형벌로 인하여 죄를 깨닫고 전심으로 회개하면 하나님은 그들과 맺은 언약을 기억하고 회복하실 것이라고 말씀하십니다. 

[ 레위기 26:40 - 26:46 ] (찬송299장)

회복의 약속 

40그들이 나를 거스른 잘못으로 자기의 죄악과 그들의 조상의 죄악을 자복하고 또 그들이 내게 대항하므로 41나도 그들에게 대항하여 내가 그들을 그들의 원수들의 땅으로 끌어 갔음을 깨닫고 그 할례 받지 아니한 그들의 마음이 낮아져서 그들의 죄악의 형벌을 기쁘게 받으면 42내가 야곱과 맺은 내 언약과 이삭과 맺은 내 언약을 기억하며 아브라함과 맺은 내 언약을 기억하고 그 땅을 기억하리라

 약속의 근원 

 43그들이 내 법도를 싫어하며 내 규례를 멸시하였으므로 그 땅을 떠나서 사람이 없을 때에 그 땅은 황폐하여 안식을 누릴 것이요 그들은 자기 죄악의 형벌을 기쁘게 받으리라 44그런즉 그들이 그들의 원수들의 땅에 있을 때에 내가 그들을 내버리지 아니하며 미워하지 아니하며 아주 멸하지 아니하고 그들과 맺은 내 언약을 폐하지 아니하리니 나는 여호와 그들의 하나님이 됨이니라 45내가 그들의 하나님이 되기 위하여 민족들이 보는 앞에서 애굽 땅으로부터 그들을 인도하여 낸 그들의 조상과의 언약을 그들을 위하여 기억하리라 나는 여호와이니라

 끝맺는 말 

46이것은 여호와께서 시내 산에서 자기와 이스라엘 자손 사이에 모세를 통하여 세우신 규례와 법도와 율법이니라

[ Leviticus 26:40 - 26:46 ]

40“But if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers in their treachery that they committed against me, and also in walking contrary to me,41 so that I walked contrary to them and brought them into the land of their enemies—if then their uncircumcised heart is humbled and they make amends for their iniquity,42 then I will remember my covenant with Jacob, and I will remember my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.43 But the land shall be abandoned by them and enjoy its Sabbaths while it lies desolate without them, and they shall make amends for their iniquity, because they spurned my rules and their soul abhorred my statutes.44 Yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not spurn them, neither will I abhor them so as to destroy them utterly and break my covenant with them, for I am the LORD their God.45 But I will for their sake remember the covenant with their forefathers, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God: I am the LORD.”46 These are the statutes and rules and laws that the LORD made between himself and the people of Israel through Moses on Mount Sinai. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

God earnestly desired for the Israelites to humbly confess their sins and accept their punishment. Although the Israelites would be exiled and live in the land of their enemies as slaves, God had not abandoned them. If the Israelites turned back, the time of punishment would not be a time of judgement but a time of restoration. God would not forget his covenant and would not hold back his love from the Israelites. Just as he delivered them from Egypt in the ‘sight of the nations’, God would once again deliver them and fulfil his covenant (vv. 40-46). 

Who is God?

Vv. 40-45 God restores those who repent. Although he makes the people pay the price for their sins, he does not hate or abandon them but punishes them so that they will return while he waits patiently. Let’s meditate on the compassion of God, who never forgets us even amid his wrath. 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 40- 41 God’s people needed to confess and repent not just their own sins but the sins of the community. Let’s confess and acknowledge the community’s sins of abandoning God and pursuing power and riches. Then let’s humbly pay the price for those sins with hope in the day of restoration. 

Prayer

Lord, help me to become a person of faith who reflects on oneself through the Word and turns back from the path of sin.
