[ 레위기 24:1 - 24:23 ] (찬송379장)

등잔불과 진설병 

1여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 2이스라엘 자손에게 명령하여 불을 켜기 위하여 감람을 찧어낸 순결한 기름을 네게로 가져오게 하여 계속해서 등잔불을 켜 둘지며 3아론은 회막안 증거궤 휘장 밖에서 저녁부터 아침까지 여호와 앞에 항상 등잔불을 정리할지니 이는 너희 대대로 지킬 영원한 규례라 4그는 여호와 앞에서 순결한 등잔대 위의 등잔들을 항상 정리할지니라 5너는 고운 가루를 가져다가 떡 열두 개를 굽되 각 덩이를 십분의 이 에바로 하여 6여호와 앞 순결한 상 위에 두 줄로 한 줄에 여섯씩 진설하고 7너는 또 정결한 유향을 그 각 줄 위에 두어 기념물로 여호와께 화제를 삼을 것이며 8안식일마다 이 떡을 여호와 앞에 항상 진설할지니 이는 이스라엘 자손을 위한 것이요 영원한 언약이니라 9이 떡은 아론과 그의 자손에게 돌리고 그들은 그것을 거룩한 곳에서 먹을지니 이는 여호와의 화제 중 그에게 돌리는 것으로서 지극히 거룩함이니라 이는 영원한 규례니라

 하나님의 이름을 모독한 죄와 처벌 

 10이스라엘 자손 중에 그의 어머니가 이스라엘 여인이요 그의 아버지는 애굽 사람인 어떤 사람이 나가서 한 이스라엘 사람과 진영 중에서 싸우다가 11그 이스라엘 여인의 아들이 여호와의 이름을 모독하며 저주하므로 무리가 끌고 모세에게로 가니라 그의 어머니의 이름은 슬로밋이요 단 지파 디브리의 딸이었더라 12그들이 그를 가두고 여호와의 명령을 기다리더니 13여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 14그 저주한 사람을 진영 밖으로 끌어내어 그것을 들은 모든 사람이 그들의 손을 그의 머리에 얹게 하고 온 회중이 돌로 그를 칠지니라

 15너는 이스라엘 자손에게 말하여 이르라 누구든지 그의 하나님을 저주하면 죄를 담당할 것이요 16여호와의 이름을 모독하면 그를 반드시 죽일지니 온 회중이 돌로 그를 칠 것이니라 거류민이든지 본토인이든지 여호와의 이름을 모독하면 그를 죽일지니라 17사람을 쳐죽인 자는 반드시 죽일 것이요 18짐승을 쳐죽인 자는 짐승으로 짐승을 갚을 것이며 19사람이 만일 그의 이웃에게 상해를 입혔으면 그가 행한 대로 그에게 행할 것이니 20상처에는 상처로, 눈에는 눈으로, 이에는 이로 갚을지라 남에게 상해를 입힌 그대로 그에게 그렇게 할 것이며 21짐승을 죽인 자는 그것을 물어 줄 것이요 사람을 죽인 자는 죽일지니 22거류민에게든지 본토인에게든지 그 법을 동일하게 할 것은 나는 너희의 하나님 여호와임이니라 23모세가 이스라엘 자손에게 말하니 그들이 그 저주한 자를 진영 밖으로 끌어내어 돌로 쳤더라 이스라엘 자손이 여호와께서 모세에게 명령하신 대로 행하였더라

[ Leviticus 24:1 - 24:23 ]

1The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,2 “Command the people of Israel to bring you pure oil from beaten olives for the lamp, that a light may be kept burning regularly.3 Outside the veil of the testimony, in the tent of meeting, Aaron shall arrange it from evening to morning before the LORD regularly. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations.4 He shall arrange the lamps on the lampstand of pure gold before the LORD regularly.5 “You shall take fine flour and bake twelve loaves from it; two tenths of an ephah shall be in each loaf.6 And you shall set them in two piles, six in a pile, on the table of pure gold before the LORD.7 And you shall put pure frankincense on each pile, that it may go with the bread as a memorial portion as a food offering to the LORD.8 Every Sabbath day Aaron shall arrange it before the LORD regularly; it is from the people of Israel as a covenant forever.9 And it shall be for Aaron and his sons, and they shall eat it in a holy place, since it is for him a most holy portion out of the LORD’s food offerings, a perpetual due.”10 Now an Israelite woman’s son, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the people of Israel. And the Israelite woman’s son and a man of Israel fought in the camp,11 and the Israelite woman’s son blasphemed the Name, and cursed. Then they brought him to Moses. His mother’s name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan.12 And they put him in custody, till the will of the LORD should be clear to them.13 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,14 “Bring out of the camp the one who cursed, and let all who heard him lay their hands on his head, and let all the congregation stone him.15 And speak to the people of Israel, saying, Whoever curses his God shall bear his sin.16 Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD shall surely be put to death. All the congregation shall stone him. The sojourner as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.17 “Whoever takes a human life shall surely be put to death.18 Whoever takes an animal’s life shall make it good, life for life.19 If anyone injures his neighbor, as he has done it shall be done to him,20 fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; whatever injury he has given a person shall be given to him.21 Whoever kills an animal shall make it good, and whoever kills a person shall be put to death.22 You shall have the same rule for the sojourner and for the native, for I am the LORD your God.”23 So Moses spoke to the people of Israel, and they brought out of the camp the one who had cursed and stoned him with stones. Thus the people of Israel did as the LORD commanded Moses. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

One of the important roles of the priests was ensuring that the lamp in the sanctuary was always lit. The lampstands in the sanctuary symbolised God lighting a lamp to shine on the Israelites to guide them. Across from the lampstands were twelve loaves that represented the twelve tribes of Israel (vv. 1-9). Meanwhile, God commanded the people to stone to death anyone who profaned and cursed God. Then God spoke of the law of retaliation (lex talionis) known as ‘an eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth’ (vv. 10-23). 

Who is God?

Vv. 2-4 God shone a light on the Israelites. By keeping the lamp in the sanctuary alight, God let the people know that he was always protecting and guiding them. The lamp that was used to light the sanctuary is now alight in the sanctuary of our hearts. Are you living following the lamp of God that lights up this dark world? 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 13-16 No one who profaned or cursed God’s name was to be tolerated. Profaning God was an act that destroyed the identity of the covenant community. Sins that deny God must be heavily punished for the sake of the holiness and purity of the community. How is your community doing?

Lord, even though we dwell in the world, help us to live as holy people and as offerings before you.
