우리가 얻은 것 [ 시편 37:1 - 37:27 ] - 찬송가 440장

내가 어려서부터 늙기까지 의인이 버림을 당하거나 그의 자손이 걸식함을 보지 못하였도다
시편 37:25

존 에프 번스는 〈뉴욕 타임스〉에서 세계적인 사건들을 취재하며 40년을 보냈습니다. 2015년에 은퇴한 후 쓴 글에서, 번스는 암으로 죽어가는 친한 친구였던 동료 기자가 했던 말을 회상했습니다. “절대 잊지 말게, 중요한 것은 자네가 얼마나 멀리 여행했느냐가 아니라 무엇을 얻고 돌아왔느냐 라는 것을.”
시편 37편은 다윗이 목자에서 군인, 그리고 왕이 되었던 자신의 인생여정에서 ‘얻었던’ 것을 나열한 것으로 보입니다. 이 시는 악인과 의인을 대조하면서 하나님을 신뢰하는 자들을 보여주는 2행 대구 형식으로 되어 있습니다.
“악을 행하는 자들 때문에 불평하지 말며 불의를 행하는 자들을 시기하지 말지어다 그들은 풀과 같이 속히 베임을 당할 것이며 푸른 채소 같이 쇠잔할 것임이로다”(1-2절).
“여호와께서 사람의 걸음을 정하시고 그의 길을 기뻐하시나니 그는 넘어지나 아주 엎드러지지 아니함은 여호와께서 그의 손으로 붙드심이로다”(23-24절).
“내가 어려서부터 늙기까지 의인이 버림을 당하거나 그의 자손이 걸식함을 보지 못하였도다”(25절).
살아오면서 우리가 겪은 경험을 통해 하나님께서 무엇을 가르쳐주셨습니까? 우리는 하나님의 사랑과 신실하심을 어떤 방법으로 경험했습니까? 주님의 사랑이 어떤 식으로 우리의 삶을 빚으셨습니까?
중요한 것은 우리가 얼마나 먼 곳을 두루 다니며 살았느냐가 아니라 무엇을 얻었는가 하는 것입니다.

• 사랑하는 주님, 제 삶 가운데 동행해주셔서 감사합니다.
주님의 신실하심을 기억하도록 도와주소서.

해를 거듭할수록 주님의 신실하심은 커져만 간다.

1. 악을 행하는 자들 때문에 불평하지 말며 불의를 행하는 자들을 시기하지 말지어다
2. 그들은 풀과 같이 속히 베임을 당할 것이며 푸른 채소 같이 쇠잔할 것임이로다
3. 여호와를 의뢰하고 선을 행하라 땅에 머무는 동안 그의 성실을 먹을 거리로 삼을지어다
4. 또 여호와를 기뻐하라 그가 네 마음의 소원을 네게 이루어 주시리로다
5. 네 길을 여호와께 맡기라 그를 의지하면 그가 이루시고
6. 네 의를 빛 같이 나타내시며 네 공의를 정오의 빛 같이 하시리로다

What We Bring Back

I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.
Psalm 37:25

John F. Burns spent forty years covering world events for The New York Times. In an article written after his retirement in 2015, Burns recalled the words of a close friend and fellow journalist who was dying of cancer. “Never forget,” his colleague said, “It’s not how far you’ve traveled; it’s what you’ve brought back.”
Psalm 37 could be considered David’s list of what he “brought back” from his journey of life, from shepherd to soldier and king. The psalm is a series of couplets contrasting the wicked with the righteous, and affirming those who trust the Lord.
“Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither”(vv. 1–2).
“The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand”(vv. 23–24).
“I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread”(v. 25).
From our experiences in life, what has God taught us? How have we experienced His faithfulness and love? In what ways has the Lord’s love shaped our lives?
It’s not how far we’ve traveled in life, but what we’ve brought back that counts. David McCasland

• Dear Lord, thank You for walking with me throughout my life. Help me to remember Your faithfulness.

As the years add up, God’s faithfulness keeps multiplying.

1. Psalm 37 Of David. Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong;
2. for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away.
3. Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
4. Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.
5. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this:
6. He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.
23. If the LORD delights in a man's way, he makes his steps firm;
24. though he stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.
25. I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.
26. They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be blessed.
27. Turn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever.
