예수의 기적적인 활동 소식을 들은 헤롯은 이는 분명히 자신이 참수한 요한이 살아나 그 안에서 권능을 행하는 것이라 여기며 두려워합니다.

[ 마태복음 14:1 - 14:12 ] (찬송516장)

1그 때에 분봉 왕 헤롯이 예수의 소문을 듣고 2그 신하들에게 이르되 이는 침례 요한이라 그가 죽은 자 가운데서 살아났으니 그러므로 이런 능력이 그 속에서 역사하는도다 하더라

 3전에 헤롯이 그 동생 빌립의 아내 헤로디아의 일로 요한을 잡아 결박하여 옥에 가두었으니 4이는 요한이 헤롯에게 말하되 당신이 그 여자를 차지한 것이 옳지 않다 하였음이라

 5헤롯이 요한을 죽이려 하되 무리가 그를 선지자로 여기므로 그들을 두려워하더니 6마침 헤롯의 생일이 되어 헤로디아의 딸이 연석 가운데서 춤을 추어 헤롯을 기쁘게 하니 7헤롯이 맹세로 그에게 무엇이든지 달라는 대로 주겠다고 약속하거늘 8그가 제 어머니의 시킴을 듣고 이르되 침례 요한의 머리를 소반에 얹어 여기서 내게 주소서 하니 9왕이 근심하나 자기가 맹세한 것과 그 함께 앉은 사람들 때문에 주라 명하고 10사람을 보내어 옥에서 요한의 목을 베어 11그 머리를 소반에 얹어서 그 소녀에게 주니 그가 자기 어머니에게로 가져가니라

 12요한의 제자들이 와서 시체를 가져다가 장사하고 가서 예수께 아뢰니라

[ Matthew 14:1 - 14:12 ]

1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus,2 and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.”3 For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,4 because John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”5 And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.6 But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod,7 so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.8 Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.”9 And the king was sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given.10 He sent and had John beheaded in the prison,11 and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.12 And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and they went and told Jesus. 

Who is God like?

When Herod heard the news of Jesus’ accomplishments, he remembered John and became burdened by guilt. Herod had been seduced by Herodias, his brother’s wife and the daughter of Herod II, and abandoned his wife to marry her. When John rebuked him for this, Herod placed him in jail. Although he had wanted to kill John, he refrained for fear of losing the people’s favour. But on his birthday, because of words he had uttered while drunk, he ordered for John to be beheaded in an attempt to save face (vv. 1-12). 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 1- 2 A righteous person in death gained victory over the wicked person who had killed him. Although the wicked may use their power to hide their evils and crush righteousness, all this does is cast a shadow of fear in their hearts. Evil cannot defeat righteousness. Jesus, who executed God’s justice through his death, vividly revealed this truth. Let’s not fear the power of the wicked or give up on the righteous path.  

Vv. 3,10-11 Suffering follows the lives of the righteous. This is because they expose the unrighteousness of the world through their words and actions. The world sneers at and persecutes righteous people who do not align themselves with the unrighteousness of the world. The world does not leave in peace those who rebuke it for its unrighteousness. However, this is the path of the cross that must be walked by the disciples who follow Jesus (5:10).  

Prayer

Lord, help me to live as a righteous person who has faith that justice will overcome unrighteousness.
