엘가나의 가족 소개 

1에브라임 산지 라마다임소빔에 에브라임 사람 엘가나라 하는 사람이 있었으니 그는 여로함의 아들이요 엘리후의 손자요 도후의 증손이요 숩의 현손이더라 2그에게 두 아내가 있었으니 한 사람의 이름은 한나요 한 사람의 이름은 브닌나라 브닌나에게는 자식이 있고 한나에게는 자식이 없었더라

 한나의 고통

 3이 사람이 매년 자기 성읍에서 나와서 실로에 올라가서 만군의 여호와께 예배하며 제사를 드렸는데 엘리의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스가 여호와의 제사장으로 거기에 있었더라 4엘가나가 제사를 드리는 날에는 제물의 분깃을 그의 아내 브닌나와 그의 모든 자녀에게 주고 5한나에게는 갑절을 주니 이는 그를 사랑함이라 그러나 여호와께서 그에게 임신하지 못하게 하시니 6여호와께서 그에게 임신하지 못하게 하시므로 그의 적수인 브닌나가 그를 심히 격분하게 하여 괴롭게 하더라 7매년 한나가 여호와의 집에 올라갈 때마다 남편이 그같이 하매 브닌나가 그를 격분시키므로 그가 울고 먹지 아니하니 8그의 남편 엘가나가 그에게 이르되 한나여 어찌하여 울며 어찌하여 먹지 아니하며 어찌하여 그대의 마음이 슬프냐 내가 그대에게 열 아들보다 낫지 아니하냐 하니라

 한나의 기도 

9그들이 실로에서 먹고 마신 후에 한나가 일어나니 그 때에 제사장 엘리는 여호와의 전 문설주 곁 의자에 앉아 있었더라 10한나가 마음이 괴로워서 여호와께 기도하고 통곡하며 11서원하여 이르되 만군의 여호와여 만일 주의 여종의 고통을 돌보시고 나를 기억하사 주의 여종을 잊지 아니하시고 주의 여종에게 아들을 주시면 내가 그의 평생에 그를 여호와께 드리고 삭도를 그의 머리에 대지 아니하겠나이다 12그가 여호와 앞에 오래 기도하는 동안에 엘리가 그의 입을 주목한즉 13한나가 속으로 말하매 입술만 움직이고 음성은 들리지 아니하므로 엘리는 그가 취한 줄로 생각한지라 14엘리가 그에게 이르되 네가 언제까지 취하여 있겠느냐 포도주를 끊으라 하니 15한나가 대답하여 이르되 내 주여 그렇지 아니하니이다 나는 마음이 슬픈 여자라 포도주나 독주를 마신 것이 아니요 여호와 앞에 내 심정을 통한 것뿐이오니 16당신의 여종을 악한 여자로 여기지 마옵소서 내가 지금까지 말한 것은 나의 원통함과 격분됨이 많기 때문이니이다 하는지라 17엘리가 대답하여 이르되 평안히 가라 이스라엘의 하나님이 네가 기도하여 구한 것을 허락하시기를 원하노라 하니 18이르되 당신의 여종이 당신께 은혜 입기를 원하나이다 하고 가서 먹고 얼굴에 다시는 근심 빛이 없더라

[ 1 Samuel 1:1 - 1:18 ]

1There was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim of the hill country of Ephraim whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephrathite.2 He had two wives. The name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other, Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.3 Now this man used to go up year by year from his city to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests of the LORD.4 On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters.5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the LORD had closed her womb.6 And her rival used to provoke her grievously to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb.7 So it went on year by year. As often as she went up to the house of the LORD, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat.8 And Elkanah, her husband, said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?”9 After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah rose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the LORD.10 She was deeply distressed and prayed to the LORD and wept bitterly.11 And she vowed a vow and said, “O LORD of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head.”12 As she continued praying before the LORD, Eli observed her mouth.13 Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli took her to be a drunken woman.14 And Eli said to her, “How long will you go on being drunk? Put your wine away from you.”15 But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the LORD.16 Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.”17 Then Eli answered, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have made to him.”18 And she said, “Let your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

During the era of Judges, Israel suffered externally from the attacks of enemies and internally from moral corruption. Their reality was bleak like the reality that befell Hannah, who had no children. God’s choice to make Hannah barren was not unconnected to Israel’s spiritual state. The mocking of Peninnah, who had many children, pushed Hannah to the edge of despair (vv. 1-8). However, she eventually rose from her anguish and confronted God. She prayed to God, the Lord of hosts, by faith. As Hannah turned her face towards God, the sadness from it was lifted and was replaced with the light of hope and joy (vv. 9-18).

Who is God?

Vv. 5- 6, 11 God is sovereign over all events in life. Although he sometimes gives us suffering, that suffering is only a part of a much greater plan. For the people of faith, suffering is merely like labour contractions, pain that is followed by the joy of birth. What we need most amid suffering is faith.

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 17- 18 The response to a prayer offered in faith is peace. Through prayer, God takes on our personal problems as his own and bestows sabbath on our anguished hearts. Let’s pray to God, who intimately knows our situation, for freedom from the despair that is oppressing us.

Lord, help me to endure to the end with trust in you whenever I am confronted by suffering.
