1 므낫세가 왕위에 오를 때에 나이가 십이 세라 예루살렘에서 오십오 년 동안 다스리며
2 여호와 보시기에 악을 행하여 여호와께서 이스라엘 자손 앞에서 쫓아내신 이방 사람들의 가증한 일을 본받아
3 그의 아버지 히스기야가 헐어 버린 산당을 다시 세우며 바알들을 위하여 제단을 쌓으며 아세라 목상을 만들며 하늘의 모든 일월성신을 경배하여 섬기며
4 여호와께서 전에 이르시기를 내가 내 이름을 예루살렘에 영원히 두리라 하신 여호와의 전에 제단들을 쌓고
5 또 여호와의 전 두 마당에 하늘의 일월성신을 위하여 제단들을 쌓고
6 또 힌놈의 아들 골짜기에서 그의 아들들을 불 가운데로 지나가게 하며 또 점치며 사술과 요술을 행하며 신접한 자와 박수를 신임하여 여호와 보시기에 악을 많이 행하여 여호와를 진노하게 하였으며
7 또 자기가 만든 아로새긴 목상을 하나님의 전에 세웠더라 옛적에 하나님이 이 성전에 대하여 다윗과 그의 아들 솔로몬에게 이르시기를 내가 이스라엘 모든 지파 중에서 택한 이 성전과 예루살렘에 내 이름을 영원히 둘지라
8 만일 이스라엘 사람이 내가 명령한 일들 곧 모세를 통하여 전한 모든 율법과 율례와 규례를 지켜 행하면 내가 그들의 발로 다시는 그의 조상들에게 정하여 준 땅에서 옮기지 않게 하리라 하셨으나
9 유다와 예루살렘 주민이 므낫세의 꾀임을 받고 악을 행한 것이 여호와께서 이스라엘 자손 앞에서 멸하신 모든 나라보다 더욱 심하였더라
10 여호와께서 므낫세와 그의 백성에게 이르셨으나 그들이 듣지 아니하므로
11 여호와께서 앗수르 왕의 군대 지휘관들이 와서 치게 하시매 그들이 므낫세를 사로잡고 쇠사슬로 결박하여 바벨론으로 끌고 간지라
12 그가 환난을 당하여 그의 하나님 여호와께 간구하고 그의 조상들의 하나님 앞에 크게 겸손하여
13 기도하였으므로 하나님이 그의 기도를 받으시며 그의 간구를 들으시사 그가 예루살렘에 돌아와서 다시 왕위에 앉게 하시매 므낫세가 그제서야 여호와께서 하나님이신 줄을 알았더라
14 그 후에 다윗 성 밖 기혼 서쪽 골짜기 안에 외성을 쌓되 어문 어귀까지 이르러 오벨을 둘러 매우 높이 쌓고 또 유다 모든 견고한 성읍에 군대 지휘관을 두며
15 이방 신들과 여호와의 전의 우상을 제거하며 여호와의 전을 건축한 산에와 예루살렘에 쌓은 모든 제단들을 다 성 밖에 던지고
16 여호와의 제단을 보수하고 화목제와 감사제를 그 제단 위에 드리고 유다를 명령하여 이스라엘 하나님 여호와를 섬기라 하매
17 백성이 그의 하나님 여호와께만 제사를 드렸으나 아직도 산당에서 제사를 드렸더라
18 므낫세의 남은 사적과 그가 하나님께 한 기도와 선견자가 이스라엘 하나님 여호와의 이름으로 권한 말씀은 모두 이스라엘 왕들의 행장에 기록되었고
19 또 그의 기도와 그의 기도를 들으신 것과 그의 모든 죄와 허물과 겸손하기 전에 산당을 세운 곳과 아세라 목상과 우상을 세운 곳들이 다 호새의 사기에 기록되니라
20 므낫세가 그의 열조와 함께 누우매 그의 궁에 장사되고 그의 아들 아몬이 대신하여 왕이 되니라
21 아몬이 왕위에 오를 때에 나이가 이십이 세라 예루살렘에서 이 년 동안 다스리며
22 그의 아버지 므낫세의 행함 같이 여호와 보시기에 악을 행하여 아몬이 그의 아버지 므낫세가 만든 아로새긴 모든 우상에게 제사하여 섬겼으며
23 이 아몬이 그의 아버지 므낫세가 스스로 겸손함 같이 여호와 앞에서 스스로 겸손하지 아니하고 더욱 범죄하더니
24 그의 신하가 반역하여 왕을 궁중에서 죽이매
25 백성들이 아몬 왕을 반역한 사람들을 다 죽이고 그의 아들 요시야를 대신하여 왕으로 삼으니라
요약: 므낫세는 유다가 멸망하게 된 결정적 원인으로 지목될 정도로 악한 왕입니다. 그런 그도 하나님의 징계를 받아 바벨론으로 끌려간 후에 회개하여 하나님의 용서를 받습니다.
