다윗의 환궁을 둘러싸고 유다 지파와 이스라엘 지파 간에 불거진 분쟁은 결국 세바의 난으로 이어지고, 이 난을 진압하는 과정에서 아마사와 요압의 불충(不忠)이 드러납니다.

유다와 이스라엘 지파의 갈등 

40왕이 길갈로 건너오고 김함도 함께 건너오니 온 유다 백성과 이스라엘 백성의 절반이나 왕과 함께 건너니라 41온 이스라엘 사람이 왕께 나아와 왕께 아뢰되 우리 형제 유다 사람들이 어찌 왕을 도둑하여 왕과 왕의 집안과 왕을 따르는 모든 사람을 인도하여 요단을 건너가게 하였나이까 하매 42모든 유다 사람이 이스라엘 사람에게 대답하되 왕은 우리의 종친인 까닭이라 너희가 어찌 이 일에 대하여 분 내느냐 우리가 왕의 것을 조금이라도 얻어 먹었느냐 왕께서 우리에게 선물로 주신 것이 있느냐 43이스라엘 사람이 유다 사람에게 대답하여 이르되 우리는 왕에 대하여 열 몫을 가졌으니 다윗에게 대하여 너희보다 더욱 관계가 있거늘 너희가 어찌 우리를 멸시하여 우리 왕을 모셔 오는 일에 먼저 우리와 의논하지 아니하였느냐 하나 유다 사람의 말이 이스라엘 사람의 말보다 더 강경하였더라

 세바의 난 

 20:1마침 거기에 불량배 하나가 있으니 그의 이름은 세바인데 베냐민 사람 비그리의 아들이었더라 그가 나팔을 불며 이르되 우리는 다윗과 나눌 분깃이 없으며 이새의 아들에게서 받을 유산이 우리에게 없도다 이스라엘아 각각 장막으로 돌아가라 하매 2이에 온 이스라엘 사람들이 다윗 따르기를 그치고 올라가 비그리의 아들 세바를 따르나 유다 사람들은 그들의 왕과 합하여 요단에서 예루살렘까지 따르니라

 후궁에 대한 조치 3다윗이 예루살렘 본궁에 이르러 전에 머물러 왕궁을 지키게 한 후궁 열 명을 잡아 별실에 가두고 먹을 것만 주고 그들에게 관계하지 아니하니 그들이 죽는 날까지 갇혀서 생과부로 지내니라

 아마사의 지체(遲滯) 

 4왕이 아마사에게 이르되 너는 나를 위하여 삼 일 내로 유다 사람을 큰 소리로 불러 모으고 너도 여기 있으라 하니라 5아마사가 유다 사람을 모으러 가더니 왕이 정한 기일에 지체된지라

 요압의 아마사 살해 

 6다윗이 이에 아비새에게 이르되 이제 비그리의 아들 세바가 압살롬보다 우리를 더 해하리니 너는 네 주의 부하들을 데리고 그의 뒤를 쫓아가라 그가 견고한 성읍에 들어가 우리들을 피할까 염려하노라 하매 7요압을 따르는 자들과 그렛 사람들과 블렛 사람들과 모든 용사들이 다 아비새를 따라 비그리의 아들 세바를 뒤쫓으려고 예루살렘에서 나와 8기브온 큰 바위 곁에 이르매 아마사가 맞으러 오니 그 때에 요압이 군복을 입고 띠를 띠고 칼집에 꽂은 칼을 허리에 맸는데 그가 나아갈 때에 칼이 빠져 떨어졌더라 9요압이 아마사에게 이르되 내 형은 평안하냐 하며 오른손으로 아마사의 수염을 잡고 그와 입을 맞추려는 체하매 10아마사가 요압의 손에 있는 칼은 주의하지 아니한지라 요압이 칼로 그의 배를 찌르매 그의 창자가 땅에 쏟아지니 그를 다시 치지 아니하여도 죽으니라 요압과 그의 동생 아비새가 비그리의 아들 세바를 뒤쫓을새 11요압의 청년 중 하나가 아마사 곁에 서서 이르되 요압을 좋아하는 자가 누구이며 요압을 따라 다윗을 위하는 자는 누구냐 하니 12아마사가 길 가운데 피 속에 놓여 있는지라 그 청년이 모든 백성이 서 있는 것을 보고 아마사를 큰길에서부터 밭으로 옮겼으나 거기에 이르는 자도 다 멈추어 서는 것을 보고 옷을 그 위에 덮으니라 13아마사를 큰길에서 옮겨가매 사람들이 다 요압을 따라 비그리의 아들 세바를 뒤쫓아가니라

