아하시야가 세 번째로 보낸 오십부장은 엘리야에게 자비를 구하여 생명을 보존합니다. 엘리야는 직접 왕에게 죽음을 선고하고, 그 말씀대로 왕은 후사 없이 죽습니다.

13왕이 세 번째 오십부장과 그의 군사 오십 명을 보낸지라 셋째 오십부장이 올라가서 엘리야 앞에 이르러 그의 무릎을 꿇어 엎드려 간구하여 이르되 하나님의 사람이여 원하건대 나의 생명과 당신의 종인 이 오십 명의 생명을 당신은 귀히 보소서 14불이 하늘에서 내려와 전번의 오십부장 둘과 그의 군사 오십 명을 살랐거니와 나의 생명을 당신은 귀히 보소서 하매

 15여호와의 사자가 엘리야에게 이르되 너는 그를 두려워하지 말고 함께 내려가라 하신지라 엘리야가 곧 일어나 그와 함께 내려와 왕에게 이르러 16말하되 여호와의 말씀이 네가 사자를 보내 에그론의 신 바알세붑에게 물으려 하니 이스라엘에 그의 말을 물을 만한 하나님이 안 계심이냐 그러므로 네가 그 올라간 침상에서 내려오지 못할지라 네가 반드시 죽으리라 하셨다 하니라

 17왕이 엘리야가 전한 여호와의 말씀대로 죽고 그가 아들이 없으므로 여호람이 그를 대신하여 왕이 되니 유다 왕 여호사밧의 아들 여호람의 둘째 해였더라 18아하시야가 행한 그 남은 사적은 모두 이스라엘 왕 역대지략에 기록되지 아니하였느냐

13Again the king sent the captain of a third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up and came and fell on his knees before Elijah and entreated him, “O man of God, please let my life, and the life of these fifty servants of yours, be precious in your sight.14 Behold, fire came down from heaven and consumed the two former captains of fifty men with their fifties, but now let my life be precious in your sight.”15 Then the angel of the LORD said to Elijah, “Go down with him; do not be afraid of him.” So he arose and went down with him to the king16 and said to him, “Thus says the LORD, ‘Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron—is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of his word?—therefore you shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.’”17 So he died according to the word of the LORD that Elijah had spoken. Jehoram became king in his place in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, because Ahaziah had no son.18 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
