압살롬은 아히도벨의 탁월한 계획 대신 후새의 나쁜 제안을 받아들입니다. 이 모든 과정은 압살롬을 징계하시려는 하나님의 계획 가운데 있었습니다.

다윗을 추적하겠다는 아히도벨 

1아히도벨이 또 압살롬에게 이르되 이제 내가 사람 만 이천 명을 택하게 하소서 오늘 밤에 내가 일어나서 다윗의 뒤를 추적하여 2그가 곤하고 힘이 빠졌을 때에 기습하여 그를 무섭게 하면 그와 함께 있는 모든 백성이 도망하리니 내가 다윗 왕만 쳐죽이고 3모든 백성이 당신께 돌아오게 하리니 모든 사람이 돌아오기는 왕이 찾는 이 사람에게 달렸음이라 그리하면 모든 백성이 평안하리이다 하니 4압살롬과 이스라엘 장로들이 다 그 말을 옳게 여기더라

 아히도벨을 반대하는 후새 

 5압살롬이 이르되 아렉 사람 후새도 부르라 우리가 이제 그의 말도 듣자 하니라 6후새가 압살롬에게 이르매 압살롬이 그에게 말하여 이르되 아히도벨이 이러이러하게 말하니 우리가 그 말대로 행하랴 그렇지 아니하거든 너는 말하라 하니 7후새가 압살롬에게 이르되 이번에는 아히도벨이 베푼 계략이 좋지 아니하니이다 하고 8또 후새가 말하되 왕도 아시거니와 왕의 아버지와 그의 추종자들은 용사라 그들은 들에 있는 곰이 새끼를 빼앗긴 것 같이 격분하였고 왕의 부친은 전쟁에 익숙한 사람인즉 백성과 함께 자지 아니하고 9지금 그가 어느 굴에나 어느 곳에 숨어 있으리니 혹 무리 중에 몇이 먼저 엎드러지면 그 소문을 듣는 자가 말하기를 압살롬을 따르는 자 가운데에서 패함을 당하였다 할지라 10비록 그가 사자 같은 마음을 가진 용사의 아들일지라도 낙심하리니 이는 이스라엘 무리가 왕의 아버지는 영웅이요 그의 추종자들도 용사인 줄 앎이니이다

 후새의 계략 

 11나는 이렇게 계략을 세웠나이다 온 이스라엘을 단부터 브엘세바까지 바닷가의 많은 모래 같이 당신께로 모으고 친히 전장에 나가시고 12우리가 그 만날 만한 곳에서 그를 기습하기를 이슬이 땅에 내림 같이 우리가 그의 위에 덮여 그와 그 함께 있는 모든 사람을 하나도 남겨 두지 아니할 것이요 13또 만일 그가 어느 성에 들었으면 온 이스라엘이 밧줄을 가져다가 그 성을 강으로 끌어들여서 그 곳에 작은 돌 하나도 보이지 아니하게 할 것이니이다 하매 14압살롬과 온 이스라엘 사람들이 이르되 아렉 사람 후새의 계략은 아히도벨의 계략보다 낫다 하니 이는 여호와께서 압살롬에게 화를 내리려 하사 아히도벨의 좋은 계략을 물리치라고 명령하셨음이더라

[ 2 Samuel 17:1 - 17:14 ]

1Moreover, Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Let me choose twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue David tonight.2 I will come upon him while he is weary and discouraged and throw him into a panic, and all the people who are with him will flee. I will strike down only the king,3 and I will bring all the people back to you as a bride comes home to her husband. You seek the life of only one man, and all the people will be at peace.”4 And the advice seemed right in the eyes of Absalom and all the elders of Israel.5 Then Absalom said, “Call Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear what he has to say.”6 And when Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom said to him, “Thus has Ahithophel spoken; shall we do as he says? If not, you speak.”7 Then Hushai said to Absalom, “This time the counsel that Ahithophel has given is not good.”8 Hushai said, “You know that your father and his men are mighty men, and that they are enraged, like a bear robbed of her cubs in the field. Besides, your father is expert in war; he will not spend the night with the people.9 Behold, even now he has hidden himself in one of the pits or in some other place. And as soon as some of the people fall at the first attack, whoever hears it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the people who follow Absalom.’10 Then even the valiant man, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will utterly melt with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man, and that those who are with him are valiant men.11 But my counsel is that all Israel be gathered to you, from Dan to Beersheba, as the sand by the sea for multitude, and that you go to battle in person.12 So we shall come upon him in some place where he is to be found, and we shall light upon him as the dew falls on the ground, and of him and all the men with him not one will be left.13 If he withdraws into a city, then all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we shall drag it into the valley, until not even a pebble is to be found there.”14 And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” For the LORD had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, so that the LORD might bring harm upon Absalom. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Ahithophel suggested that their best chance of eliminating David while risking the fewest casualties was by launching a surprise attack before David had time to prepare his army (vv. 1-4). Ahithophel was an advisor that David had good reason to fear (15:31). At that moment, Hushai stepped up. Hushai argued that David and his soldiers should not be underestimated. He asserted that if the surprise ambush failed, there would be no going back, so it would be better to gather all the armies of Israel and instigate a full-scale war. Absalom chose to follow Hushai’s advice, giving David enough time to flee (vv. 5-14). 

Who is God?

V. 14 The plans of human beings cannot defeat God’s plans. Hushai’s plan was chosen not because it was better but because David had prayed for God to turn Ahithophel’s counsel into foolishness (15:31). Do you fully trust God to answer your prayers?  

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 5-14 Even on enemy territory, Hushai did his utmost for David rather than putting his own security first. God was pleased by his loyalty and ensured that fruit was borne from his labours. God is seeking a person like this today. Let’s pray to become that person.

Lord, help me to rely on you, for you are sovereign over all things.
