offerings of tithes to Melchizedek. The Levite priests became priests based on their genealogy and received tithes according to the law, but Melchizedek transcended both genealogy and the law. Secondly, Melchizedek blessed Abraham, the great-grandfather of Levi. Thirdly, Levite priests were limited by death, but Melchizedek was acknowledged as a priest who lived forever (vv. 1-10). 

Who is God?

Vv. 1-3 God fulfils his plan of salvation for us without even the smallest hitch. Just as God prophesied through Melchizedek, God sent Jesus, the king of peace and righteousness and the eternal high priest, into the world around two thousand years after Melchizedek’s time. God will ensure that the day will come when we are able to enjoy full communion with God in a world of peace and righteousness. 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 2, 4 We need to worship Jesus, our king and high priest. Abraham gave tithes even to Melchizedek, who merely served as a model for Jesus. Therefore, it is only fitting that we serve and love Jesus, the true fulfilment of that model, even more devotedly.

I will worship and serve Jesus, the king of peace and righteousness and our high priest.
