친히 나무에 달려 그 몸으로 우리 죄를 담당하셨으니 이는 우리로 죄에 대하여 죽고 의에 대하여 살게 하려 하심이라 그가 채찍에 맞음으로 너희는 나음을 얻었나니 (베드로전서 2:24)
공과금이 놀랄 정도로 많이 부과되는 일은 흔히 있을 수 있지만, 노스캐롤라이나에 사는 키런 힐리는 받은 사람의 심장을 멈출만한 수도세 고지서를 받았습니다. 무려 1억불(1,100억원)짜리 고지서였지요! 분명 지난달에 그만큼의 물을 쓰지 않았기에 힐리는 농담조로 수도요금을 할부로 내도 되는지를 물었답니다.
1억불의 빚은 감당하기 힘든 짐임에 틀림없습니다. 그러나 우리가 감당해야 할 측량할 수 없는 죄의 짐에 비하면 이 빚은 아주 미약합니다. 우리 자신의 죄의 무게와 그 대가를 스스로 짊어지려 할 때 우리는 매우 힘들어지고 죄책감과 부끄러움으로 갈등하게 됩니다. 솔직히 말하자면 우리는 이 짐을 전혀 감당할 수 없습니다.
그리고 우리에게는 결코 그 짐을 감당해야할 이유가 없습니다. 베드로가 믿는 자들에게 상기시켜 주었듯이 죄 없으신 하나님의 아들, 오직 예수님만이 우리 죄의 무거운 짐과 그로 말미암은 힘든 결과를 감당하실 수 있습니다(벧전 2:24). 주님은 십자가의 죽음으로 우리의 모든 죄를 담당하고 우리에게 용서를 베풀어주셨습니다. 주님이 우리의 짐을 대신 지심으로 우리가 마땅히 받아야 할 벌을 받지 않게 된 것입니다.
두려움이나 죄책감 속에 살거나 우리에게 “물려 준 헛된 행실에서”(1:18) 사는 대신, 우리는 사랑과 자유의 새로운 삶을 누릴 수 있습니다(22-23절).
• 주님, 가끔은 저희의 죄와 부끄러움이 너무나 무겁게 느껴집니다. 주님께서 그 모든 것을 담당하셔서 우리를 자유케 하셨다는 것을 깨달아서, 우리의 과거와 그 고통을 주님께 맡기고 주님의 평안을 누리게 도와주소서.
* 예수님이 우리 죄의 짐을 담당하셨기에 우리는 축복의 삶을 살 수 있다.

He Carried Our Burden [1 Peter 1:18 - 1:25] - hymn 298
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. (1Peter 2:24)
It’s not unusual for utility bills to be surprisingly high. But Kieran Healy of North Carolina received a water bill that would make your heart stop. The notification said that he owed 100 million dollars! Confident he hadn't used that much water the previous month, Healy jokingly asked if he could pay the bill in installments.
Owing a 100-million-dollar debt would be an overwhelming burden, but that pales in comparison to the real— and immeasurable—burden sin causes us to carry. Attempting to carry the burden and consequences of our own sins ultimately leaves us feeling tired and riddled with guilt and shame. The truth is we are incapable of carrying this load. And we were never meant to. As Peter reminded believers, only Jesus, the sinless Son of God, could carry the heavy burden of our sin and its weighty consequences (1 PETER 2:24). In His death on the cross, Jesus took all our wrongdoing on Himself and offered us His forgiveness. Because He carried our burden, we don’t have to suffer the punishment we deserve.
Instead of living in fear or guilt, the “empty way of life handed down to” us (1:18), we can enjoy a new life of love and freedom (VV. 22–23). MARVIN WILLIAMS

Help us to release our past and its pain to You and experience Your peace, knowing You have carried it all and have set us free.
* Jesus carried the burden of our sin so He could give us the blessing of life.

19. but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
20. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.
21. Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.
22. Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.
23. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
24. For, "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,
25. but the word of the Lord stands forever." And this is the word that was preached to you.
