열왕기상은 북왕국 이스라엘의 악한 왕 아합의 죽음으로 끝났습니다. 열왕기하는 아버지 아합의 지독한 악행을 그대로 답습하는 아하시야의 이야기로 시작합니다. 

[ 열왕기하 1:1 - 1:12 ] (찬송523장)

1아합이 죽은 후에 모압이 이스라엘을 배반하였더라 2아하시야가 사마리아에 있는 그의 다락 난간에서 떨어져 병들매 사자를 보내며 그들에게 이르되 가서 에그론의 신 바알세붑에게 이 병이 낫겠나 물어 보라 하니라

 3여호와의 사자가 디셉 사람 엘리야에게 이르되 너는 일어나 올라가서 사마리아 왕의 사자를 만나 그에게 이르기를 이스라엘에 하나님이 없어서 너희가 에그론의 신 바알세붑에게 물으러 가느냐 4그러므로 여호와의 말씀이 네가 올라간 침상에서 내려오지 못할지라 네가 반드시 죽으리라 하셨다 하라 엘리야가 이에 가니라 5사자들이 왕에게 돌아오니 왕이 그들에게 이르되 너희는 어찌하여 돌아왔느냐 하니 6그들이 말하되 한 사람이 올라와서 우리를 만나 이르되 너희는 너희를 보낸 왕에게로 돌아가서 그에게 고하기를 여호와의 말씀이 이스라엘에 하나님이 없어서 네가 에그론의 신 바알세붑에게 물으려고 보내느냐 그러므로 네가 올라간 침상에서 내려오지 못할지라 네가 반드시 죽으리라 하셨다 하라 하더이다 7왕이 그들에게 이르되 올라와서 너희를 만나 이 말을 너희에게 한 그 사람은 어떤 사람이더냐 8그들이 그에게 대답하되 그는 털이 많은 사람인데 허리에 가죽 띠를 띠었더이다 하니 왕이 이르되 그는 디셉 사람 엘리야로다

 9이에 오십부장과 그의 군사 오십 명을 엘리야에게로 보내매 그가 엘리야에게로 올라가 본즉 산 꼭대기에 앉아 있는지라 그가 엘리야에게 이르되 하나님의 사람이여 왕의 말씀이 내려오라 하셨나이다 10엘리야가 오십부장에게 대답하여 이르되 내가 만일 하나님의 사람이면 불이 하늘에서 내려와 너와 너의 오십 명을 사를지로다 하매 불이 곧 하늘에서 내려와 그와 그의 군사 오십 명을 살랐더라 11왕이 다시 다른 오십부장과 그의 군사 오십 명을 엘리야에게로 보내니 그가 엘리야에게 말하여 이르되 하나님의 사람이여 왕의 말씀이 속히 내려오라 하셨나이다 하니 12엘리야가 그들에게 대답하여 이르되 내가 만일 하나님의 사람이면 불이 하늘에서 내려와 너와 너의 오십 명을 사를지로다 하매 하나님의 불이 곧 하늘에서 내려와 그와 그의 군사 오십 명을 살랐더라

[ 2 Kings 1:1 - 1:12 ]

1After the death of Ahab, Moab rebelled against Israel.2 Now Ahaziah fell through the lattice in his upper chamber in Samaria, and lay sick; so he sent messengers, telling them, “Go, inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover from this sickness.”3 But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say to them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?4 Now therefore thus says the LORD, You shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.’” So Elijah went.5 The messengers returned to the king, and he said to them, “Why have you returned?”6 And they said to him, “There came a man to meet us, and said to us, ‘Go back to the king who sent you, and say to him, Thus says the LORD, Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.’”7 He said to them, “What kind of man was he who came to meet you and told you these things?”8 They answered him, “He wore a garment of hair, with a belt of leather about his waist.” And he said, “It is Elijah the Tishbite.”9 Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty men with his fifty. He went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill, and said to him, “O man of God, the king says, ‘Come down.’”10 But Elijah answered the captain of fifty, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty.” Then fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.11 Again the king sent to him another captain of fifty men with his fifty. And he answered and said to him, “O man of God, this is the king's order, ‘Come down quickly!’”12 But Elijah answered them, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty.” Then the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.
