이스라엘과 블레셋의 대치 

1블레셋 사람들이 그들의 군대를 모으고 싸우고자 하여 유다에 속한 소고에 모여 소고와 아세가 사이의 에베스담밈에 진 치매 2사울과 이스라엘 사람들이 모여서 엘라 골짜기에 진 치고 블레셋 사람들을 대하여 전열을 벌였으니 3블레셋 사람들은 이쪽 산에 섰고 이스라엘은 저쪽 산에 섰고 그 사이에는 골짜기가 있었더라

 골리앗의 모욕과 이스라엘의 반응 

4블레셋 사람들의 진영에서 싸움을 돋우는 자가 왔는데 그의 이름은 골리앗이요 가드 사람이라 그의 키는 여섯 규빗 한 뼘이요 5머리에는 놋 투구를 썼고 몸에는 비늘 갑옷을 입었으니 그 갑옷의 무게가 놋 오천 세겔이며 6그의 다리에는 놋 각반을 쳤고 어깨 사이에는 놋 단창을 메었으니 7그 창 자루는 베틀 채 같고 창 날은 철 육백 세겔이며 방패 든 자가 앞서 행하더라 8그가 서서 이스라엘 군대를 향하여 외쳐 이르되 너희가 어찌하여 나와서 전열을 벌였느냐 나는 블레셋 사람이 아니며 너희는 사울의 신복이 아니냐 너희는 한 사람을 택하여 내게로 내려보내라 9그가 나와 싸워서 나를 죽이면 우리가 너희의 종이 되겠고 만일 내가 이겨 그를 죽이면 너희가 우리의 종이 되어 우리를 섬길 것이니라 10그 블레셋 사람이 또 이르되 내가 오늘 이스라엘의 군대를 모욕하였으니 사람을 보내어 나와 더불어 싸우게 하라 한지라 11사울과 온 이스라엘이 블레셋 사람의 이 말을 듣고 놀라 크게 두려워하니라

 전장을 찾아간 다윗 

12다윗은 유다 베들레헴 에브랏 사람 이새라 하는 사람의 아들이었는데 이새는 사울 당시 사람 중에 나이가 많아 늙은 사람으로서 여덟 아들이 있는 중 13그 장성한 세 아들은 사울을 따라 싸움에 나갔으니 싸움에 나간 세 아들의 이름은 장자 엘리압이요 그 다음은 아비나답이요 셋째는 삼마며 14다윗은 막내라 장성한 세 사람은 사울을 따랐고 15다윗은 사울에게로 왕래하며 베들레헴에서 그의 아버지의 양을 칠 때에 16그 블레셋 사람이 사십 일을 조석으로 나와서 몸을 나타내었더라 17이새가 그의 아들 다윗에게 이르되 지금 네 형들을 위하여 이 볶은 곡식 한 에바와 이 떡 열 덩이를 가지고 진영으로 속히 가서 네 형들에게 주고 18이 치즈 열 덩이를 가져다가 그들의 천부장에게 주고 네 형들의 안부를 살피고 증표를 가져오라 19그 때에 사울과 그들과 이스라엘 모든 사람들은 엘라 골짜기에서 블레셋 사람들과 싸우는 중이더라

 골리앗의 조롱을 들은 다윗 

20다윗이 아침에 일찍이 일어나서 양을 양 지키는 자에게 맡기고 이새가 명령한 대로 가지고 가서 진영에 이른즉 마침 군대가 전장에 나와서 싸우려고 고함치며, 21이스라엘과 블레셋 사람들이 전열을 벌이고 양군이 서로 대치하였더라 22다윗이 자기의 짐을 짐 지키는 자의 손에 맡기고 군대로 달려가서 형들에게 문안하고 23그들과 함께 말할 때에 마침 블레셋 사람의 싸움 돋우는 가드 사람 골리앗이라 하는 자가 그 전열에서 나와서 전과 같은 말을 하매 다윗이 들으니라

1Now the Philistines gathered their armies for battle. And they were gathered at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered, and encamped in the Valley of Elah, and drew up in line of battle against the Philistines.3 And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side, with a valley between them.4 And there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.5 He had a helmet of bronze on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze.6 And he had bronze armor on his legs, and a javelin of bronze slung between his shoulders.7 The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron. And his shield-bearer went before him.8 He stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why have you come out to draw up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.9 If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.”10 And the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel this day. Give me a man, that we may fight together.”11 When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.12 Now David was the son of an Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, named Jesse, who had eight sons. In the days of Saul the man was already old and advanced in years.13 The three oldest sons of Jesse had followed Saul to the battle. And the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.14 David was the youngest. The three eldest followed Saul,15 but David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.16 For forty days the Philistine came forward and took his stand, morning and evening.17 And Jesse said to David his son, “Take for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain, and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers.18 Also take these ten cheeses to the commander of their thousand. See if your brothers are well, and bring some token from them.”19 Now Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.20 And David rose early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper and took the provisions and went, as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the encampment as the host was going out to the battle line, shouting the war cry.21 And Israel and the Philistines drew up for battle, army against army.22 And David left the things in charge of the keeper of the baggage and ran to the ranks and went and greeted his brothers.23 As he talked with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines and spoke the same words as before. And David heard him. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

The Philistines charged into the city of Judah and stationed themselves opposite the Israel army. Goliath mocked the Israel army but the men of Israel were too afraid to stand against him due to his enormous stature (vv. 1-11). Meanwhile, David went up to the battlefield to check on the safety of his brothers at his father’s request. The battle had just begun when David entered the battlefield and David overheard the Philistine warrior Goliath mocking the Israel army (vv. 12-23). 

What lesson is God teaching me?

V. 11 Saul, from whom God’s Spirit had departed, became powerless. Once a brave warrior (11:1-11), he was reduced to a useless figurehead who could do nothing against the Philistine army mocking God and Israel. This was the consequence he had brought upon himself as a result of acting like an autonomous king, dismissing God’s voice and pursuing his own greed. 

Vv. 12-16 Efficiency is not the main concern of God’s Kingdom. David had to live an ordinary life until it became God’s appointed time for him to take to the stage. Like this, let’s remember that even though it may sometimes appear as if things are moving slowly and in circles, as long as we are pursuing God’s will, not a single day or moment is being spent in vain. Tomorrow will be the result of faithfully serving the Lord’s will today.

Lord, help me to fight not in a worldly way but your way.