40The king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him. All the people of Judah, and also half the people of Israel, brought the king on his way.41 Then all the men of Israel came to the king and said to the king, “Why have our brothers the men of Judah stolen you away and brought the king and his household over the Jordan, and all David’s men with him?”42 All the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “Because the king is our close relative. Why then are you angry over this matter? Have we eaten at all at the king’s expense? Or has he given us any gift?”43 And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, “We have ten shares in the king, and in David also we have more than you. Why then did you despise us? Were we not the first to speak of bringing back our king?” But the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.20 :1Now there happened to be there a worthless man, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjaminite. And he blew the trumpet and said, “We have no portion in David, and we have no inheritance in the son of Jesse; every man to his tents, O Israel!”2 So all the men of Israel withdrew from David and followed Sheba the son of Bichri. But the men of Judah followed their king steadfastly from the Jordan to Jerusalem.3 And David came to his house at Jerusalem. And the king took the ten concubines whom he had left to care for the house and put them in a house under guard and provided for them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living as if in widowhood.4 Then the king said to Amasa, “Call the men of Judah together to me within three days, and be here yourself.”5 So Amasa went to summon Judah, but he delayed beyond the set time that had been appointed him.6 And David said to Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom. Take your lord’s servants and pursue him, lest he get himself to fortified cities and escape from us.”7 And there went out after him Joab’s men and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men. They went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.8 When they were at the great stone that is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Now Joab was wearing a soldier’s garment, and over it was a belt with a sword in its sheath fastened on his thigh, and as he went forward it fell out.9 And Joab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my brother?” And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.10 But Amasa did not observe the sword that was in Joab’s hand. So Joab struck him with it in the stomach and spilled his entrails to the ground without striking a second blow, and he died. Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri.11 And one of Joab’s young men took his stand by Amasa and said, “Whoever favors Joab, and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab.”12 And Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the highway. And anyone who came by, seeing him, stopped. And when the man saw that all the people stopped, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field and threw a garment over him.13 When he was taken out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.

Thinking & Understanding

The tribe of Judah won an argument against the tribes of northern Israel regarding their sovereignty (19:40-43). Sheba, a Benjaminite, responded to Judah’s seizure of sovereignty by encouraging the Israelites to withdraw from David. David told Amasa to call the people of Judah to assemble an army, but when this was delayed, David commanded Abishai to capture Sheba. Joab, who met Amasa in Gibeon with Abishai, mercilessly killed Amasa by pretending to greet him (20:1-13). 

What lesson is God teaching me?

19:40-43 A conflict broke out between Judah and Israel in the lead up to the return to Jerusalem. This was a stark contrast to the attitudes of Mephibosheth, who willingly gave up land, and Barzillai, who declined a government position. Are your passions and demands adversely causing strife within your community? 

20:1-2 When the Israelites realised that they would not have any political inheritance, they turned away from David without any hesitation. The minute they decided they had nothing to gain, flattery turned into disregard and loyalty turned into betrayal. Is Jesus always your king even when he does not give you the things you desire? Are you helping to establish a community of faith where people stick by each other even when there is nothing to gain?

Lord, help me not to make decisions about public matters based on my personal feelings.
