아브넬과 요압의 비정한 결정으로 애꿎은 청년들이 죽고 두 진영 사이의 전면전이 벌어집니다. 뒤늦게 휴전하지만 그 전에 요압의 동생 아사헬이 전사합니다.

헬갓 핫수림의 대리전 

12넬의 아들 아브넬과 사울의 아들 이스보셋의 신복들은 마하나임에서 나와 기브온에 이르고 13스루야의 아들 요압과 다윗의 신복들도 나와 기브온 못 가에서 그들을 만나 함께 앉으니 이는 못 이쪽이요 그는 못 저쪽이라 14아브넬이 요압에게 이르되 원하건대 청년들에게 일어나서 우리 앞에서 겨루게 하자 요압이 이르되 일어나게 하자 하매 15그들이 일어나 그 수대로 나아가니 베냐민과 사울의 아들 이스보셋의 편에 열두 명이요 다윗의 신복 중에 열두 명이라 16각기 상대방의 머리를 잡고 칼로 상대방의 옆구리를 찌르매 일제히 쓰러진지라 그러므로 그 곳을 헬갓 핫수림이라 일컬었으며 기브온에 있더라 17그 날에 싸움이 심히 맹렬하더니 아브넬과 이스라엘 사람들이 다윗의 신복들 앞에서 패하니라

 아사헬의 죽음 

 18그 곳에 스루야의 세 아들 요압과 아비새와 아사헬이 있었는데 아사헬의 발은 들노루 같이 빠르더라 19아사헬이 아브넬을 쫓아 달려가되 좌우로 치우치지 않고 아브넬의 뒤를 쫓으니 20아브넬이 뒤를 돌아보며 이르되 아사헬아 너냐 대답하되 나로라 21아브넬이 그에게 이르되 너는 왼쪽으로나 오른쪽으로나 가서 청년 하나를 붙잡아 그의 군복을 빼앗으라 하되 아사헬이 그렇게 하기를 원하지 아니하고 그의 뒤를 쫓으매 22아브넬이 다시 아사헬에게 이르되 너는 나 쫓기를 그치라 내가 너를 쳐서 땅에 엎드러지게 할 까닭이 무엇이냐 그렇게 하면 내가 어떻게 네 형 요압을 대면하겠느냐 하되 23그가 물러가기를 거절하매 아브넬이 창 뒤 끝으로 그의 배를 찌르니 창이 그의 등을 꿰뚫고 나간지라 곧 그 곳에 엎드러져 죽으매 아사헬이 엎드러져 죽은 곳에 이르는 자마다 머물러 섰더라

 휴전과 귀환 

 24요압과 아비새가 아브넬의 뒤를 쫓아 기브온 거친 땅의 길 가 기아 맞은쪽 암마 산에 이를 때에 해가 졌고 25베냐민 족속은 함께 모여 아브넬을 따라 한 무리를 이루고 작은 산 꼭대기에 섰더라 26아브넬이 요압에게 외쳐 이르되 칼이 영원히 사람을 상하겠느냐 마침내 참혹한 일이 생길 줄을 알지 못하느냐 네가 언제 무리에게 그의 형제 쫓기를 그치라 명령하겠느냐 27요압이 이르되 하나님이 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 네가 말하지 아니하였더면 무리가 아침에 각각 다 돌아갔을 것이요 그의 형제를 쫓지 아니하였으리라 하고 28요압이 나팔을 불매 온 무리가 머물러 서고 다시는 이스라엘을 쫓아가지 아니하고 다시는 싸우지도 아니하니라 29아브넬과 그의 부하들이 밤새도록 걸어서 아라바를 지나 요단을 건너 비드론 온 땅을 지나 마하나임에 이르니라

 싸움의 결과 30요압이 아브넬 쫓기를 그치고 돌아와 무리를 다 모으니 다윗의 신복 중에 열아홉 명과 아사헬이 없어졌으나 31다윗의 신복들이 베냐민과 아브넬에게 속한 자들을 쳐서 삼백육십 명을 죽였더라 32무리가 아사헬을 들어올려 베들레헴에 있는 그의 조상 묘에 장사하고 요압과 그의 부하들이 밤새도록 걸어서 헤브론에 이른 때에 날이 밝았더라

12Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.13 And Joab the son of Zeruiah and the servants of David went out and met them at the pool of Gibeon. And they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.14 And Abner said to Joab, “Let the young men arise and compete before us.” And Joab said, “Let them arise.”15 Then they arose and passed over by number, twelve for Benjamin and Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.16 And each caught his opponent by the head and thrust his sword in his opponent’s side, so they fell down together. Therefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is at Gibeon.17 And the battle was very fierce that day. And Abner and the men of Israel were beaten before the servants of David.18 And the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel was as swift of foot as a wild gazelle.19 And Asahel pursued Abner, and as he went, he turned neither to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.20 Then Abner looked behind him and said, “Is it you, Asahel?” And he answered, “It is I.”21 Abner said to him, “Turn aside to your right hand or to your left, and seize one of the young men and take his spoil.” But Asahel would not turn aside from following him.22 And Abner said again to Asahel, “Turn aside from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then could I lift up my face to your brother Joab?”23 But he refused to turn aside. Therefore Abner struck him in the stomach with the butt of his spear, so that the spear came out at his back. And he fell there and died where he was. And all who came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died, stood still.24 But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner. And as the sun was going down they came to the hill of Ammah, which lies before Giah on the way to the wilderness of Gibeon.25 And the people of Benjamin gathered themselves together behind Abner and became one group and took their stand on the top of a hill.26 Then Abner called to Joab, “Shall the sword devour forever? Do you not know that the end will be bitter? How long will it be before you tell your people to turn from the pursuit of their brothers?”27 And Joab said, “As God lives, if you had not spoken, surely the men would not have given up the pursuit of their brothers until the morning.”28 So Joab blew the trumpet, and all the men stopped and pursued Israel no more, nor did they fight anymore.29 And Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah. They crossed the Jordan, and marching the whole morning, they came to Mahanaim.30 Joab returned from the pursuit of Abner. And when he had gathered all the people together, there were missing from David’s servants nineteen men besides Asahel.31 But the servants of David had struck down of Benjamin36 0 of Abner’s men.32 And they took up Asahel and buried him in the tomb of his father, which was at Bethlehem. And Joab and his men marched all night, and the day broke upon them at Hebron. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Abner and Joab confronted each other with their armies at Gibeon. With the Philistines close by, the Israelites turned their swords against each other. Initially, they agreed to a representative combat. However, it ended in a tragic massacre on both sides, which, in a flash, escalated into a full-scale war. The fierce battle ended with the victory of David’s army. Meanwhile, Asahel was killed by a spear while pursuing Abner (vv. 12-23). Joab and Abishai chased after Abner until the sun began to set and eventually Abner agreed to end the fight (vv. 24-32). 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 12-17 Tragically, men of the same nation, who should have loved one another, turned against each other and killed each other. The name ‘Helkath-hazzurim’ (Field of Swords) is a reminder of the cruelty of war. There is no victor in a reckless, reasonless war. There is no justification for a war that drives young people towards death for the sake of fulfilling personal ambition. 

Vv. 18-28 The battle grew out of control and resulted in both sides being destroyed. Abner could not control the war, which spurred on Asahel, Joab and Abishai. Let’s lay down the swords we are pointing at each other and extend our bare palms as a gesture of peace. 

Prayer

Lord, bring an end to the internal discord and war in this land so that no more lives will be sacrificed meaninglessly.
