경찰관 미이오의 마음, Officer Miglio's Heart [ 마태복음 18:1 - 18:10 ] - 찬송가 장
삼가 이 소자 중에 하나도 업신여기지 말라 너희에게 말하노니 저희 천사들이 하늘에서 하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 얼굴을 항상 뵈옵느니라.(마태복음 18:10)

경찰서로 돌아온 미이오 순경은 너무나 지쳐 벽에 기대섰습니다. 그는 가정폭력 신고를 받고 나가 한 나절을 시달리고 돌아왔습니다. 그 사건으로 여인과 동거하던 남자는 구류되고 어린 딸은 응급실로 실려갔으며 엄마는 어쩌다 이렇게 되었는지 어쩔 줄 몰라 했습니다. 이 사건 때문에 그 젊은 경찰관은 오래도록 힘들어 했습니다.

그의 상사가 “빅, 자네도 어쩔 수 없었던 일이잖나.”라며 위로의 말을 해 주었지만 그 말은 공허하게만 들렸습니다. 어떤 경찰관들은 퇴근과 동시에 직장에서 있었던 일을 다 잊는 것 같지만, 빅 미이오는 그러질 못합니다. 이번처럼 힘든 경우는 더욱 그렇습니다.

경찰관 미이오의 마음은 남의 고통을 함께 아파하시는 예수님의 마음을 보여줍니다. 예수님의 제자들이 주님께 와서 "천국에서는 누가 크니이까"(마태복음 18:1)라고 물었습니다. 예수님은 한 어린아이를 데려오라 하시고는 제자들에게 "너희가 돌이켜 어린아이들과 같이 되지 아니하면 결단코 천국에 들어가지 못하리라"(3절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리고 누구든지 어린아이에게 해를 가하는 자들에게 준엄한 경고를 하셨습니다(6절). 사실 어린아이들은 예수님께 아주 특별했습니다. 주님은 "저희 천사들이 하늘에서 하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 얼굴을 항상 뵈옵느니라"(10절)라고 말씀하셨습니다.

그런데 어린아이들을 향한 예수님의 사랑이 우리 모두를 향한 그의 사랑과 연결되어 있다는 것이 얼마나 위안이 되는지 모릅니다! 그래서 예수님이 우리를 어린아이 같은 믿음으로 주님의 아들과 딸이 되라고 부르시는 것입니다.

* 주님, 우리가 어린아이와 같은 믿음으로 주님께 나아갈 때 주님이 아이들을 사랑하시는 것처럼 우리도 아이들을 사랑할 수 있도록
늘 일깨워주소서.

* 이 땅의 가족은 우리를 실망시킬지라도 우리 하나님 아버지는 결코 그러지 않으신다.

1. 그 때에 제자들이 예수께 나아와 이르되 천국에서는 누가 크니이까
2. 예수께서 한 어린 아이를 불러 그들 가운데 세우시고
3. 이르시되 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희가 돌이켜 어린 아이들과 같이 되지 아니하면 결단코 천국에 들어가지 못하리라
4. 그러므로 누구든지 이 어린 아이와 같이 자기를 낮추는 사람이 천국에서 큰 자니라
5. 또 누구든지 내 이름으로 이런 어린 아이 하나를 영접하면 곧 나를 영접함이니
6. 누구든지 나를 믿는 이 작은 자 중 하나를 실족하게 하면 차라리 연자 맷돌이 그 목에 달려서 깊은 바다에 빠뜨려지는 것이 나으니라
7. 실족하게 하는 일들이 있음으로 말미암아 세상에 화가 있도다 실족하게 하는 일이 없을 수는 없으나 실족하게 하는 그 사람에게는 화가 있도다
8. 만일 네 손이나 네 발이 너를 범죄하게 하거든 찍어 내버리라 장애인이나 다리 저는 자로 영생에 들어가는 것이 두 손과 두 발을 가지고 영원한 불에 던져지는 것보다 나으니라
9. 만일 네 눈이 너를 범죄하게 하거든 빼어 내버리라 한 눈으로 영생에 들어가는 것이 두 눈을 가지고 지옥 불에 던져지는 것보다 나으니라

Officer Miglio’s Heart [ Matthew 18:1 - 18:10 ] - hymn
Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.(Matthew 18:10)

Back at the police station, Officer Miglio slumped wearily against a wall. A domestic violence call had just con- sumed half his shift. Its aftermath left a boyfriend in custody, a young daughter in the emergency room, and a shaken mother wondering how it had come to this. This call
would wear on the young officer for a long time.
“Nothing you could do, Vic,” said his sergeant sympathetically. But the words rang hollow. Some police officers seem able to leave their work at work. Not Vic Miglio. Not the tough cases like this one. Officer Miglio’s heart reflects the compassion of Jesus. Christ’s disciples had just come to Him with a question: “Who, then, is the greatest in the king- dom of heaven?” (MATTHEW 18:1). Calling a small child to Him, He told His disciples,
“Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (V. 3). Then He gave a stern warning to anyone who would harm a child (V. 6). In fact, chil- dren are so special to Him that Jesus told us, “Their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven” (V. 10).
How comforting, then, that Jesus’s love for children is con- nected to His love for us all! That’s why He invites us, through childlike faith, to become His sons and daughters. TIM GUSTAFSON

* Remind us always, Lord, to love children as You love them, even as we come to You with the trusting faith of a small child.

* Our earthly families may fail us, but our heavenly Father never will.

1. At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

3. And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

8. Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.
9. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.
10. Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.
