고난 중에 복음을 전한 지도자들 

1형제들아 우리가 너희 가운데 들어간 것이 헛되지 않은 줄을 너희가 친히 아나니 2너희가 아는 바와 같이 우리가 먼저 빌립보에서 고난과 능욕을 당하였으나 우리 하나님을 힘입어 많은 싸움 중에 하나님의 복음을 너희에게 전하였노라

 복음 증거할 때의 태도 

 3우리의 권면은 간사함이나 부정에서 난 것이 아니요 속임수로 하는 것도 아니라 4오직 하나님께 옳게 여기심을 입어 복음을 위탁 받았으니 우리가 이와 같이 말함은 사람을 기쁘게 하려 함이 아니요 오직 우리 마음을 감찰하시는 하나님을 기쁘시게 하려 함이라

 성도들을 향한 태도 

 5너희도 알거니와 우리가 아무 때에도 아첨하는 말이나 탐심의 탈을 쓰지 아니한 것을 하나님이 증언하시느니라 6또한 우리는 너희에게서든지 다른 이에게서든지 사람에게서는 영광을 구하지 아니하였노라 7우리는 그리스도의 사도로서 마땅히 권위를 주장할 수 있으나 도리어 너희 가운데서 유순한 자가 되어 유모가 자기 자녀를 기름과 같이 하였으니 8우리가 이같이 너희를 사모하여 하나님의 복음뿐 아니라 우리의 목숨까지도 너희에게 주기를 기뻐함은 너희가 우리의 사랑하는 자 됨이라

 9형제들아 우리의 수고와 애쓴 것을 너희가 기억하리니 너희 아무에게도 폐를 끼치지 아니하려고 밤낮으로 일하면서 너희에게 하나님의 복음을 전하였노라 10우리가 너희 믿는 자들을 향하여 어떻게 거룩하고 옳고 흠 없이 행하였는지에 대하여 너희가 증인이요 하나님도 그러하시도다 11너희도 아는 바와 같이 우리가 너희 각 사람에게 아버지가 자기 자녀에게 하듯 권면하고 위로하고 경계하노니 12이는 너희를 부르사 자기 나라와 영광에 이르게 하시는 하나님께 합당히 행하게 하려 함이라

 고난에 동참한 성도들의 삶에 감사하여 기도함 

 13이러므로 우리가 하나님께 끊임없이 감사함은 너희가 우리에게 들은 바 하나님의 말씀을 받을 때에 사람의 말로 받지 아니하고 하나님의 말씀으로 받음이니 진실로 그러하도다 이 말씀이 또한 너희 믿는 자 가운데에서 역사하느니라 14형제들아 너희가 그리스도 예수 안에서 유대에 있는 하나님의 교회들을 본받은 자 되었으니 그들이 유대인들에게 고난을 받음과 같이 너희도 너희 동족에게서 동일한 고난을 받았느니라 15유대인은 주 예수와 선지자들을 죽이고 우리를 쫓아내고 하나님을 기쁘시게 하지 아니하고 모든 사람에게 대적이 되어 16우리가 이방인에게 말하여 구원받게 함을 그들이 금하여 자기 죄를 항상 채우매 노하심이 끝까지 그들에게 임하였느니라

[ 1 Thessalonians 2:1 - 2:16 ]

1For you yourselves know, brothers, that our coming to you was not in vain.2 But though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we had boldness in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the midst of much conflict.3 For our appeal does not spring from error or impurity or any attempt to deceive,4 but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts.5 For we never came with words of flattery, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed—God is witness.6 Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ.7 But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children.8 So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.9 For you remember, brothers, our labor and toil: we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.10 You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless was our conduct toward you believers.11 For you know how, like a father with his children,12 we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.13 And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.14 For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea. For you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews,15 who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out, and displease God and oppose all mankind16 by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved—so as always to fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them at last! 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Paul defended himself against the Thessalonian believers’ misunderstandings about him. Paul, as a steward of the gospel, had visited Thessalonica even amid hardship for the sake of preaching the gospel and had dwelled among them with the heart of a parent (vv. 1-12). Paul proved the truth of what he had preached by pointing out the transformed lives of the believers as evidence. Then Paul declared that God’s wrath would come upon the Jews who slandered the gospel (vv. 13-16). 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 4-6, 12 The essential principle of Christian ministry is ‘God’s love’. Paul did not preach the gospel to win people’s favour or be glorified by them but was solely motivated by the desire to please God. Christian workers must be wary of the desire to be acknowledged by others. We can be bold before others when we seek to be acknowledged by God rather than others.  

V. 13 The true Word of God leads to revolutionary transformation. The living and moving Word of God can be encountered when God’s Word is preached properly by those who proclaim it and received properly by those who listen. For this to happen, those who preach the Word and receive the Word must abandon all prejudice and greed, and approach the Word as empty vessels with pure and lowly hearts.

Lord, help me to live in love before you and others so that I may not stand ashamed before your Word.