하나님은 어떤 분입니까?
10-13절 아무리 악한 자라도 겸손히 회개하면 용서하십니다. 하나님의 말씀을 듣지 않은 므낫세는 하나님의 경고대로 그 땅에서 쫓겨났습니다. 포로로 끌려간 바벨론에서 겸손히 회개하자, 하나님은 그를 다시 예루살렘으로 돌려보내셨습니다. 므낫세는 돌아오고 나서야 하나님을 깨달았습니다. 진정으로 뉘우친다면, 하나님은 십자가에 달린 강도를 용서하시고(눅 23:40-43), 죄인 중의 괴수에게도 은혜를 베푸십니다(딤전 1:15-16). 회개하는 자에게는 언제나 죄보다 하나님의 은혜가 큽니다.
내게 주시는 교훈은 무엇입니까?
1-9절 므낫세는 가나안의 풍속을 따르며 히스기야가 개혁한 모든 것을 완전히 뒤집었습니다. 그는 히스기야가 제거한 온갖 우상숭배의 풍습을 되살렸고 성전 안에도 우상을 위한 제단을 만들었으며, 인신 제사를 드렸고 잡다한 미신까지 끌어들였습니다. 므낫세 때문에 유다 백성도 악에 물들었습니다. 그들은 하나님이 쫓아내신 가나안 민족들보다 더 흉악해졌습니다. 쌓기는 힘들어도 무너뜨리긴 쉽습니다. 바로잡는 데는 오래 걸려도 흐트러뜨리는 건 한순간입니다. 그러니 우리는 말씀을 읽고 말씀대로 사는 수고를 쉴 수 없습니다. 신앙의 경주를 멈출 수 없습니다.14-17절 ‘여호와가 하나님이신 줄’(13절) 알게 된 므낫세는 자기 잘못을 바로잡으려 노력했습니다. 우상과 우상을 위해 쌓은 제단을 제거하고 여호와의 제단을 보수하여 하나님께 제사를 드렸으며, 유다 백성에게 하나님만 섬기라고 선포했습니다. 바벨론에서 돌아온 므낫세처럼, 우리도 하나님의 은혜로 죄와 사망에서 돌아왔습니다. 그렇다면 자기 잘못을 바로잡은 므낫세처럼 우리도 말씀에서 벗어난 삶을 바로잡아야 합니다. 받은 은혜가 크고 깨달은 은혜가 많을수록 돌이켜야 할 것이 많이 보일 것입니다. 그러니 은혜로 돌아온 사람은 돌이키며 살게 됩니다.20-25절 아몬은 므낫세처럼 악한 일을 저질렀으나 므낫세와 달리 회개하지 않았습니다. 그는 결국 배신한 신하들 손에 암살되었습니다. 회개하지 않으면 회복될 수 없습니다. 돌이키지 않으면 하나님의 용서도 경험할 수 없습니다.

1Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem.2 And he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD drove out before the people of Israel.3 For he rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had broken down, and he erected altars to the Baals, and made Asheroth, and worshiped all the host of heaven and served them.4 And he built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD had said, “In Jerusalem shall my name be forever.”5 And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD.6 And he burned his sons as an offering in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, and used fortune-telling and omens and sorcery, and dealt with mediums and with necromancers. He did much evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking him to anger.7 And the carved image of the idol that he had made he set in the house of God, of which God said to David and to Solomon his son, “In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my name forever,8 and I will no more remove the foot of Israel from the land that I appointed for your fathers, if only they will be careful to do all that I have commanded them, all the law, the statutes, and the rules given through Moses.”9 Manasseh led Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem astray, to do more evil than the nations whom the LORD destroyed before the people of Israel.10 The LORD spoke to Manasseh and to his people, but they paid no attention.11 Therefore the LORD brought upon them the commanders of the army of the king of Assyria, who captured Manasseh with hooks and bound him with chains of bronze and brought him to Babylon.12 And when he was in distress, he entreated the favor of the LORD his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers.13 He prayed to him, and God was moved by his entreaty and heard his plea and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD was God.14 Afterward he built an outer wall for the city of David west of Gihon, in the valley, and for the entrance into the Fish Gate, and carried it around Ophel, and raised it to a very great height. He also put commanders of the army in all the fortified cities in Judah.15 And he took away the foreign gods and the idol from the house of the LORD, and all the altars that he had built on the mountain of the house of the LORD and in Jerusalem, and he threw them outside of the city.16 He also restored the altar of the LORD and offered on it sacrifices of peace offerings and of thanksgiving, and he commanded Judah to serve the LORD, the God of Israel.17 Nevertheless, the people still sacrificed at the high places, but only to the LORD their God.18 Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh, and his prayer to his God, and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, behold, they are in the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.19 And his prayer, and how God was moved by his entreaty, and all his sin and his faithlessness, and the sites on which he built high places and set up the Asherim and the images, before he humbled himself, behold, they are written in the Chronicles of the Seers.20 So Manasseh slept with his fathers, and they buried him in his house, and Amon his son reigned in his place.21 Amon was twenty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned two years in Jerusalem.22 And he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, as Manasseh his father had done. Amon sacrificed to all the images that Manasseh his father had made, and served them.23 And he did not humble himself before the LORD, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself, but this Amon incurred guilt more and more.24 And his servants conspired against him and put him to death in his house.25 But the people of the land struck down all those who had conspired against King Amon. And the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his place.
Who is God like?
Thinking & Understanding
Manasseh succeeded Hezekiah as king and revived all the idolatrous practices Hezekiah had abolished; he even set up altars to idols within the house of God. Because of Manasseh, the people of Judah were also led into great evil (vv. 1-9). Manasseh ignored God's warnings and was eventually driven out of the land, just as God had foretold. However, when Manasseh finally sought God and repented, the Lord forgave him and restored him despite his grievous sins. Next, his son Amon, on the other hand, followed in his father’s evil ways but did not repent. In the end, Amon was assassinated by his own treacherous servants (vv. 10-25).

Who is God?
Vv. 12-13 No matter how great the sin, if you repent humbly, God will forgive you—just as he forgave Manasseh. God forgave the thief on the cross (Luke 23:40-43) and showed mercy to Paul, who considered himself the chief of sinners (1 Tim. 1:15-16). For all who repent, God's grace always outweighs their sins.
아무리 악한 잘못이라도 겸손히 회개하면 용서하십니다. 하나님은 므낫세도 용서하셨습니다. 진정으로 뉘우친다면, 하나님은 십자가에 달린 강도(눅 23:40-43)도 용서하시고, 죄인의 괴수(딤전 1:15-6)에게도 은혜를 베푸십니다. 회개하는 자에게는 언제나 죄보다 하나님의 은혜가 큽니다.
What lesson is God teaching me?
Vv. 14-17 Those who have returned by grace must live in ongoing, careful repentance. Like Manasseh, who returned from exile in Babylon, we too have been restored from sin and death by God's grace. Like Manasseh, who corrected his mistakes, we are called to repent and walk the path of righteousness and life. The deeper our understanding of the amazing grace we have received, the clearer we will see the sins we need to turn away from.
은혜로 돌아온 자는 돌이키며 살아야 합니다. 바빌론에서 돌아온 므낫세처럼 우리도 하나님의 은혜로 죄와 사망에서 돌아왔습니다. 그렇다면 자기 잘못을 바로잡은 므낫세처럼 우리도 앞으로 정의와 생명의 길로 가야 합니다. 받은 은혜가 크고 깨달은 은혜가 많을수록 돌이켜야 할 것이 많이 보일 것입니다.

Dear God, grant us humble hearts so that we may continually turn back to you. Continue to restore us, drawing us even closer to your presence.
