[ 전도서 6:1 - 6:12 ] (찬송455장)

자족 없는 재물의 무익함 

1내가 해 아래에서 한 가지 불행한 일이 있는 것을 보았나니 이는 사람의 마음을 무겁게 하는 것이라 2어떤 사람은 그의 영혼이 바라는 모든 소원에 부족함이 없어 재물과 부요와 존귀를 하나님께 받았으나 하나님께서 그가 그것을 누리도록 허락하지 아니하셨으므로 다른 사람이 누리나니 이것도 헛되어 악한 병이로다 3사람이 비록 백 명의 자녀를 낳고 또 장수하여 사는 날이 많을지라도 그의 영혼은 그러한 행복으로 만족하지 못하고 또 그가 안장되지 못하면 나는 이르기를 낙태된 자가 그보다는 낫다 하나니 4낙태된 자는 헛되이 왔다가 어두운 중에 가매 그의 이름이 어둠에 덮이니 5햇빛도 보지 못하고 또 그것을 알지도 못하나 이가 그보다 더 평안함이라 6그가 비록 천 년의 갑절을 산다 할지라도 행복을 보지 못하면 마침내 다 한 곳으로 돌아가는 것뿐이 아니냐

 끝없는 헛된 욕망

 7사람의 수고는 다 자기의 입을 위함이나 그 식욕은 채울 수 없느니라 8지혜자가 우매자보다 나은 것이 무엇이냐 살아 있는 자들 앞에서 행할 줄을 아는 가난한 자에게는 무슨 유익이 있는가 9눈으로 보는 것이 마음으로 공상하는 것보다 나으나 이것도 헛되어 바람을 잡는 것이로다

 피조물의 한계 

 10이미 있는 것은 무엇이든지 오래 전부터 그의 이름이 이미 불린 바 되었으며 사람이 무엇인지도 이미 안 바 되었나니 자기보다 강한 자와는 능히 다툴 수 없느니라 11헛된 것을 더하게 하는 많은 일들이 있나니 그것들이 사람에게 무슨 유익이 있으랴 12헛된 생명의 모든 날을 그림자 같이 보내는 일평생에 사람에게 무엇이 낙인지를 누가 알며 그 후에 해 아래에서 무슨 일이 있을 것을 누가 능히 그에게 고하리요

[ Ecclesiastes 6:1 - 6:12 ]

1There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, and it lies heavy on mankind:2 a man to whom God gives wealth, possessions, and honor, so that he lacks nothing of all that he desires, yet God does not give him power to enjoy them, but a stranger enjoys them. This is vanity; it is a grievous evil.3 If a man fathers a hundred children and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul is not satisfied with life’s good things, and he also has no burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he.4 For it comes in vanity and goes in darkness, and in darkness its name is covered.5 Moreover, it has not seen the sun or known anything, yet it finds rest rather than he.6 Even though he should live a thousand years twice over, yet enjoy no good—do not all go to the one place?7 All the toil of man is for his mouth, yet his appetite is not satisfied.8 For what advantage has the wise man over the fool? And what does the poor man have who knows how to conduct himself before the living?9 Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the appetite: this also is vanity and a striving after wind.10 Whatever has come to be has already been named, and it is known what man is, and that he is not able to dispute with one stronger than he.11 The more words, the more vanity, and what is the advantage to man?12 For who knows what is good for man while he lives the few days of his vain life, which he passes like a shadow? For who can tell man what will be after him under the sun? 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

The preacher saw that the world was so unjust that many were unable to enjoy their own possessions. The preacher declared that it would be better to be born dead than to suffer such a fate. He said that not being able to rest or enjoy one’s possessions was the result of greed. ‘Rest’ could be achieved when one was satisfied by their possessions (vv. 1-9). The preacher suggested that ‘rest’ and ‘enjoyment’ resulted from being satisfied with one’s lot in life rather than striving to possess more and obtain a higher status. This has been proven throughout history time and time again (vv. 10-12). 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 1-12 Let’s pursue a life of enjoyment rather than wealth. By dedicating our lives to the pursuit of greater wealth, we waste our short lives feeling anxious and constantly labouring. For those who are satisfied by and thankful for their daily bread, every day is a Sabbath and a celebration. What greed do you need to lay down in order to enjoy today? 

Vv. 7-9  Greed interferes with rest. Greed is a bait that leads us into a blackhole of desire. If we live as slaves to greed without ever resting, what use are the wealth or successes that result from that greed? Let’s not delay rest until tomorrow.

Lord, help me to live enjoying satisfaction and blessings in you.
