[ 히브리서 12:14 - 12:29 ] (찬송210장)

경고: 주님을 못 뵐까 두려워하라 

14모든 사람과 더불어 화평함과 거룩함을 따르라 이것이 없이는 아무도 주를 보지 못하리라 15너희는 하나님의 은혜에 이르지 못하는 자가 없도록 하고 또 쓴 뿌리가 나서 괴롭게 하여 많은 사람이 이로 말미암아 더럽게 되지 않게 하며 16음행하는 자와 혹 한 그릇 음식을 위하여 장자의 명분을 판 에서와 같이 망령된 자가 없도록 살피라 17너희가 아는 바와 같이 그가 그 후에 축복을 이어받으려고 눈물을 흘리며 구하되 버린 바가 되어 회개할 기회를 얻지 못하였느니라

 첫 언약을 받을 때 시내산의 두려운 광경 

 18너희는 만질 수 있고 불이 붙는 산과 침침함과 흑암과 폭풍과 19나팔 소리와 말하는 소리가 있는 곳에 이른 것이 아니라 그 소리를 듣는 자들은 더 말씀하지 아니하시기를 구하였으니 20이는 짐승이라도 그 산에 들어가면 돌로 침을 당하리라 하신 명령을 그들이 견디지 못함이라 21그 보이는 바가 이렇듯 무섭기로 모세도 이르되 내가 심히 두렵고 떨린다 하였느니라

 새 언약을 받은 시온산의 은혜로운 광경  

 22그러나 너희가 이른 곳은 시온 산과 살아 계신 하나님의 도성인 하늘의 예루살렘과 천만 천사와 23하늘에 기록된 장자들의 모임과 교회와 만민의 심판자이신 하나님과 및 온전하게 된 의인의 영들과 24새 언약의 중보자이신 예수와 및 아벨의 피보다 더 나은 것을 말하는 뿌린 피니라

 하늘로 좇아 경고하신 자를 거역하지 말라 

 25너희는 삼가 말씀하신 이를 거역하지 말라 땅에서 경고하신 이를 거역한 그들이 피하지 못하였거든 하물며 하늘로부터 경고하신 이를 배반하는 우리일까보냐 26그 때에는 그 소리가 땅을 진동하였거니와 이제는 약속하여 이르시되 내가 또 한 번 땅만 아니라 하늘도 진동하리라 하셨느니라 27이 또 한 번이라 하심은 진동하지 아니하는 것을 영존하게 하기 위하여 진동할 것들 곧 만드신 것들이 변동될 것을 나타내심이라 28그러므로 우리가 흔들리지 않는 나라를 받았은즉 은혜를 받자 이로 말미암아 경건함과 두려움으로 하나님을 기쁘시게 섬길지니 29우리 하나님은 소멸하는 불이심이라

[ Hebrews 12:14 - 12:29 ]

14Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;16 that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal.17 For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.18 For you have not come to what may be touched, a blazing fire and darkness and gloom and a tempest19 and the sound of a trumpet and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that no further messages be spoken to them.20 For they could not endure the order that was given, “If even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned.”21 Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I tremble with fear.”22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering,23 and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.25 See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven.26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.”27 This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of things that are shaken—that is, things that have been made—in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain.28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe,29 for our God is a consuming fire. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

We must be holy to see God. Therefore, holiness is the foundation that supports a life of faith. However, it mustn’t end there. The greater goal of a life of faith goes beyond the individual to the establishment of peace and holiness in the community (vv. 14-17). The Israelites were judged for their sin of leaving idol altars intact, engaging in sexual immorality and abandoning justice for the sake of money. Believers in the church, who have entered an even greater covenant than the Israelites, will receive an even greater judgement if they abandon their lives of faith (vv. 18-29). 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 14-17 The race of faith requires us to arrive at the resting place together rather than reaching the summit on our own. Therefore, we cannot move forward while in discord with our neighbours and ignoring those who have stumbled. Rather than striving to be in first place, let’s live as good neighbours to those who are weak even if it means falling behind. 

Vv. 18-29 Those who surrender will be judged. God leads his people to Mount Zion, the resting place in heaven which can only be entered by running the race of faith, through Jesus. That place is a kingdom that is safe from judgement, like Noah’s ark. If we give up on the race and settle comfortably in this world because the path of faith is too difficult, we will not be able to endure the time of judgement that will shake the world. 

Prayer

Lord, help us to remove the roots of bitterness within the community and to walk the path of faith together.
