요압이 아브넬을 살해함 

27아브넬이 헤브론으로 돌아오매 요압이 더불어 조용히 말하려는 듯이 그를 데리고 성문 안으로 들어가 거기서 배를 찔러 죽이니 이는 자기의 동생 아사헬의 피로 말미암음이더라 28그 후에 다윗이 듣고 이르되 넬의 아들 아브넬의 피에 대하여 나와 내 나라는 여호와 앞에 영원히 무죄하니 29그 죄가 요압의 머리와 그의 아버지의 온 집으로 돌아갈지어다 또 요압의 집에서 백탁병자나 나병 환자나 지팡이를 의지하는 자나 칼에 죽는 자나 양식이 떨어진 자가 끊어지지 아니할지로다 하니라 30요압과 그의 동생 아비새가 아브넬을 죽인 것은 그가 기브온 전쟁에서 자기 동생 아사헬을 죽인 까닭이었더라

 다윗의 애도와 금식 

 31다윗이 요압과 및 자기와 함께 있는 모든 백성에게 이르되 너희는 옷을 찢고 굵은 베를 띠고 아브넬 앞에서 애도하라 하니라 다윗 왕이 상여를 따라가 32아브넬을 헤브론에 장사하고 아브넬의 무덤에서 왕이 소리를 높여 울고 백성도 다 우니라 33왕이 아브넬을 위하여 애가를 지어 이르되 아브넬의 죽음이 어찌하여 미련한 자의 죽음 같은고 34네 손이 결박되지 아니하였고 네 발이 차꼬에 채이지 아니하였거늘 불의한 자식의 앞에 엎드러짐 같이 네가 엎드러졌도다 하매 온 백성이 다시 그를 슬퍼하여 우니라 35석양에 뭇 백성이 나아와 다윗에게 음식을 권하니 다윗이 맹세하여 이르되 만일 내가 해 지기 전에 떡이나 다른 모든 것을 맛보면 하나님이 내게 벌 위에 벌을 내리심이 마땅하니라 하매

 오해를 푼 백성 

 36온 백성이 보고 기뻐하며 왕이 무슨 일을 하든지 무리가 다 기뻐하므로 37이 날에야 온 백성과 온 이스라엘이 넬의 아들 아브넬을 죽인 것이 왕이 한 것이 아닌 줄을 아니라 

 다윗의 한탄 

 38왕이 그의 신복에게 이르되 오늘 이스라엘의 지도자요 큰 인물이 죽은 것을 알지 못하느냐 39내가 기름 부음을 받은 왕이 되었으나 오늘 약하여서 스루야의 아들인 이 사람들을 제어하기가 너무 어려우니 여호와는 악행한 자에게 그 악한 대로 갚으실지로다 하니라

27And when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him privately, and there he struck him in the stomach, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.28 Afterward, when David heard of it, he said, “I and my kingdom are forever guiltless before the LORD for the blood of Abner the son of Ner.29 May it fall upon the head of Joab and upon all his father’s house, and may the house of Joab never be without one who has a discharge or who is leprous or who holds a spindle or who falls by the sword or who lacks bread!”30 So Joab and Abishai his brother killed Abner, because he had put their brother Asahel to death in the battle at Gibeon.31 Then David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, “Tear your clothes and put on sackcloth and mourn before Abner.” And King David followed the bier.32 They buried Abner at Hebron. And the king lifted up his voice and wept at the grave of Abner, and all the people wept.33 And the king lamented for Abner, saying, “Should Abner die as a fool dies?34 Your hands were not bound; your feet were not fettered; as one falls before the wicked you have fallen.” And all the people wept again over him.35 Then all the people came to persuade David to eat bread while it was yet day. But David swore, saying, “God do so to me and more also, if I taste bread or anything else till the sun goes down!”36 And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them, as everything that the king did pleased all the people.37 So all the people and all Israel understood that day that it had not been the king’s will to put to death Abner the son of Ner.38 And the king said to his servants, “Do you not know that a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Israel?39 And I was gentle today, though anointed king. These men, the sons of Zeruiah, are more severe than I. The LORD repay the evildoer according to his wickedness!”

Thinking & Understanding

Joab carried out personal vengeance against Abner regardless of David’s will. David immediately declared that Joab had acted alone in killing Abner and pronounced a fearsome curse on Joab (vv. 27-30). He mourned as he followed the bier, sang a song of lament, fasted and wept. All the people of Judah and Israel were moved by David’s sincerity and realized his innocence. Because Joab was too powerful, David could not properly punish Joab but entrusted the matter to God’s righteous judgement (vv. 31-39).  

What lesson is God teaching me?

V. 27 Joab killed Abner by wickedly feigning friendship before stabbing him in the back. His evil act could not be justified as just vengeance. The righteousness of the means and methods we use is just as important as the righteousness of our motives.  

Vv. 28-37 David did his utmost to avoid misunderstandings and condemnation. This was because the alternative would have been detrimental not only to him but to the rest of the people and God’s kingdom. Although it is important to listen to just criticism and take it to heart, criticism that arises from a misunderstanding needs to be rectified. Let’s act wisely and appropriately so that others may realise and be moved by the truth.

Lord, help me to overcome trials by seeking out the best path with wisdom even in the worst of situations by relying on your Word.
