마귀의 시험을 연상케 하는 종교지도자들의 공세가 시작됩니다. 먼저 바리새인들이 납세 문제로 시험하지만 예수님은 지혜로운 대답으로 도리어 그들을 곤란하게 하십니다.

15이에 바리새인들이 가서 어떻게 하면 예수를 말의 올무에 걸리게 할까 상의하고 16자기 제자들을 헤롯 당원들과 함께 예수께 보내어 말하되 선생님이여 우리가 아노니 당신은 참되시고 진리로 하나님의 도를 가르치시며 아무도 꺼리는 일이 없으시니 이는 사람을 외모로 보지 아니하심이니이다 17그러면 당신의 생각에는 어떠한지 우리에게 이르소서 가이사에게 세금을 바치는 것이 옳으니이까 옳지 아니하니이까 하니

 18예수께서 그들의 악함을 아시고 이르시되 외식하는 자들아 어찌하여 나를 시험하느냐 19세금 낼 돈을 내게 보이라 하시니 데나리온 하나를 가져왔거늘 20예수께서 말씀하시되 이 형상과 이 글이 누구의 것이냐 21이르되 가이사의 것이니이다 이에 이르시되 그런즉 가이사의 것은 가이사에게, 하나님의 것은 하나님께 바치라 하시니 22그들이 이 말씀을 듣고 놀랍게 여겨 예수를 떠나가니라

19절) 은화인 데나리온은 앞면에 디베료(티베리우스) 황제의 흉상과 ‘신의 지존하신 아들, 디베료 황제’라는 말이, 뒷면에는 황제의 아내 리비아의 좌상과 대제사장이라는 말이 새겨져 있었다.

15Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words.16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances.17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites?19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius.20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?”21 They said, “Caesar's.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.”22 When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.
