비천한 북방 왕은 자신을 신들보다 대단히 여기며 승승장구하지만, 갑작스러운 최후를 맞이하게 될 것입니다. 반면에 하나님은 ‘책에 기록된’ 모든 자를 구원하여 주실 것입니다.

왕의 교만 

36그 왕은 자기 마음대로 행하며 스스로 높여 모든 신보다 크다 하며 비상한 말로 신들의 신을 대적하며 형통하기를 분노하심이 그칠 때까지 하리니 이는 그 작정된 일을 반드시 이루실 것임이라 37그가 모든 것보다 스스로 크다 하고 그의 조상들의 신들과 여자들이 흠모하는 것을 돌아보지 아니하며 어떤 신도 돌아보지 아니하고 38그 대신에 강한 신을 공경할 것이요 또 그의 조상들이 알지 못하던 신에게 금 은 보석과 보물을 드려 공경할 것이며 39그는 이방신을 힘입어 크게 견고한 산성들을 점령할 것이요 무릇 그를 안다 하는 자에게는 영광을 더하여 여러 백성을 다스리게도 하며 그에게서 뇌물을 받고 땅을 나눠 주기도 하리라

 왕의 종말 

 40마지막 때에 남방 왕이 그와 힘을 겨룰 것이나 북방 왕이 병거와 마병과 많은 배로 회오리바람처럼 그에게로 마주 와서 그 여러 나라에 침공하여 물이 넘침 같이 지나갈 것이요 41그가 또 영화로운 땅에 들어갈 것이요 많은 나라를 패망하게 할 것이나 오직 에돔과 모압과 암몬 자손의 지도자들은 그의 손에서 벗어나리라 42그가 여러 나라들에 그의 손을 펴리니 애굽 땅도 면하지 못할 것이니 43그가 권세로 애굽의 금 은과 모든 보물을 차지할 것이요 리비아 사람과 구스 사람이 그의 시종이 되리라 44그러나 동북에서부터 소문이 이르러 그를 번민하게 하므로 그가 분노하여 나가서 많은 무리를 다 죽이며 멸망시키고자 할 것이요 45그가 장막 궁전을 바다와 영화롭고 거룩한 산 사이에 세울 것이나 그의 종말이 이르리니 도와 줄 자가 없으리라

 다가올 영광과 수치 

 12:1그 때에 네 민족을 호위하는 큰 군주 미가엘이 일어날 것이요 또 환난이 있으리니 이는 개국 이래로 그 때까지 없던 환난일 것이며 그 때에 네 백성 중 책에 기록된 모든 자가 구원을 받을 것이라 2땅의 티끌 가운데에서 자는 자 중에서 많은 사람이 깨어나 영생을 받는 자도 있겠고 수치를 당하여서 영원히 부끄러움을 당할 자도 있을 것이며 3지혜 있는 자는 궁창의 빛과 같이 빛날 것이요 많은 사람을 옳은 데로 돌아오게 한 자는 별과 같이 영원토록 빛나리라 4다니엘아 마지막 때까지 이 말을 간수하고 이 글을 봉함하라 많은 사람이 빨리 왕래하며 지식이 더하리라

36“And the king shall do as he wills. He shall exalt himself and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak astonishing things against the God of gods. He shall prosper till the indignation is accomplished; for what is decreed shall be done.37 He shall pay no attention to the gods of his fathers, or to the one beloved by women. He shall not pay attention to any other god, for he shall magnify himself above all.38 He shall honor the god of fortresses instead of these. A god whom his fathers did not know he shall honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and costly gifts.39 He shall deal with the strongest fortresses with the help of a foreign god. Those who acknowledge him he shall load with honor. He shall make them rulers over many and shall divide the land for a price.40 “At the time of the end, the king of the south shall attack him, but the king of the north shall rush upon him like a whirlwind, with chariots and horsemen, and with many ships. And he shall come into countries and shall overflow and pass through.41 He shall come into the glorious land. And tens of thousands shall fall, but these shall be delivered out of his hand: Edom and Moab and the main part of the Ammonites.42 He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape.43 He shall become ruler of the treasures of gold and of silver, and all the precious things of Egypt, and the Libyans and the Cushites shall follow in his train.44 But news from the east and the north shall alarm him, and he shall go out with great fury to destroy and devote many to destruction.45 And he shall pitch his palatial tents between the sea and the glorious holy mountain. Yet he shall come to his end, with none to help him.12 :1“At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book.2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.3 And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.4 But you, Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.” 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

The description of the king of the north goes beyond Epiphanes and matches with the standard depiction of the Antichrist, who will appear throughout history. However, no matter how much influence the Antichrist wields in this world, it is nothing more than a desperate last resort by evil that has been temporarily allowed by God. The Antichrist will be destroyed in an instant (11:36-45). That final day will be an unprecedented time of suffering for God’s people, but God’s angel Michael will be beside them. The believers who wisely endure this time will gain eternal life (12:1-4). 

Who is God?

11:36, 45 God governs even the works of Satan. The Antichrist will succeed at times but also be destroyed in an instant in accordance with God’s will. We mustn’t bend before the power of the world but staunchly continue down the narrow path that leads to God’s kingdom. 

What lesson is God teaching me?

12:2-4 Those who belong to Jesus, the true Wise Man, possess the wisdom of God (1 Cor. 1:30).  Therefore, we, who have been made wise by our faith in Jesus, have a responsibility to share that wisdom with others. Let’s listen to God’s Word of wisdom and act accordingly so that we may preach Jesus through our lives and help others to also walk on the path of eternal life by guiding them towards Jesus.

Lord, help me to live a distinguished life while awaiting your appointed time.
