앞서 첫 언약에 속한 제사 제도의 한계를 지적한 저자는 이제 예수님의 완전한 제사와 그 효과를 설명하고, 새 언약의 중보자이신 예수님의 죽음이 왜 필수적인지 밝힙니다.

예수님의 완전한 제사 

11그리스도께서는 장래 좋은 일의 대제사장으로 오사 손으로 짓지 아니한 것 곧 이 창조에 속하지 아니한 더 크고 온전한 장막으로 말미암아 12염소와 송아지의 피로 하지 아니하고 오직 자기의 피로 영원한 속죄를 이루사 단번에 성소에 들어가셨느니라 13염소와 황소의 피와 및 암송아지의 재를 부정한 자에게 뿌려 그 육체를 정결하게 하여 거룩하게 하거든 14하물며 영원하신 성령으로 말미암아 흠 없는 자기를 하나님께 드린 그리스도의 피가 어찌 너희 양심을 죽은 행실에서 깨끗하게 하고 살아 계신 하나님을 섬기게 하지 못하겠느냐

 새 언약의 중보자 예수님 

 15이로 말미암아 그는 새 언약의 중보자시니 이는 첫 언약 때에 범한 죄에서 속량하려고 죽으사 부르심을 입은 자로 하여금 영원한 기업의 약속을 얻게 하려 하심이라

 언약의 성격 

16유언은 유언한 자가 죽어야 되나니 17유언은 그 사람이 죽은 후에야 유효한즉 유언한 자가 살아 있는 동안에는 효력이 없느니라

 피로 세운 첫 언약 

 18이러므로 첫 언약도 피 없이 세운 것이 아니니 19모세가 율법대로 모든 계명을 온 백성에게 말한 후에 송아지와 염소의 피 및 물과 붉은 양털과 우슬초를 취하여 그 두루마리와 온 백성에게 뿌리며 20이르되 이는 하나님이 너희에게 명하신 언약의 피라 하고 21또한 이와 같이 피를 장막과 섬기는 일에 쓰는 모든 그릇에 뿌렸느니라 22율법을 따라 거의 모든 물건이 피로써 정결하게 되나니 피흘림이 없은즉 사함이 없느니라

11But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation)12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh,14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.15 Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.16 For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established.17 For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive.18 Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood.19 For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,20 saying, “This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.”21 And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship.22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

Thinking & Understanding

Once Jesus ascended to the sanctuary in heaven after his resurrection, the sanctuary on earth no longer became necessary. This is because Jesus, the high priest, entered the Most Holy Place in heaven once for all and cleansed mankind of all sin with the blood he spilled on the cross (vv. 11-14). With the old covenant, which was formed by blood, which symbolises death, the people’s sins could only be cleansed by the blood of an animal. However, the Israelites broke this covenant of blood and went down the path of sin. In response, God chose to give them a new covenant which could never be broken and Jesus began this covenant through his death and the shedding of his blood on the cross (vv. 15-22). 

Who is Jesus?

V. 14 Jesus died to make us holy. The amazing salvation brought about by the offering that Jesus made with his own blood is manifested through the cleansing of our hearts by the help of the Holy Spirit and serving God with our lives. Are you steadily becoming holier? This holiness was achieved by the blood of Jesus. 

V. 15 Jesus died to help us receive the inheritance of a new covenant: salvation. Underneath the old covenant, people failed to receive the promised inheritance and had to face death due to their breaking of the covenant. Under the new covenant, Jesus bore the burden of breaking the law, allowing us to receive the inheritance of the new covenant. We are only able to enjoy and hope in the blessing of salvation because of Jesus, who died in our place.
