에돔 땅을 통과할 수 있게 해달라는 요청을 에돔 왕이 거절하자, 이스라엘은 우회하기로 선택합니다. 한편 아론은 호르산에서 제사장직을 넘겨주고 눈을 감습니다.

14모세가 가데스에서 에돔 왕에게 사신을 보내며 이르되 당신의 형제 이스라엘의 말에 우리가 당한 모든 고난을 당신도 아시거니와 15우리 조상들이 애굽으로 내려갔으므로 우리가 애굽에 오래 거주하였더니 애굽인이 우리 조상들과 우리를 학대하였으므로 16우리가 여호와께 부르짖었더니 우리 소리를 들으시고 천사를 보내사 우리를 애굽에서 인도하여 내셨나이다 이제 우리가 당신의 변방 모퉁이 한 성읍 가데스에 있사오니 17청하건대 우리에게 당신의 땅을 지나가게 하소서 우리가 밭으로나 포도원으로 지나가지 아니하고 우물물도 마시지 아니하고 왕의 큰길로만 지나가고 당신의 지경에서 나가기까지 왼쪽으로나 오른쪽으로나 치우치지 아니하리이다 한다고 하라 하였더니

 18에돔 왕이 대답하되 너는 우리 가운데로 지나가지 못하리라 내가 칼을 들고 나아가 너를 대적할까 하노라 19이스라엘 자손이 이르되 우리가 큰길로만 지나가겠고 우리나 우리 짐승이 당신의 물을 마시면 그 값을 낼 것이라 우리가 도보로 지나갈 뿐인즉 아무 일도 없으리이다 하나 20그는 이르되 너는 지나가지 못하리라 하고 에돔 왕이 많은 백성을 거느리고 나와서 강한 손으로 막으니 21에돔 왕이 이같이 이스라엘이 그의 영토로 지나감을 용납하지 아니하므로 이스라엘이 그들에게서 돌이키니라

 22이스라엘 자손 곧 온 회중이 가데스를 떠나 호르 산에 이르렀더니 23여호와께서 에돔 땅 변경 호르 산에서 모세와 아론에게 말씀하시니라 이르시되 24아론은 그 조상들에게로 돌아가고 내가 이스라엘 자손에게 준 땅에는 들어가지 못하리니 이는 너희가 므리바 물에서 내 말을 거역한 까닭이니라 25너는 아론과 그의 아들 엘르아살을 데리고 호르 산에 올라 26아론의 옷을 벗겨 그의 아들 엘르아살에게 입히라 아론은 거기서 죽어 그 조상에게로 돌아가리라 27모세가 여호와의 명령을 따라 그들과 함께 회중의 목전에서 호르 산에 오르니라 28모세가 아론의 옷을 벗겨 그의 아들 엘르아살에게 입히매 아론이 그 산 꼭대기에서 죽으니라 모세와 엘르아살이 산에서 내려오니 29온 회중 곧 이스라엘 온 족속이 아론이 죽은 것을 보고 그를 위하여 삼십 일 동안 애곡하였더라

14Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom: “Thus says your brother Israel: You know all the hardship that we have met:15 how our fathers went down to Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time. And the Egyptians dealt harshly with us and our fathers.16 And when we cried to the LORD, he heard our voice and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. And here we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory.17 Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or vineyard, or drink water from a well. We will go along the King’s Highway. We will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left until we have passed through your territory.”18 But Edom said to him, “You shall not pass through, lest I come out with the sword against you.”19 And the people of Israel said to him, “We will go up by the highway, and if we drink of your water, I and my livestock, then I will pay for it. Let me only pass through on foot, nothing more.”20 But he said, “You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against them with a large army and with a strong force.21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory, so Israel turned away from him.22 And they journeyed from Kadesh, and the people of Israel, the whole congregation, came to Mount Hor.23 And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor, on the border of the land of Edom,24 “Let Aaron be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land that I have given to the people of Israel, because you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah.25 Take Aaron and Eleazar his son and bring them up to Mount Hor.26 And strip Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son. And Aaron shall be gathered to his people and shall die there.”27 Moses did as the LORD commanded. And they went up Mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.28 And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son. And Aaron died there on the top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.29 And when all the congregation saw that Aaron had perished, all the house of Israel wept for Aaron thirty days.
